it was weird to me to look back at trina's billboard numbers -- i think growing up in miami always made me think she was like a huge superstar, which maybe she was on a functional leveln (& maybe her album sales reflect that) but "da baddest bitch" & esp "pull over" & "told y'all" were huge songs when i was a kid so i was kind of shocked to see that they barely had chart numbers

a few years back kitwana tried to source the thing abt rap buyers being white suburbanites and concluded it was a myth.

however this interesting wsj piece found a firm that researched it concluding that 60% of rap is bought by ppl self-identifying as white, with that group accounting for 78% of the population in the US.

Cee-Lo f/ Timbaland - “I’ll Be Around” (2004)

can someone talk to me about this song? I downloaded the mix and it is fun and awesome, but this is one of the songs I hadn't heard before and i don't really get it. I am admittedly not an expert on southern hip hop (I know most of these songs but don't really have a deep knowledge of context/history/etc) so can people please discuss why they like this song or why it's special?

To me it's just a really fun, upbeat song from 2 guys who I totally thought were geniuses (less thrilled with their output since then but they're still obviously talented guys) who'd never worked together before, really finding some comfortable common ground between their respective sounds. It was a pretty minor hit at the time, though, I ranked it a bit higher here than conventional wisdom might dictate.

also, seriously, that Cee-Lo album is one of the best albums of the decade. Hands down better than anything Gnarls Barkley put out. RIYL the new Big Boi

I never totally warmed up to that album.

Def download that album and report back. Was on my Pazz & Jop ballot and still gets lots of play from me. Def like the sweet middle ground between Goodie Mob and the full-on pop of Gnarls
