what makes for a good "night"?

you know, when a couple of DJ's take over a club on a weekly or monthy basis... do you want it to have a distinct identity (like an electroclash night or a soul night or something) or should it be more open-ended? lots of "hits", or mostly new stuff? divey bar or swank club? how often? should it run forever or just a few times? oh & what's a good name for a night?

Please give me all your ideas so that I might exploit them for my own personal gain, thanks.

seriously, I've done a few of these in the past and they were fun. thinking of getting one going again & would love to hear from ILM's niteklubbers on what they like and dislike.

not too frequently (like once a month is good) and have the occasional really good live band.

I'm saving all my good ideas for my triumphant return to the San Francisco club scene.

1. Some kind of musical focus, but djs can have their own individual style within that. I mean you can have a hiphop dj warm up for house djs who warms up for techno dj or something.

2. venue depends on the music but you either want a club night and all the advantages thereof, space, sound etc, or a divey bar and all the advantages thereof, dancing on tables, atmosphere, cheaper stuff. Obv don't go in between.

Hits or new stuff depends really, you'll never get too dedicated an audience with just hits, but obviously you run a bigger risk initially with new stuff.

Anyway that's my take.

'Blowpop' in Bristol being a good example: monthly, a dive The Croft, £2 to get, music policy = northern soul and onwards and the dj's (John Stapleton being a prime candidate for this) spending most of the night playing air guitar with the crowd during classic funk tunes! and ideal night!

i only want to hear old stuff...:-)

OPTIMO seems to be my ideal club but it´s in another country http://www.optimo.co.uk

thanks everybody... ronan seems otm as usual. I think a dive bar is the way to go, but I'm just feeling lazy about the added hassle of loading gear in and out and wiring it up to sound good. Still... cheap beer and dancing on the tables is worth it all.

as far as musical focus goes, how open can you make it? I want to be able to play a wide variety of stuff, but I want to keep em dancing.

and give it up you guys, what's a good name for a night? does it really matter?

oh, and do you go all-out postering or do you rely on the dubious but cool "word of mouth"?

The bass should be so loud as to be impossible to lean against the walls without getting arthritis.

I can't think of a name, I could regurgitate old ones.

Ronan, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, old ones! so I can rip them off! yeah!

OK, and I kind of asked this seperately on the thread called "yummy yummy chewy chewy" but how about a really specialized theme: like all girl group, all bubblegum, all female-voiced soul '65-'69, or a non- dance oriented night playing all classic c&w? too limited? maybe ithis idea would work for a one-off night rather than an ongoing thing.

There have definitely been regular girl group nights in London.

I'm shooting for tiny venue, loopily eclectic.

Tom, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Loopily eclectic sounds good, though the meaning differs from p to p I'm sure. Just include house in the eclecticism, even if you're trying to be the alternative!

Haha my advice earlier "a hiphop dj followed by house followed by techno". most tainted example of the year surely.

Viva, Crash, Fraggle, Food. Viva is my favourite but mainly cos that's my favourite place at the moment.
