I've Been POLLing in the Wind - Badly Drawn Boy's Hour of the Bewilderbeast

Let us go back, back to a time of Mercury Music Prizes and optimism for the future. It's probably self-indulgent, too-long, and unweildy, but I still really like this album.

I like it too. Torn between about 6 of these.

Mo Tucker Mo Problems (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 18 September 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

I voted The Shining and then realised that I'd forgotten Magic in the Air which clearly should have been it.

His downward trajectory after this album was quite something.

I'll totally rep for a lot of About a Boy, and even for some of Fed The Fish. But yeah, spectacular fall all in all.

Although I haven't listened to this in years, I used to really love "Once Around the Block"

Flergblergtennis (aog208), Saturday, 18 September 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

Such a great album, but nearly impossible to choose just one. Magic In The Air and Epitaph are both lovely ballads, but I'll have to go with Disillusion....first song I ever heard by BDB and has some great lyrics (" I didn't mean to fall in love") and a very memorable video to go with it.

Slightly out of sync, but still awesome.

Totally forgot about the haunting Egyptian/Indian sounding coda at 3:32.....this track should easily win.

Tim. E "LazRus" Lucas (Prose b4 Hoes...and Big Hoos), Sunday, 19 September 2010 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

where is "fall in a river"?

hobbes, Sunday, 19 September 2010 06:25 (fifteen years ago)

ah shit

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Sunday, 19 September 2010 06:40 (fifteen years ago)

Funny, I don't know why but I had the thought of staring this poll acouple days ago.

Mark G, Sunday, 19 September 2010 08:57 (fifteen years ago)

There's also the 'early tracks' CD that came with the aussie edition, theat's also excellent.

Mark G, Sunday, 19 September 2010 08:58 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't heard this in years upon years, i don't think i listened to a note after hearing that "fish" album once. which is a shame because this really is a good record (as were the two EPs that preceded it)

might have to have a listen now

the groin transfer (electricsound), Sunday, 19 September 2010 09:56 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Still one of a select list of albums that get regularly pulled out and replayed, for me.

Mark G, Thursday, 23 September 2010 08:51 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't played this in years because of his post-About a Boy decline but I still love The Shining, Once Around the Block, Pissing in the Wind and Magic Is in the Air. Torn.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Thursday, 23 September 2010 09:11 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 23 September 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Pleasing results, but surprised no one voted for 'Epitaph', which is lo-fi balladry done extremely well.

Tim. E "LazRus" Lucas (Prose b4 Hoes...and Big Hoos), Thursday, 23 September 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I presume getting tucked away at the end of the album didn't help it.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Thursday, 23 September 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

It's a perfect ending, and has been for his gigs as well.

Mark G, Friday, 24 September 2010 06:43 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

His downward trajectory after this album was quite something.

The nadir just got worse:

"Seriously, do you think I want to be here? Why tour America when nobody's buying the record? I should just open a shop somewhere."

Or make a better record amirite.

Sounds like he spent 12 minutes using an Apple TV and reacted appropriately tbh.

new album pretty good actually

Gukbe, Saturday, 18 December 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

most disturbing thing about all this is that he's performing Like A Virgin

idgi fridays (blueski), Monday, 20 December 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

One verse into The Shining, Gough snapped, throwing his harmonica to the floor and yelling, "You cunts can shut the fuck up!".

thirteen years pass...

“fall in a river, then “epitaph”

brimstead, Friday, 29 March 2024 19:23 (two years ago)

album will forever be tied to my early college years in the 00s and discovering PTA’s films.

“Cause a Rockslide” would’ve gotten my vote. The jittery arrangement sounds like something made by insects at a riverbank.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 30 March 2024 08:27 (two years ago)

Dug this out two days ago (well, via Spotify, but we were in Krakow, so...)

Mark G, Saturday, 30 March 2024 14:43 (two years ago)

He seems happier thesedays. Constant touring and so forth was sending him on a downward spiral, clearly.

Mark G, Saturday, 30 March 2024 14:46 (two years ago)

I once drunkenly told him from quite a distance away how good I thought Once Around The Block was, he good naturedly said “Ah cheers.” I saw his first ever gig on a New Year’s Eve just as the first e.p. was coming out I think. People were talking and he threatened to walk off so he started as he meant to go on really.

piscesx, Saturday, 30 March 2024 15:51 (two years ago)

“Cause a rockslide” is amazing, yeah, and way better and less annoying than anything animal collective did
