picked up the stefan goldmann release (haven't i seen you before) on a whim & really liked it. however the eclecticism & general weirdness of their releases so far makes it hard to just order shit w/no prior knowledge... so: anything in particular that's essential? i'm really interested in the zachary james watkins and leslie winer releases but a bunch of them look really good imo

I bought the Pita and Fennesz ones but seeing as I don't have a tape player I can't really comment.
― margana (anagram), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 07:51 (fifteen years ago)
haha those are the two im probably least interested in aside from the spoken word releases.
(one) of the things that i think is really admirable about their releases is that they are trying to use the cassette format in interesting ways. the goldmann release has slight variations of each piece on sides A and B so that it looks like:
A1: The Eyes of Jesus Christ (Left Eye)A2: 2005A3: SpouseA4: Wastelands (Version A)A5: Enclosures (Part 1)B1: Enclosures (Part 2)B2: Wastelands (Version B)B3: LoverB4: 7513B5: The Eyes of Jesus Christ (Right Eye)
and played with on a machine with an automatic reverse function the tape will seem to loop in on itself echoing the many loops that provide most of the structure to each of the compositions. its really thoughtful, i think, and the entire tape was this both woozy and rigorous structure. idk i really like it.

that sounds really cool
i've got the fennesz one, which is pretty much how it's described, samples from his old ensoniq samplers sewn into a kinda grungy tapestry. it serves as a curio for fans i suppose, at times you can hear sped up samples of stuff from hotel paral.lel and endless summer, but i enjoy it as a kinda testament to those specific samplers he used. the ensoniq samplers are notoriously fucked up and weird samplers basically, with these strange digital quirks and what not. it's cool in a kinda stratrekman way if you catch my gist
anyway the best thing about the fennesz tape is the sample of dolphin brothers "catch the fall"
i think i'm gonna get the derek jarman one, and the stefan goldmann one now you've described (btw you realise he makes shit like this in his spare time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DQ2WA1AX0U)

when i read the description of the leslie winer release i thought of you, actually! apparently she was a supermodel turned downtown weirdo in the 90s and this is a collection of tracks recorded around the same time as her one album. its supposed to be "proto-trip hop" (also gets recc'd as "pdubstep foreshadowing"!?) & fits somewhat into some of the minimal synth/darkwave stuff...
― swagula (Lamp), Friday, 24 September 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)
oh lol double post hmmmm
side B of daniel menche's 'raw falls' cassette is so dense and lovely and abstract. its probably terrible to call it 'hypnotic' but theres a uniformity to its chaos that really is... um, 'hypnotic'. the textures and the range are really superb too.

Lamp, u wanna get mods to make this rolling Tapeworm/NNA/Root Strata?
― cream of some young dude (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)
Well speaking as a mod... Is there a general tape-label thread already? Or is there a particular association between those three that I've missed?
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)
i feel like all the cassette/tape label threads mostly consist of 'tapes? really? really?' posts
did you get the burning tree tape whiney? supposed to have some insane drumming on it
― am/sand (Lamp), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)
I did!
― cream of some young dude (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)
I went on a tape binge last night
I got the Burning Tree and the Francisco Lopez from Tapeworm; the Driphouse from Root Strata; the Golden Retriever from NNA; and the Jana Winderen tape of clicking shrimps
Bout to put out my first tape too!
― cream of some young dude (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)
haha i thought about buying that golden retriever tape cuz i heard good things abt the lp they did for root strata
'noisiest guys on the planet' is really good imo if not up to the standards of the cd she released last year on touch
i ordered four tapes from nna last week including the driphouse one and: synaptic foliage, mike shiftlet and dylan ettinger
― am/sand (Lamp), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, a lot off the NNA stuff is like total Altered Zone chillax nostalgiator jams that I can't fuck with, but the serious improv/noise end of it is phenomenal. NNA alumni Hubble and Nonhorse are both on the Hipster Puppies tape, Lamp. Send me an address and I'll mail you a copy.
― cream of some young dude (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)
