Captain Beefheart - Clear Spot POLL

Message Bookmarked

Perhaps the most accesible Beefheart album, at least it's the only one I can play straight to my friends without complaints. It's my personal favorite and maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I think it is Zoot Horn Rollo's finest hour.
No thread, poll or enough heaps of love thrown its way so here it is, the clear spot poll & thread. What you say, ILM?

nonightsweats, Sunday, 26 September 2010 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles are why I bought the album.

Low Yo Yo Stuff - the opening 10 seconds made me sit up and take notice the first time I heard it. Big Eyed Beans tries to hard for me to like it.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 26 September 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

easily my fave of his LPs (and I love the others). voted "My Head Is..."

MR. ZOOT HORN ROLLO - HIT THAT LONGGGG LUNAR NOTE - AND LET IT FLOAT

dmr, Monday, 27 September 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

I think I'd rank Big Eyed Beans slightly above Lo Yo Yo Stuff but I also have a soft spot for Too Much Time. great album.

dmr, Monday, 27 September 2010 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

'Nowadays' has been in the rotation lately but voting 'Circumstances' as that is the one that would really move my feet if I saw a/the band do it live. I am a big fan of this album.

it is kind of a record without fault though

having taken an actual journalism class (contenderizer), Monday, 27 September 2010 09:02 (fifteen years ago)

my second favourite beefheart. went for the title track, although "her eyes..." is beautiful.

village idiot (dog latin), Monday, 27 September 2010 09:03 (fifteen years ago)

I *thought* I really loved this album, but if you asked me to hum some of these songs e.g. Circumstances, I would be totally stumped. So I need to listen to it again I think.

This album is almost perfect. "Beans" is perfect.

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 11:30 (fifteen years ago)

so much good stuff. Long Neck Bottles may be kinda dumb, but has a great drive, I'll go with that just over Beans

pauls00, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 11:35 (fifteen years ago)

my favorite beefheart

picked the title track

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

Just getting into this album, should have an answer by the closing date.

A Safe as Milk poll would be impossible.

groovy little party this album is. I picked "Long Neck Bottles"

nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 30 September 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

whoa @ the trout mask replica house being for sale!
not sure what to vote for here -- it is kind of a perfect record.

tylerw, Thursday, 30 September 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

this album is a fucking 10.0/10.0 classic in my book. i get chills listenign to this

every song if i could choose

but especially "Yo Yo", "Too Much Time" and "Venus"

"Circumstances" for that incredible train noise breakdown thing

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Thursday, 30 September 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

the mix of genuine romantic sentimentality, lust, misogyny and wanting to fuck his guitar is just...everything

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Thursday, 30 September 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

"can't find my kind of folks havin fun....i have to RRUUUUUUUN RUUUUUUUUUUUN RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUnnnnnnn"

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Thursday, 30 September 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

Didja know that Joan Osborne borrowed the music from that one for "My Right Hand"?? Don probably earned more royaltie$ for that one than any record of his own, ever...

Love this record, my favourite "commercial" Beefheart album. I like how he telegraphs every one of Rollo's solos and interacts with the Blackberries - it's like he's saying "I'm not really a freak, I'm a showman putting on a show, please buy my record!" He may not be weird, but he sure is hungry. A first-rate sellout, even if it still didn't really sell.

Voting for "Sun Zoom Spark". That cowbell!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 30 September 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah weirdly gary lucas played on that joan osborne record.

tylerw, Thursday, 30 September 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

I know this is the wrong thread, but I have to say I was amazed that no-one referenced the 'version' of "Ah feel like ahcid" that was a big hit a few years ago, to Captain Beefheart.

Mark G, Friday, 1 October 2010 10:00 (fifteen years ago)

I don't remember that

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 1 October 2010 10:02 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, what was it called anybody?....

Mark G, Friday, 1 October 2010 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

.. I think it's this one..

35 Mint Royale Blue Song Feb 2003

Mark G, Friday, 1 October 2010 11:13 (fifteen years ago)

Joan Osborne has covered "Blue Million Miles" off that record too. She's clearly a fan.

There's this passage in Zoot's book where he pretty much says that all the TMR anguish was washed away when he heard Don say "MISTER Zoot Horn Rollo: hit that long lunar note and let it float."

ellaguru, Friday, 1 October 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

I think it might be My Head Is My Only...

rhythm fixated member (chap), Friday, 1 October 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

The title track is also bitching.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Friday, 1 October 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, was tempted by just those two (before succumbing to beans)

having taken an actual journalism class (contenderizer), Friday, 1 October 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

listened to this yesterday, voted for the title track

tylerw, Friday, 1 October 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Saturday, 9 October 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Forgot to vote, think I would've bumped up My Head... I like how starts with a straightforward kind of souly riff, then turns all harmonically weird and complex, then back again.

I really fucking love this record. Maligned unfairly imho, really great stuff.

Puff Daddy, whoever the fuck you are. I am dissapoint. (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 1 September 2011 04:06 (fourteen years ago)

I mean even this:

Crazy Little Thing - 0

is kinda O_O

Puff Daddy, whoever the fuck you are. I am dissapoint. (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 1 September 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

Maligned? Nooh. Never seen it maligned.

Mark G, Thursday, 1 September 2011 08:20 (fourteen years ago)

Same here, never happened that I'm aware of, 'twould be madness to malign this album

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 September 2011 08:42 (fourteen years ago)

I think it's the one I'd wanna listen to if I were given a choice. Definitely the grooviest.

Sonny Chevrotain (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2011 08:53 (fourteen years ago)

at this point i feel like the captain doesn't actually have any bad albums -- a couple are less inspired, but i still love all of them.

tylerw, Thursday, 1 September 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

Been really digging Spotlight Kid lately. But yeah, they all have their charms imo.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 1 September 2011 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

the one i'm actually most disappointed in is bongo fury, because of the potential for greatness that it doesn't quite reach. i should see if there are bootlegs of that tour.

tylerw, Thursday, 1 September 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

I think that Robyn Hitchcock recently did this album complete for one of his "with Heavy Friends" London shows. You can hear its influence on the Soft Boys, especially A Can Of Bees.

ONCE YOU FIND OUUU-WOWWWT

THE CIRCUMSTANCES

THEN YOU CAN GO OWWWWT AN'

WHOA YEAH

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 1 September 2011 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

yeah would love to hear that hitchcock show!

tylerw, Thursday, 1 September 2011 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

For sure:

To celebrate Captain Beefheart and his life on Earth, Robyn Hitchcock and the Imaginary Band will perform the album `Clear Spot' and a few other Beefheart compositions at the Garage, London, June 3th and Wychwood Festival, Cheltenham, June 4th. "In the early Soft Boys we tried to cross Abbey Road with Trout Mask Replica", says Robyn: "It didn't always work but it was some hybrid. The most exciting show I've ever seen was Beefheart and The Magic Band in 1973. This won't be as accurate as the John French/Magic Band gigs a few years back, but Clear Spot is quite a party album, and we're planning to have quite a party". The Imaginary Band will be Paul Noble and Terry Edwards on guitars and bass, Jenny Adejayan on cello, and Stephen Irvine on drums.

ya know i thought i'd heard this one in full before, but i'm listening now and i don't think i have. a woman shoulda hit this man as punishment for my ignorance.

ptah el dude (voodoo chili), Friday, 4 September 2020 18:28 (five years ago)

needless to say, this thing is a powerhouse.

ptah el dude (voodoo chili), Friday, 4 September 2020 18:29 (five years ago)

I regard "Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles" as the perfect response to The Guess Who's awful eyes song.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 September 2020 18:30 (five years ago)

'my head is my only house' is severely underrepresented here, i think it's the best beefheart ballad by a country mile

ptah el dude (voodoo chili), Friday, 4 September 2020 18:33 (five years ago)

don coming through with the proto-rappin on "low yo yo stuff." just jokin, kinda.

the two-fer cd of this and spotlight kid is one of the most classic 'idk what to play so i'll just play this again' picks of my record store clerk days.

others in this category include:

and fiona apple when the pawn if my coworkers were being dicks. i loved hearing it in the big store stereo but they were all too macho for fiona.
