Eggshell for me. I also quite like the alternative version they contributed to that Artificial Intelligence compilation.

"Eggshell" was my fave for the longest time, now I'm not so sure. It's been a long time since I've listened to the entire album.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 17 October 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

basscadet probably, but any one of 5-11 is a contender. except lowride, ugh I hate it, that stupid jazz riff. one of perhaps only two ae tracks i would always skip - other is dial off gantz graf.

ledge, Sunday, 17 October 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

Totally. Yeah, that bit in the middle of "Lowride" is kind of Ae at their most Kenny G, innit?

Okay, I didn't see this poll. Would have probably voted for Windwind, although I haven't heard any early Autechre in years.

sam500, Thursday, 21 October 2010 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

autriche and bronchus are the weaker tracks on this, but surprised no vote for windwind and i have a soft spot for maetl

Surprised at the vote for "Kalpol Intro," which would've made a nice thread-title pun, come to think of it.

Homo Sabean (Leee), Friday, 22 October 2010 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

Doctrine

corey, Friday, 22 October 2010 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

Listened to this when I woke up this morning. Perfect for cold winter mornings when you're still creaky. Lowride and Maetl are the best tracks I think in the end.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 22 October 2010 09:11 (fifteen years ago)

Again with the Lowride! I find this love for it odd not because it's 'jazz', obviously that's just a personal bete-noire, but because to me it's just not Autechre. You could argue that they have other jazz-esque moments, e.g. the 'twelve notes in search of a melody' thing on Cichli, Draun Quarter, and others, but those just don't have the pongy jazz odour of Lowride. It scares me to imagine an alternate reality where they go more in that direction, and instead of being one of my best loved groups, become one of my most hated.

Linking to the next poll for sake of posterity: Y'all don't have any idea of what's POLLING on -- Autechre :: Basscad :: EP1

Kalpol Introl was the first Autechre track I ever heard, via the Pi soundtrack. I remember listening to it on headphones at night on a train platform in college and thinking "Wow, electronic music can be DEEP and SOULFUL"

still come back to this one. Best Autechre record.

I just listened to it again yesterday! Despite Ae's reputation as a flagship IDM act I feel like this is the only release that really fit into that scene. There's actually a pretty standard house breakdown bit on "Doctrine" that is so weirdly unlike them. I mean as messed up as bits of this album are, in retrospect it's only been a springboard to the whacked out things they'd try later.

So, the 'jazz piano' bit in Lowride is a sample from DJ Premier's In Deep Concentration by Gang Starr. Which is itself, according to contributors to whosampled dot com, a combination of a replayed phrase from The Awakening by Ahmad Jamal Trio (this seems like speculation) and a sample from Summer Madness by Kool & The Gang.

The Autechres wearing their Gang Starr fandom on their sleeves there, I guess. Still, it does whiff strongly of that era of Mo' Wax ersatz jazziness, and of course it was included on one of those Headzzz compilations. I like to think of James Lavelle taking the blame / credit for that sample.

Also, is this the only song they've released with identifiable TR-808 sounds (if that's what they are)?

Finally an answer to what links Miles Davis, Autechre, and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.
