What albums, if any, started out with the worst rep and became their most popular/well received, and vice versa. Make sense? Thanks in advance...

I was going to mention Exile, but balked because of Christgau's famous review--also, besides Bangs, I couldn't really think of anything specific as far as negative reaction went. Who reviewed it in Rolling Stone--was it Bangs?

scott walker early solo LPs maybe? 3rd and 4th in particular?
Be Here Now got heaps of ridiculous praise from the UK press when released, as documented in John Harris' book The Last Party.

Also, every Italo Disco record ever.
I remember Be Here Now getting five stars in Q, Mojo and Select. Temporary insanity.

Almost all of the UK music mags were the same, and the broadsheets went ape over it as well. That Q review really is astonishingly bad.

Spin gave it a 6 and called it "the British Lynyrd Skynyrd."

I seem to remember Head Music by Suede getting really good reviews when it came out, Uncut said it was their best album and Melody Maker even made it their album of the year. Even though it was A New Morning really killed their career, I think Head Music is seen as a huge failure these days.

Nope, everyone still hates this (even though it's the best Daft Punk album).

I remember Nebraska getting some pretty sniffy reviews in the UK at release. No idea what US critics had to say, though.

Waiting For The Sirens Call - New Order
Ok, it hasn't actually been reappraised as a classic, but it will one day!

Double Fantasy got flogged in Rolling Stone before John Lennon died, and then after his death won a ton of Grammy's and whatnot. Its reputation is probably reasonable now, though.

Maybe not everyone trashed them, but Christgau sure hated Sabbath:
Black Sabbath [Warner Bros., 1970] C-Paranoid [Warner Bros., 1970] C-Master of Reality [Warner Bros., 1971] C-We Sold Our Souls for Rock 'n' Roll [Warner Bros., 1976] C
