black metal that manages to be legit creepy while still being totally over the top and ridiculous.
― MMLLLARRRFF (jjjusten), Friday, 8 October 2010 06:54 (fifteen years ago)
Art Bears? Just received a consignment of 'em in the form of emil.y's Dagmar Krause retrospective! Gentle Giant? Link some here. I'm all ears. Ditto Sparks.
SKELETON KEY: Fucking christ this is AWESOME, really manic hard-prance with MELODIES! Needless to say, the drummers funk like a stoat on Viagra. Crap, vocal harmony!! This is beautiful.
WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP sorry BARKMARKET: OK, I've not heard this shit done to a slide-guitar before. Consider me in approval. I take it *extremely heavy slide-guitar* is kinda their thing?
PESTE NOIRE: I have some Peste Noire on my computer which I've never really listened to, maybe this will change things? Ooh I like the drums/guitar intro. Lots of dissonance, tremelo, filth in the mix...good. Four minutes later and I'm still very much absorbed. The guitar-tone for the solo-y bit is lovely. Oh and then it's joined by an even awesomer guitar-tone and loads of horrible bassy grunting - excellent. Whoo!
Now to respond in kind...

Going by that first clip, GG have a really crisp sound - the instrumentation is very clear - and a strong, unconventional sense of melody...I like it! Also they groove (yes, GROOVE, MaresNest) really hard. Really strong sense they're doing what they set out to do. Can't go far wrong with 'em, I suspect, as long as they don't wibble too much elsewhere.

On Reflection begins with an awesome layered vocal bit - not full choral work but getting on that way. OK, now the song proper has begun...(I was really enjoying the choral bit!) yeah it's v v pretty btw and they're not done with the harmonies just yet! The verse melody is lovely. Shame about that 'Acquiring The Taste' album-cover. You guys, seriously. Oooh and now there's a kickass bit at the end with keyboards, drums and everything kicking off inna prog-out style. Nice.
I don't know that corey...but I will do in a second!

Considering the worship I have for Soft Machine's 'Third' I really should have discovered this sooner. NB JJ if you haven't heard Third yet you are in for a treat.

Right, to begin. Lapsus Linguae (RIP...?)
I can't find any studio recordings of theirs on Youtube, so a dodgy-quality live recording will have to do. Fortunately, their ass-kickingness is evident.

Lapsus Linguae - I am unsure about this, but i think a lot of that comes from the kinda muddled vocal burying going on in the mix. It seems at times a bit blurry - but this slow piano break thing in the middle is kinda a welcome surprise hmmmmmm, and the appeal of the post break is working for me.
might have to track down some studio stuff somewhere here before i really make a judgement tho

ok uh i think i just got sold on cardiacs - i think i listened to the first 30 seconds of this song once and didnt give it all the time it needed holy shit i mean it is spazzmo galore but theyre pulling it together really fucking well and oh shit the stutter stop keyboards ok must fetch cardics albums soon. any tips to where to start albumwise cuz i thought they had like thousands or something
― MMLLLARRRFF (jjjusten), Saturday, 9 October 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)
arby's that is VERY early cardiacs when they were all silly and hadn't really worked out their music properly - the song I linked earlier is the first one (IMO) where they completely fucking nailed it
― acoleuthic, Saturday, 9 October 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)
havent listened to the 16-17 yet so i reserve judgement but holy shit seeing painkiller live with napalm death dude blastbeating away while bill laswell used a whammy pdeal to flip between basslines on an SVT and guitar lines on a marshall full stack w/zorn screeching away was fucking headcrushing let me tell you. xpost
― MMLLLARRRFF (jjjusten), Saturday, 9 October 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)
jj that is superb news! they have a mere 5 proper studio albums (3 sorta homemade things beforehand but they're not so great) and every single one of those albums is crushingly good - also the side-project Spratleys Japs album 'Pony' is as good as any. so that's six albums. start with 'on land and in the sea'. this is one of its crowning glories:

xposts WRT the cardiacs, well i'm not up on their catalog enough to really argue with you that so i won't, tho i do gravitate a bit more toward a struggling-to-keep-it-on-the-rails spazzmong kinda vibe a-la my video than what little i've heard of their later stuff, which in passing impression seemed in a too comfortable spot to me?
anyway more schooling needed on my end to personally take stock in anything i'm saying right now so without further ado, your thread sir...

― emil.y, Saturday, 9 October 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)
oh hey its klaatu - prb the best known thing they ever did but also a good entry point imo. pretty prog - album gets pretty weird in spots in a good way, little neutrino and sir boddington wigglesby which sounds like its sung by rolf from the muppets for example
carpenters covered this which i find completely odd

― acoleuthic, Sunday, 10 October 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)
klaatu then - holy shit uppers prog twee synth blissout and that's just the first two minutes, this is gonna be epic isn't it - am surprised it's 1976 though - sounds about 10 years earlier - well, the synths don't - but yeah it's a 60's song with 70's synths and literally more flower power than I thought existed in the world - ok but it's just getting a bit unfocused now, it better have a payoff - hmm, too stop-start, not sure about this really - oh, klaatu - it's kinda cool I guess, will need more convincing
here's another song from 1976 that I just eulogised on another thread and which is completely good
