what are the best electronic music labels?

seeing that the entire genre is becoming more and more commercialized and pathetic (well, compared to a decade ago), i wondered if there are anymore labels out there that still press out gritty, technical masterpeices?

this isn't going to be another thread where we get into fights about who bought their basic channel cd in a brown paper sleeve and who bought it in the tin, is it?

(the answer is kompakt, btw.)

...and Warp, of course. Even with some flukey letdowns, they're still pretty solid.

There is a techno label called Chronobrain in France which I don't like that much, but Chronobrain has a number of sub labels, including COMBUSTIBLE (tech-house), ADULT ONLY (house) and TAKA (tribal). Those three labels contain amazing tracks. I never see these labels mentioned by critics and non-DJ fans, and yet every good DJ I have met, including tech-house genius Casey Hogan, love these labels. Taka is especially gritty, while Adult Only is pretty smooth. As for technique, there are a lot of quirky noises and samples. Very unique. I can spot these tracks from a mile away.

Bonzai Records. Over the last ten years consistently very high quality: Yves De Ruyter, Mike Diericx (Push, Moon Project, M.I.K.E), Mass Effect, Jones & Stephenson, Altitude, Planisphere.

kittyyo, darla, 555 recordings, earworm and their friends (see their compilations) do the odd good electronic things. like Fingernail who are my faves.

Some more: Stimulant, Afterglow, Vandit, XL.

Siegbran Hetteson, Sunday, 18 August 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I was gonna say 555 til I realised the electronic stuff does not constitute their best releases by a screaming mile.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 18 August 2002 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The usual suspects: Underground Resistance, Kompakt, Ladomat, International DeeJay Gigolo's, Force Tracks.

Omar, Monday, 19 August 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy's list was great but he forgot Italic, Ware and Poker Flat Recordings.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 19 August 2002 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)
