Would a dj night featuring all BUBBLEGUM music be any fun? can you dance to the wombles and the archies or would you feel dumb? how widely would you have to define bubblegum to make it work?

fritz, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard there is one in San Francisco called "Smile". Has anybody been to it?

fritz, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Bubblegum music = ACE for dancing to.

But do you mean bubblegum as an era, a genre, or an adjective?

According to bible, Bubblegum Music Is The Naked Truth, Bubblegum = everything from Archies to Bay City Rollers to Britney Spears.

Would you have a night making ME happy or Tom Ewing happy, or both?

Me, I'd love to see a Boyce & Hart era bubblegum night, but I'm sure such a thing exists somewhere within the London mod/garage scene already.

kate, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I guess that's the question: how widely to define it. I'd be inclined to be more old-school than maybe Tom would, but I think a bit of new stuff would be fun too.

fritz, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi! I like old bubblegum too! I just think it's been left on the cultural bedpost a bit long.

Tom, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's probably just me but a night featuring all anything starts getting on my nerves after a little while, I prefer more of a mix.

Nicole, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

true. maybe an all old bubblegum night would be a bit moldy oldie sounding.

fritz, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is that by drawing the boundaries tightly you can then mess a little bit more with your audiences perceptions - i.e. you can make an aural case for stuff being bubblegum and by doing so surprise people. Whereas saying 'we play anything' and then playing anything isn't much of a surprise :)

Tom, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom-sama! Yes! soften their resistance with monkees and 1910 fruitgum and then wheel in the Trojan horse.

fritz, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Better the Trojan rabbit.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i'm sure it would be fantastic. i wouldn't go tho.

unknown or illegal user, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom's right; a fucked w/ bubblegum night would be ace. A whole thing of say Kasenetz-Katz would rot your teeth. Although you shouldn't be attempting to do one without playing the Ohio Express 'Down at Lulu's'.

Ellie, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Would a dj night featuring all BUBBLEGUM music be any fun?
Only if's it Bazooka Joe, 'cuz Hubba Bubba or Bubblicious are for bandwagon-jumping trendoid posuers. And don't even get me started on the midlife-crisis addled goober dads who think they are cool 'cuz they have a stick of Cinnaburst.

Lord Custos III, Friday, 16 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I finally broke down and bought the "Bubblegum Is The Naked Truth" book and it is indeed amazing. Thanks, Kate. I am now convinced that a Bubblegum DJ night would fly. The book takes a good liberal view of b-gum, with lots of cool digressions along the way. Everything you'd ever want to know about the old school as well as solid stuff on Britney, Spice Girls et al (which is already kinda old school in a way) from the likes of Peter Bagge & Chuck Eddy. The editor, Kim Cooper, is now working on a VH1 TV miniseries documentary on Bubblegum and Pop which is due out in November. Should be interesting.

So let's get to work here, playlist suggestions anyone? Ellie has already pointed out that "Down at Lulu's" is indispensibile. What else would get you out on the floor at this hypothetical night?

"Annette's Got The Hits" - Red Cross
"Bubblegum Factory" - Redd Kross

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, them...

There's this song on the Redd Kross website called "Take Your Stupid Ass Home" that you might like Fritz, they sample the Poppy Family's "Happy Island".

I forgot to add the masterpiece that is Daniel Boone's "Beautiful Sunday" to the list. Have you read Robin Carmody's excellent article on Britgum in Freaky Trigger?

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Robin's article is totally cool -- except when he calls Edison Lighthouse 'over-rated'!.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

There's this guy on ebay who sells bootleg 'rare' bubblegum comp cd's for 18 bucks a pop. The sound quality is pretty good. I nominate Joey Levine's "Come On My Baby" for the set list.

Kerry, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

woah, kerry's discovered the motherlode of rare garage. just type "bubblegum" in on ebay and look for the "bubblegum motherfucker" series of discs, a bit expensive for cd-r's but some tempting stuff there.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all sixties gum and soft psych rarities, like 18(!) volumes worth. probably the most fantastically wrong turn ever taken.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, yeah--I was wondering about that guy's stuff. Is it all undiscovered gems, or is there a lot of crap?

What do you think, Kerry? Worth 18 bucks?

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The CDs are worth the price, as they each have, like, 36 tracks on them. I only bought one, but I intend to buy more. I do find myself listening to it a lot. I'm hoping to get a few more and maybe even try to DJ a bubblegum night at some bar here.

If you listen to Live365 ever, you should check out this station called "Bubblepoppsych" - it's all late 60s and early 70s stuff: lots of bubblegum and glam rarities, a balance of British and American stuff. I've got it on all the time. The sound quality is bad, but then so was AM radio when I listened to this stuff the first time around.

Kerry, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The CD I have is definitely better than those bubblegum comps that were on Varese Sarabande a few years back - more 'hard' stuff and less wimpy stuff. If you're that into bubblegum (as I am), I'd say pick up a few. The one I got - I don't remember which volume - but it has Joey Levine's "Come on my baby" because I love that song. It's pretty good, good housecleaning music.

Kerry, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, my user name on ebay is 'bubblegumm'. There's also some person on there who refers to him/herself as 'kasenetz'.

Kerry, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for all the tips, Kerry! I always forget about online radio.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, they're playing Silverhead right now!

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
that Bubblegum Motherfucker series has disappeared from ebAY!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 6 February 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone here could hook me up with a copy of any of those discs, or the sunshine pop ones, well then.. that'd be very cool indeed. The Varese comps only go so far.

maypang (maypang), Friday, 20 February 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

same here

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Fritz, do you have a tracklist for these? I'm curious as to what's on them.

maypang (maypang), Friday, 20 February 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, I was always going to order them next week from eBay and then they disappeared... there were dozens of volumes though. the greatest hits of bg mf one looked awesome.
