Chic, by a million.

sonofstan, Monday, 4 October 2010 08:39 (fifteen years ago)

ha ha ha DAMN! I reviewed a terrible Alice Cooper album for Spin in 1989 and wrote that Alice would never get in the Hall of Fame.

modest marky (m coleman), Monday, 4 October 2010 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'd be okay with none of these artists being inducted...not because I think they're bullshit, I like more than a few of them...but, eh, meh.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 October 2010 09:47 (fifteen years ago)

Why should artists who never made a rock and roll record be included in the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame"?

Tuomas, Monday, 4 October 2010 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

Because trolling nitwits is the only way this could possibly have any value?

I ain't that kind of player I just foul a lot (DJ Mencap), Monday, 4 October 2010 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

I remain an agnostic on Alice Cooper, but I won't get into that again. Who I'd put in from this group: Beastie Boys, Chic, Donovan, L.L. Cool J, Donna Summer. The really subjective choice is Donovan, hugely influenced by how his music has been used in a whole bunch of great movies the past 20 years. I agree with the comment above--widening "rock and roll" to mean something a little closer to "pop"--so the name on the list I have the most problems with is Tom Waits. Ditto some people already in there, like Leonard Cohen and James Taylor. I'm not commenting on the quality of their music--both Cohen and Taylor have songs that are among my all-time favourites. I just don't see them as having much to do with rock and roll...unless the term is applied to their primary audience, in which case okay.

clemenza, Monday, 4 October 2010 11:54 (fifteen years ago)

It's all about the audience.

Mark G, Monday, 4 October 2010 12:27 (fifteen years ago)

We're voting on whether they deserve inclusion on the bullshit merits of the R&R Hall of Fame, right? Then of course Alice Cooper deserves inclusion. So do Chic, Donna Summer, LL, and Laura Nyro.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 October 2010 13:44 (fifteen years ago)

Diamond too.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 October 2010 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

Will the R&R HOF ever nominate Sonic Youth, or is that too much to ask for in a world where the J. Geils Band gets nominated thrice?

jaymc, Monday, 4 October 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

gonna have to go w/ Beasties on this one

some o))) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 4 October 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

Chic Cheer!

iago g., Sunday, 10 October 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

I really, really really want Chic and Donna Summer to win. Donna Summer's The Wanderer was a great rock/pop record. It was #2 on the critics list in Rolling Stones in 1980 or 1981. There was a great write up about it on popmatters.com: http://www.popmatters.com/pm/feature/a-long-way-from-wonderland/

Chic made great dance records and that should be evidence enough they belong in that old fogie rock club. I never understand these rock purist who slam other Western music genres when it comes to HoF nominations. Rock music was dance music when it started, and I believe Chic and Donna Summer carried that "let's all have a good time and dance the night away" feeling rock music use to have when it started. If so called rock fans can't feel that then they have two left feet.

lilsoulbrother, Sunday, 10 October 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

Alas, the lack of Edwards and Thompson means some horrible faux version of Chic will inevitably perform.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 October 2010 13:23 (fifteen years ago)

Why are Chic's "rock" credentials being questioned but not Neil Diamond's (or, for that matter, Tom Waits')?

Sterling-Kinney (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 10 October 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

The Wanderer still doesn't get enough love.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 October 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

Love Chic the most, Nyro and Donovan and Darlene Love (!) are all seriously overdue...voted Nyro cuz according to my calculations she was the one most likely to get a goose-egg in this poll...

All Evil Begins as Flight from Pain (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 10 October 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

Not clear if this is a prediction poll, or a who-would-you-put-in? poll. Really, Laura Nyro? "Wedding Bell Blues" is one of the greatest pop songs ever, she wrote some other good ones too, and I like the Gonna Take a Miracle LP. A songwriters Hall of Fame, sure. But I can't see her in a performers Hall of Fame--her impact seems almost non-existent in terms of her own records.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 October 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

The version Nile is touting around these days is pretty fine.

System, Sunday, 10 October 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

I like the winner, and I like the last-place choice. Tom Waits is one big "Huh?" for me. When he came along in the '70s, wasn't his whole persona (a nicer way to say schtick) a rejection of rock and roll?

clemenza, Sunday, 10 October 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

Chic would actually deserve it, but I would guess they will not be voted in. The people deciding are very rock centric and it takes typical pop (or, in this case, disco) acts years to get in there.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 11 October 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

Yr probably right.
