Best nu metal band (2010 ed.)

Yes, we've polled this before. You can find it in the ILM archives if you search a bit. Still, I'd rather people not focus on those results and vote again here, given the "nu" developments in the genre's resurgence in the last ~15 months or so.

either Deftones or SOAD are gonna win this

markers, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 06:48 (fifteen years ago)

Incubus weren't really nu-metal in their early incarnation. they were heavy-FNM leaning funk-rock

u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 07:39 (fifteen years ago)

System of a Down, it's just no contest. Their s/t album is one of my favorites of all time -- Serj's creative and bizarre vocal patterns really elevate that album. Toxicity is not quite as good but still enjoyable, but Mesmerize was excellent (didn't hear Hypnotize).

u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 07:41 (fifteen years ago)

about 75% of the bands in this list were fucking terrible

u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 07:41 (fifteen years ago)

probably the only poll imaginable where i'm gonna vote deftones.

charlie h, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 07:54 (fifteen years ago)

The answer is of course Deftones but I've never really considered them nu-metal (ditto SOAD).

System of a Down, it's just no contest.

San Te, have you heard Steal This Album? Billed as a collection of offcuts, but it's as good as any of their albums proper, in fact I enjoy it more than a few of them. It's most similar to the debut.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

Abstaining, but would've voted for Apex Theory, Static X, Mad Capsule Markets, or Cyclefly if they were up there, easy.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

System Of A Down easily, Deftones very close second

fuck noOoOO (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

chap, I have not, other than Inner Vision, which I liked. I'll have to check it out since you've compared it to the s/t.

The complete, unabridged list of nu-metal that I fucks with, in case anyone cares:

Korn - Korn
Deftones - "My Own Summer (Shove It)"
Deftones - "Teething"
Mudvayne - "Dig"
Deftones - White Pony
Slipknot - Iowa
System Of A Down - Toxicity
P.O.D. - "Alive"
System Of A Down - Hypnotize
Deftones - "Rocket Skates" 7"
Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns

The first Korn isn't bad at all.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

Every time I hear a Disturbed song on the radio, it brings me a lot of pleasure, so I voted for them. I have the first two System of a Down albums but I haven't even tried to listen to them since the years I lived with my parents.

OOOO-WAH-AH-AH-AH

Mormons come out of the sky and they stand there (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

system of a down. the korn s/t also got a lot of plays. i'm totally fine with never having heard of most of these bands though.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

I also enjoy Disturbed singer David Draiman's educational history, he is probably the only nu metal dude w/three semi-useless Bachelors degrees:

After attending Yeshiva High School at the Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study in Milwaukee, Draiman went to South Shore High School in Brooklyn, the Fasman Yeshiva High School, Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago, Valley Torah High School in North Hollywood, California, and finally, the New England Academy of Torah (NEAT), in Providence, Rhode Island, after which he spent the 1991-1992 academic year at the Neveh Zion Yeshiva in Telz-Stone, Jerusalem. Draiman then triple majored in Business Administration, Philosophy and Political Science at Loyola University. After his schooling he went on to become a medical assistant.

OTOH Serj Tankain collects Persian rugs so maybe this one is a draw.

Serj also named a song Beethoven's Cunt, so there's that too.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:18 (fifteen years ago)

Other than that piece of splendidness his solo album's not very good though.

What happened in the last 15 months?

Drastic times require what? Drastic measures! Who said that? T (President Keyes), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

Was there a new Decline and Fall of Western Civilization about this stuff or something?

i can't believe all the stumping for Disturbed on ILX. That band is loathsome

fuck noOoOO (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

like most of the bands on this poll

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

apart from deftones/soad who are actually good and likeable

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

so probably not very nu-metal.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

where are PUDDLE OF MUDD and STAIND

jk the answer is soad

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

Staind = M.O.R.
Puddle of Mudd = Nu-Grunge

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

they're both diarrhea

u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

though in retrospect i think limp bizkit had some pretty good singles. i have a soft spot for more nu-metal singles than i would like to admit.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

ok sry i'm not well-versed in modern rock subgenres. is godsmack nu metal? i am learning here.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

whatever they were, I'd gladly never hear Sully Erna's deriviative braying ever again.

u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

i never knew incubus could ever be described as nu-metal

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

How is this even an argument? DEFTONES
How many nu metal bands can you think of that convince their fans into believing that they are in fact "beyond nu-metal" (transcendent nu-metal?) who also pull of killer, convincing covers of Sade and Cocteau Twins? They hung out with Madonna and Jonah Matranga. THEY ARE THE BEST, PERIOD.

Thought this was every nu-metal band?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

i never knew incubus could ever be described as nu-metal

They were on the Family Values tour back in '97, guilt by association.

What terrible, terrible band names. Snot, Skrape, Flaw, Mudvayne. Even bands I like - System of a Down and Deftones. Terrible.

fair results, but this cannot go unaddressed:

Limp Bizkit 5

GTFO

you have to be kidding me that they got a vote.

it takes a nation of will.i.ams to hold us back (San Te), Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

probably by someone who didn't know any of the bands and thought that was the most interesting looking name.

Another band that operated within nu metal and made some interesting moves: Dir en grey.
