I love E Luxo So a lot but have never picked up anything else.

I lettered in Sam and Carl (HI DERE), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

i can't decide... curious to see how votes break down between the pre- and post-MMN material

another al3x, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

Too hard to choose! The last 3 (Mi Media Naranja, E Luxo So, and Fixed::Context) were all excellent. I guess I would go with E Luxo So at the moment because it is so mysterious and unsettling. The songs on Fixed::Context seemed to achieve resolution, by contrast.

Lazarus Niles-Burnham (res), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

My pick goes to Mi Media Naranja, though I've heard and own 5 of the 6 albums and all are great to fucking fantastic.

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

Somehow I never got into the early ones even though I am a huge fan.

Lazarus Niles-Burnham (res), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

white album probably for nostalgic reasons but they're all good-to-great except maybe the first one

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

Self-Titled album is the standout. The Peel session they did from that album is just tremendous.

Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

Went with Mi Media Naranja

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

ASR. aesthetically perfect.

^^^ EXARCTLY

MMN always seemed kind of like a low point to me, I guess I need to check it out again.

short-haired valium crazies (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

s/t for me - tried hard with MMN and ELS but always found them kinda boring.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

ASR. aesthetically perfect.

^^leaning towards this. fixed::context might be #2. i like MMN but i think they're most compelling when wringing the most they can out of the fewest elements. need to revisit prazision

another al3x, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

Love the self-titled. "Mid-Range" is incredible, especially that sudden turn at the 2:10 mark:

First three are all ace, actually. Then the band shifts a little and my interest wanes a little, too, though I see why they went the direction they did.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

another al3x, Thursday, 14 October 2010 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

cathedral-sized jellyfish in your mind (Trayce), Thursday, 14 October 2010 02:35 (fifteen years ago)

I guess like "La Bradford"

cathedral-sized jellyfish in your mind (Trayce), Thursday, 14 October 2010 02:35 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure it's La-Bradford. Voted fixed:content

Mark, Thursday, 14 October 2010 03:01 (fifteen years ago)

The Labradford reunion tour needs to happen.

Bill in Chicago, Thursday, 14 October 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

Fixed:content is so... Stately and Elegant.

This poll is fantastic, there really is no wrong answer!

Somehow I never got into the early ones even though I am a huge fan.

Yeah, same here. :\

For me, this'll be a close toss-up between MMN and ESO.

Daria Law (Leee), Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:37 (fifteen years ago)

The first one isn't very good, from what I remember, at least not on the level of the ones that followed.

I wish these records didn't have vocals.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

I wish everything they did had vocals!

short-haired valium crazies (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 14 October 2010 08:38 (fifteen years ago)

i like the nerviness the vocals add on the earlier albums

another al3x, Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

no surprises here. i ODed listening to all of these for a week. my brain started moving at labradford speed, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it was all growing a bit dim. prazision has grew on me though, along with the peel sessions. think i'll have another binge sometime soon as winter settles in.

maybe I'm weird but E Luxo So and Fixed::Context do it for me way more than MMN

the tune is space, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

speaking as a person who didn't get round to voting may I chidingly say that Prazision deserved more <3

I can't wait to get home and climb aboard... GROCERY GROIN (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

Kinda surprised the s/t didn't do that well.

track 3 on E Luxo So remains one of the prettiest pieces of music ever

which is the one where someone leaves the studio in a huff

haha track 3

i love it. about time i gave the whole thing a spin again.

nagl dude dude dude (ledge), Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:26 (twelve years ago)

that's what I'm doing now, partially due to the new These New Puritans album

Is TNP related to Labradford?

I've been having a Labradford renaissance lately. Listening mostly to the last three and especially MMN, which is so good.

The new Pan American is also pretty good, by the way.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:20 (twelve years ago)

Very good indeed. No direct connection between TNP and Labradford to my knowledge.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2013 03:41 (twelve years ago)

been meaning for years to pick up their last one which I heard good things about

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 31 May 2013 08:30 (twelve years ago)

Seconding the new Pan American also. Glad I gave it a listen

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 31 May 2013 09:04 (twelve years ago)

I have not been able to get into the early albums at all, which is funny because it seems like they are a lot of people's favorites. I am voting for E Luxo So. It always makes me think of a lonely, windy night on an empty street.

Poliopolice, Friday, 31 May 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)

Is TNP related to Labradford?

I brought up Labradford when talking about the new TNP due to similarities in the way the songs are arranged; as far as I know there's no actual link between the two.

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

Aha. Well, that's still enough for me to check out TNP, which I've heard of but never heard. Always assumed they were a noisy indie band. Maybe I confused them with Times New Viking.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 31 May 2013 14:41 (twelve years ago)

They started out as a not-really-noisy-but-energetic indie band and have since turned into something completely different and awesome

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

What he said. Basically they've pulled a Japan/Talk Talk etc. level of reinvention, aided/abetted by Graham Sutton of Bark Psychosis who arguably did similar.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)

Where should I look for the newer sound? I'm listening to "Hidden" right now and I'm not getting a Labradford vibe in the slightest.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 31 May 2013 16:17 (twelve years ago)

I'm listening to the preview of the new Pan American on Soundcloud, and one track sounds like a drone remix of "Glory Box." :D

Ou sont les Sonneywolferines d'antan? (Leee), Saturday, 1 June 2013 17:49 (twelve years ago)

Whole album is on Spotify, FYI.

one year passes...

i want to love the first song on Mi Media Naranja but the high-frequency tone drives me absolutely INSANE. i feel like an old man but it seriously ruins the song for me. at first i thought it was some sort of mistake or weird pressing issue but apparently they did it on purpose?

It's on purpose. I actually asked Steve Albini in person about it once (he engineered Fixed::Context, where a high pitched thing shows up again in the song 'David'). He shrugged and said 'those guys liked adding weird sounds.'

Poliopolice, Thursday, 5 March 2015 04:25 (ten years ago)

Hahahaha.

It's there on their remix for LFO's "Freeze" too.

Romo... ROMO! Bring Back Sergio Romo! (Leee), Thursday, 5 March 2015 18:58 (ten years ago)

I agree that some of these 'weird sounds' are unnecessary, and maybe even detract from the songs despite being interesting and unusual sounds and textures. I really love the song 'David', but that goddamn tape hiss sound that they bring to the forefront just kills me. WHY???

That's something that came out in January I think. I think the physical release was cassette only but I'm not totally sure.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 6 March 2015 05:00 (ten years ago)

The link just above is for the release that can be bought as a cassette (US $5, UK £8.00 or so) but which can also be downloaded for free.

djh, Friday, 6 March 2015 21:31 (ten years ago)

Oh DOWNLOADING NOW THEN
