Zeno, Monday, 1 November 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

first track was great, new one even better. so psyched.

sonderangerbot, Monday, 1 November 2010 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

God it's been so long since I've listened to Deerhoof.
Satomi's voice really can be hard to take sometimes.

Trip Maker, Monday, 1 November 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that second track is phenomenal. Probably the best impression I've ever had of a Deerhoof song on first blush.

Der Hof

your favorite homoerotic savior imagery (Hurting 2), Monday, 1 November 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know, that first track is promising but the second one is kind of ew imo. Also enough with these bad-design-is-good-design album covers.

don't hassle deerhhof (Hurting 2), Monday, 1 November 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

the move they made with their sound to electro-pop influence is very good, if only because basically the "old" Deerhoof exhaust itself in terms of sound.

Zeno, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

...by making a bunch of albums that don't really sound that alike?

they always sound a little bit forced awkward to my ears.

wish satomi would. hold. her. notes. alittlemore.

wish they'd leave the ridic arrangements and just keep the good bits. i like rolling flowing deerhoof a lot more than jerky deerhoof. the mash up lots of disparate parts thing doesn't always work for them imo (altho i think it does for the most part on "super duper rescue heads!")

Crackle Box, Tuesday, 2 November 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

but "jerky deerhoof" is most of what they do. when they go primarily "flowing deerhoof," it will be branded their "mature" album.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 2 November 2010 13:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeahhh even within songs they do the flowing thing...

i think i just want them to do an all out psychedelic worship record

i think "running thoughts" (track 2 or 3 off the runners four) is my fave thing they've done, when it gets all big and greg surprises you by coming back in on the 1 at a weird time after that massive build.

saying all this the jerky shit contrasted with the noiser bits is what makes them so awesome live, so eh whatever.. talking out of my ass

I always feel a bit guilty when I see a new Deerhoof release. Every year or so a new one comes out and everyone falls over themselves with excitement, so I get it and never listen to it. The only thing I've really bothered to listen to is Milkman, which was my introduction to the band back in the days when I actually bought physical CDs. I was more of a fan of the instrumentals on that album though. Somehow since then, I've acquired Apple'O, the Runners Four and a whole bunch of other releases which I've only given very cursory listens to.

I have a little trouble getting past the singer's voice - I appreciate it, but it pierces sometimes, and I don't think it suits the music.

But I'm interested in giving Deerhoof another chance. What's a good album to get back into them? I heard Milkman's a bit of a blip on an otherwise excellent discography, so this might be why I'm lukewarm to them. A POX might be nice?

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Monday, 10 January 2011 13:00 (fourteen years ago)

Runners Four is still my favorite. This one has some great individual moments, especially when they rock out a little, but on the whole it feels a bit slight for some reason. Maybe it will improve with time.

skip, Monday, 10 January 2011 13:27 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, that's what I've had so far from this band - a number of great moments surrounded by reams of flab. Rainbow Silhouette Of The Milky Rain is an all time top tune for me.

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Monday, 10 January 2011 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

weird, i've always found them to be one of the most consistent bands out there, and the albums seem to be of a piece rather than a collection of tracks. maybe because they usually change up their instrumentation/production techniques between each album?
anyway hyped for this, leaked tracks have been great so far. glad they are breaking out the samplers again.

zappi, Monday, 10 January 2011 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

Man, normally I really like Dusted, but today's review of this album is really awful. The closing paragraph:

Alas, the manic pace of the total structural collage makes it awfully hard to settle in as a listener. Deerhoof vs. Evil has a Guernica quality, in which pleasure and humanity are sublimated to the grotesque, which in turn is justified by the supposed inevitability of rational progress. We’ve been down this road before. It led to Agent Orange, scabies and the Alan Parsons Project.

Although, it actually makes me want to hear this album even more for some odd reason.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 20 January 2011 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

it was a strangely-worded review.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 20 January 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

i now want to hear deerhoof cover the alan parsons project

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 20 January 2011 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

Haha, good point!

The whole thing just read like one of those really awkward and awful cokemachineglow reviews.

love "super duper rescue heads" tho it's all i've heard off vs. evil. it is a kind of deerhoof i like, though i can see as how it might try the patience of wrong people.

i can't say that the review is off base in its general analysis of their sound and its implications, but god that final paragraph is horrid. why use "sublimate" when you seem to want "word that means the opposite of sublimate" (the burial of a socially acceptable impulse in a transgressive one). "justified by the supposed inevitability of rational progress?" i get the joke, but jfc.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 20 January 2011 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

So disappointed by this album. It's sad to see a band you love lose their spark in real time..

Davek (davek_00), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's great. it's a bit more mellow than previous records but wouldn't say they lost their spark. super duper rescue heads is so brilliant, sounds like what i imagine paramore or whatever bullshit would sound like in a better world.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, I like this better than Offend Maggie. It's "quirkier", which for deerhoof often does translate to softer tones, and more synthy stuff (which I love, being a big Milkman fan). "Must Fight Current" is beautiful

Dominique, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

yes. and "Secret Mobilization" is awesome. those 'hoof riffs!

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just a dream, you see.

These posters should not have much trouble with this album, I think, at least not for this reason?

should i go see deerhoof tonight? i like greg saunier vs i'm very tired.
