I haven't bought a single CD since Audiogalaxy went down

I just don't know how to hear all the music I want to hear anymore. It's impossible to find sound samples anywhere, and none of the new P2P services ever have anything I'm looking for. And there's no way I'm buying anything unheard, with my limited funds. Help. :(

reading is fundamental.

What kind of whacked out shit are you looking for that's not available on either WinMX or Soulseek? I haven't bought a single cd since Audiogalaxy went down either, yet I have about 100 new albums to listen to.

the idea that mel is not capable of reading reviews is insulting. obviously that's not what she wants.

Josh, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But people tend to write about things and make them sound like the best thing in the world. And then you hear it and it's quite obviously the worst. I'm not going to buy any CDs that I haven't heard at least one song from. And that's becoming an impossible goal. Obviously, I read about music all the time. But ultimately, no matter how many pretty phrases or damning words someone may write, I really want to judge for myself. BEFORE spending my money. Where I live, it's necessary that I order all my CDs online. And as I have very little extra income, I'd like not to spend my money blindly.

I tried installing Soulseek. Was able to. But the frigging thing ALWAYS freezes/shuts down before an MP3 is downloaded in its entirity. I am not into mere intros of songs. GRRRRR. I did buy some CDs though. BUt due to the hot weather I can't seem to listen to'em properly. On top of that I am in the middle of a genre switch. R'n'B isn't DOING it anymore and I dunno what will... Gotta listen to Wipers but phear I will need to order some Joe Meek (Marcello, I was about to tell ya I was gonna order it! Quelle coincidence!).

Mel -- i'm exactly the same. well not exactly, i have bought some stuff, but WAY LESS than when i had audiogalaxy. other file sharing won't work here in the office. :-(

I hate reading reviews of music -- i HAVE to hear it, and radio is just not directed enough for me. i'm trying to get back into radio listening, but it's not the same. i miss AG so much.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what about filepile? and is there a way that ilxrs could post mp3s somewhere so we could share them, kind of like a small scale thing?

gareth, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about listening to radio on the web, Melissa?

This is a portal of live webcasts around the globe..Town B Underground Music webcasts

I can recommend Xfm - Nick Luscombe - Flo-Motion each Sunday at 10.00pm - 1am UK Time.

It's impossible to find sound samples anywhere

CDNow has tons of sound samples, usually for an entire album.

Vic Funk, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Short of having a public filepile account for ILXers I'm not sure how it could help since AFAIK they're not accepting new members.

Tom, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nath, you got it work? One thing you can do is Quit the program as soon as you add a download, and it'll remember it. Then if it freezes again, when you restart it will reconnect and download the rest.

Graham, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

soulseek is a pain to use at 1st after ag, but stick with it.

haven't bought a cd since ag went either, but have heard so much good stuff. slsk has mere weeks left i'd imagine so let's get cracking kids.

piscesboy, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, thanks for the info. I'll email ya asap. which means... not this week... social life is a bit on an overload mode at the moment

I'm not sure what my deal is, but I've always found buying records based on reviews to be very easy and reliable. You examine the way they describe the music, how they compare it to other records, what kinds of feelings it imparts. Check another source or two, if possible. It works for me -- I like about 90% of stuff I buy based on reviews.

What downloads do for me is keep my from buying the record. I have five songs from that Streets record, which I like pretty well. No way am I going to pay money for it now, even though I'd probably like the whole thing. I almost don't like to download music from something that really interests me, because it will probably stop there.

Melissa, I would think that after read enough reviews or whatever you would have a sense of you could normally rely upon opinionwise for suggested music purchases. And then adding to that what is wrtten, you can make a pretty educated decision. As for being unable to buy music except through mailorder, I am sympathetic towards your position and how difficult that can be. Still, I have to say that participating in forums or other Ghostinternetland communities like the ILM or whatever else are also a great way to discover new stuff, applying the same criteria you would apply to a music critic or reviewer in general to whomoever posts. I've been turned on to a lot of great stuff that way too. Though hearing a song may help, it is in no way necessary to taking a chance on something new.

"I would think that after read enough reviews or whatever you would have a sense of you could normally rely upon "

I first read the NME in 1970, Ive been an avid reader of pop and rock journalism ever since. When can I expect this sense to kick in?

As a pleasant way to pass the time reading rock / pop writings is its own reward. As a way to allocate scare resource (cash) into optimum music reading reviews is mostly a lottery.

All unheard purchases are playing the odds, buying things at random or because I thought the cover was cool has given my much better returns than rock journalism. Of course I've found some gems after reading a review. I would have found them anyway.

Not to be too close minded about it, and to put my money where my mouth is, lets try an experiment, somebody find a review website I can trust. I'll buy the album I like the review of and let you know what I think of it.

I don't think this experiment will work. It leaves out a key part of the equation, which is that you are the one who has to determine which reviewers you can trust. This is to some extent a matter of taste. A reviewer will gain your trust over a period of time. Someone else can point you to their favorite reviewer, but the results will be a lot dicier than if you find one through your own reading & listening experience.

CDNow has tons of sound samples, usually for an entire album.

Not for the albums I want to hear, usually. They're either entirely unavailable at CDNow, or at the very least they won't have sound samples for it.

Melissa W, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Even when CDNow has sound samples, I find they tend to sample a part of the song I don't care about, so I don't get a true sense of the entire thing. :o(

kaysee, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think you should trust reviewers though, I don't even think you should trust the people running around proclaiming you shouldn't trust the reviewers.
