If you have 'autumn' in your song, band or album name I expect some goddamn attractive audio melancholy or else

This is not being stated out of anger, merely out of appreciation. My point stands of course.

Scrounge your collection and name some favorites. (I'm mentioning the Autumns, Autumn Shade, Autumn's Grey Solace and Autumnfair just to get them out of the way -- but they are all good in their own 'we're moody as hell and we love it' ways.) "Autumnal" seems to be a good song title for acts to bring it -- Aarktica, Arab Strap and Arcana all do well.

we don't have autumn in new york anymore--summer goes right into freezing cold 9 months

i'd mention yo la tengo's autumn sweater, but i rather dislike it intensely.

how about opeth's demon of the fall? does that count? the word "autumn" even appears in the lyrics.

Oh dear, the first "Autumn" song that popped into my head is downright perky. I rather like it, too.

My favourite track from their album Fourteen Autumns And Fifteen Winters. That title is a pretty decent indicator of the music....bleak, atmospheric scottish rock.

Almost forgot. The track is called 'Walking For Two Hours'.

The piano piece a couple of tracks before this on the album is probably more melancholy, but this still has a gorgeous end of summer vibe.

Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You seems like it should get in on a technicality, despite being arguably more "miserable" than "melancholy".

actually, on second thought, it feels more like an album for people who forget to pay attention to autumn, then suddenly find themselves in the depths of winter wondering confusedly where the summer went. kinda like iago g described upthread. I'll shut up and slink quietly out of the thread now.
