I guess including Jackson Frank isn't fair (he wrote it I guess). But heyho.

I think this was an ill-advised poll. My poll adviser has been sacked.

brownie, Saturday, 18 September 2010 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

yeah putting the jackson version doesnt help this poll much. it is the best version by a country mile.

tzarahel (buzza), Saturday, 18 September 2010 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

damn I knew it. anyway, enjoy the other versions if you can. I'm a S&G freak.

I should've done a Jackson Frank poll.

brownie, Saturday, 18 September 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

we can talk about Jackson here if anyone cares

my favorite:

I think I've had Jackson C.'s original for three or four years now. If I get around to making yet another list of my 100 favorite songs at some point, it will be way, way up there.

Maybe tomorrow, honey, someplace down the line
I'll wake up older
So much older, mama
I'll wake up older
And I'll just stop all my tryin'

I think those might be the most devastatingly depressing lines to ever turn up in a (broadly speaking) pop song. Joy Division, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, nothing can match them. (Those last two probably aren't good parallels...whatever; I'm not an expert on depressing music.) The only other version I own from the list above is John Renbourn's, on some budget folk compilation. It's great too.

I'd never heard the S&G version before. Nice enough, but I'm getting a giggle out of their tautological paraphrase of the lyrics:

Maybe when I'm older, baby, someplace down the line
I'll wake up older
So much older, mama...

So very, very true.

bert jansch is a terribly spotty performer (see the video itt), but i saw him play this beautifully once, and am voting jansch.

Sometime I wonder what the banaka thinks about this.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Best Version: Jackson C. Frank - It's a given but it's still the most powerful and sincere rendition of the song.
Worst Version: Simon & Garfunkel - WTF were they thinking? They completely ruin the dark mood of the original with their sunshine hoppity folk crap.

Moka, Sunday, 26 September 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
