i love pretty much the whole first side. second side is spottier, but obv. there's "stay free." and "all the young punks." and "guns on the roof." ok, the second side's good too.

"Cheapskates". Tho "Safe European Home" is objectively better.

love this, totally prefigures the new orleans rhythms they got further into on london calling.

"Safe European Homes" over "Stay Free." Safe choices, sure. The production gets on my nerves: it's relentless in an obnoxious way.

My second favorite Clash album, after the debut. Going with "Safe European Home," but on a different day I might vote for almost any other track on the record.

"Tommy Gun" because it is the only song my brother-in-law has ever performed at karaoke, and he was magnificent.

i think the production works on the first 3 tracks, it really muscles them up -- "safe european home" especially sounds huge, in a good way. but it's gloppy in a lot of other places, for sure.

Tommy Gun

xxpost: also, the remaster job from the late 1990's is the way to go over the original cd issue. instruments have some separation and it breathes more

Stay Free. Predictable maybe, but it still gets me, you know, right there, after all these years

cheapskates!

dig this album by the way even though it's a little bit of a bumpy ride.

Although I prefer The Clash (in whatever edition), the first half, especially "Safe European Homes" and "Guns On the Roof" feel and sound more apocalyptic than a lot of punk. Here's where the obnoxious production helps.

Whenever I think I hate the Clash, I listen to 'Stay Free' and realize that I am wrong.

Fruitless and Pansy Free (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

It's my least favorite Clash and still so great, much funnier and subtler than I realized as a kid. The bartender played it in its entirety between sets at my band's final show, at the late 24 Bar in Minneapolis, and the slickness really works in a club.

i'm glad drug-stabbing time got a vote, even though it wasn't from me.
