Gotta do something while we wait for Thug Motivation 103, eh (now that it's been pushed to fuckign 2011). Which of these three fine albums will it be? No mixtapes -- someone else can start that poll if they're oh so offended.

just pretend you see pictures there where there are red Xs....

inspiration is actually my fave even tho everyone says it's his worst

synth pattern boldness (The Brainwasher), Friday, 24 September 2010 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

it got the most critical love of the three, although it's (at the moment) my least favorite. having trouble deciding between debut and Recession. I like em all though, even if dude drops a cringe-inducing line more often than a lot of other rappers I like.

voted inspiration but this was a tough choice.

Pitchfork gave it the highest score of the three, Rolling Stone gave it the highest mark of the three, as did L.A. Times, etc. It's hard to make a definitive statement like that I know given the almost unlimited number of critics, but that's been the feeling I've seen.

Remedial Thug Motivation (San Te), Friday, 24 September 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

maybe at the time ppl overcompensated a bit, but it definitely feels like the most minor full length of his career, incl a few mixtapes even

& the singles off that album feel even more minor in comparison -- "i luv it" & "go getta" are just kinda whatever, and that one w/ keyshia cole... -- anyway, the real keepers off 'the inspiration' are "3 AM" (straight classic) & "hypnotize"

first album has the crazy singles album -- third album is just the best tho

I'm still undecided, listening to both to try and make a determination. I will say The Inspiration is my least favorite too, although I like the production for sure. supposedly he said he considered the album "motivational speaking", not as a metaphor, but like some Tony Robbins shit. ooooooooo-k man....

Remedial Thug Motivation (San Te), Friday, 24 September 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

really gotta say vocally, his raspy voice sounds the best on Recession.

I would agree that the singles don't stand out as much on this, but this album rides all the way through imo

I do like that they used a clever interpolation of Hall and Oates on thea lbum

Remedial Thug Motivation (San Te), Friday, 24 September 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

it's really unfair for me to call Recession the "Political" album, that's the tag the media gave it, but I think he branched out a lot on many topics and the production betters even Thug Motivation 101.

lyrically too I think Jeezy's more interesting on this one. especially "Don't Do It"

Remedial Thug Motivation (San Te), Friday, 24 September 2010 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i totally forgot about mr. 17.5 -- even made a don cannon + jeezy poll

high efficiency unit (J0rdan S.), Friday, 24 September 2010 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

i need to go back to the inspiration. don't think i've listened to it since like.. a couple months after it came out

The Reverend, Friday, 24 September 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

recesh easy - others might have their little merits but that thing is a force of nature

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Saturday, 25 September 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

Recession now wins my vote after a relisten to both. It actually achieves some of the goals he purported to be after on Inspiration (ie, "motivational" feeling). It's not so much that he changed any of teh formula but that he improved it. The production is more epic/anthemic, the hooks on his songs at times feel like pop songs (ie, pre-choruses and such) which really adds to the songs, and his lyrics are better.

I just feel like every song gets the juices flowing, like "Gonna Fly Now" Rocky.

Remedial Thug Motivation (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

it's kind of funny how ostensibly similar these albums are and yet how huge the quality gap is between The Recession and The Inspiration -- i feel like people were ready for his 2nd album to be great but he was going through that phase where he wasn't even putting any effort into making words rhyme and the songs just weren't there

Recession got 9 votes in ILM Top 100 2005-2009: ALBUMS which should have in and of itself rendered this thread unnecessary
