i feel like al might get some more shit for his picks here cuz there's more of a 'southern rap canon' than an 'alternative rock canon' or, obv, a 'rap/r&b crossover canon' -- interested to see what wins, unless it's "what you know"

Eh, it's 30/20. But only five songs from 2007-09.

I actually would go with Scarface - "My Block" if Al wasn't a dummy and left it off, so I think I might go to proto-witch-haus classic "What You Know"

the thing i love about these lists from al aside from the great analysis & being reminded of amazing songs that slipped my consciousness over the years is that i don't have to even think about what to listen to this weekend. i've been handed a playlist.

whoops wrong southern rap thread

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 October 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

it was weird to me to look back at trina's billboard numbers -- i think growing up in miami always made me think she was like a huge superstar, which maybe she was on a functional leveln (& maybe her album sales reflect that) but "da baddest bitch" & esp "pull over" & "told y'all" were huge songs when i was a kid so i was kind of shocked to see that they barely had chart numbers

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

if it's being played in public, the "fuckin' niggas in the face" line is a guarantee of half the room whipping round to say "wtf did she just say what i think she did" - i used to play it when i edited my university magazine, much to the chagrin of the indie losers on music desk

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

44. Three 6 Mafia f/ UGK and Project Pat - "Sippin' On Some Syrup" (2000)

trollin trollin trollin we aint slept in weeks (deej), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

4. Petey Pablo - "Raise Up" (2001)

bizarrely overrated imo

great canonical top 3 tho

trollin trollin trollin we aint slept in weeks (deej), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

too tired to think of ~omissions~ but off top of head...no pitbull solo singles from his golden period w/lil jon, no crime mob, no "freek-a-leek"...plus a personal southern rap fav that no one else will ever rep for is rasheeda's "georgia peach", such a gorgeous beat

i usually try & take up issues w/ al's picks once the poll is over

the big one i disagreed w/ tho was picking "u don't know me" over "asap"

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that too. there are a few folks around here who get like that about 'bring em out'

trollin trollin trollin we aint slept in weeks (deej), Friday, 8 October 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

but these are points that verge on the border between "quirks of taste" & "wtf is he thinking"

a few years back kitwana tried to source the thing abt rap buyers being white suburbanites and concluded it was a myth.

however this interesting wsj piece found a firm that researched it concluding that 60% of rap is bought by ppl self-identifying as white, with that group accounting for 78% of the population in the US.

Cee-Lo f/ Timbaland - “I’ll Be Around” (2004)

can someone talk to me about this song? I downloaded the mix and it is fun and awesome, but this is one of the songs I hadn't heard before and i don't really get it. I am admittedly not an expert on southern hip hop (I know most of these songs but don't really have a deep knowledge of context/history/etc) so can people please discuss why they like this song or why it's special?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

To me it's just a really fun, upbeat song from 2 guys who I totally thought were geniuses (less thrilled with their output since then but they're still obviously talented guys) who'd never worked together before, really finding some comfortable common ground between their respective sounds. It was a pretty minor hit at the time, though, I ranked it a bit higher here than conventional wisdom might dictate.

some dude, Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

also, seriously, that Cee-Lo album is one of the best albums of the decade. Hands down better than anything Gnarls Barkley put out. RIYL the new Big Boi

cool, thanks for indulging me. I think maybe I just don't like Cee-Lo that much since I wasn't big on "Fuck You" or any of the Gnarls Barkley songs but I should probably give him another shot.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

Def download that album and report back. Was on my Pazz & Jop ballot and still gets lots of play from me. Def like the sweet middle ground between Goodie Mob and the full-on pop of Gnarls
