Best Rolling Stones Single (Post-Dirty Work)

Cuz the distance from 1987 to 2010 is equal to the distance between 1963 and 1986. Including "promo" singles (because why not) but not old songs remixed, played live or remixed by the Neptunes.

(I looked for a similar poll but didn't find one, sorry if it already exists-ish)

should be "not old songs reissued, played live or remixed by the Neptunes."

da croupier, Monday, 18 October 2010 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

A Bigger Bang their best in this period obviously, but "Mixed Emotions" is my favorite. I guess I can't separate my attraction from it being the first Stones single I heard.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 October 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

Highwire is my favorite here, but only because Mick's Don't Tear Me Up isn't eligible. And yes, A Bigger Bang is the best album of their 2nd half. God I feel old.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 18 October 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

ha i had totally forgot that "highwire" even existed.

prob going w/ "mixed emotions"

hypnosis is the reason some Jewish people backed him → (will), Monday, 18 October 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

"rain fell down" wasn't a single? last new stones song i actually heard on the radio. voted "rock and a hard place", a retread of the undercover sound which distinguishes it a little from every other decent track up there (of which "mixed emotions" seems the clear frontrunner up there, though i do remember enjoying "you got me rocking"). mick really is the huge weak spot on alot of these. would take "wicked as it seems" over any of these.

balls, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

"rain fell down" wasn't a single?

woops! accidentally skipped it, but it was indeed a single - top 40 in the UK even

would take "wicked as it seems" over any of these.

qft, i haven't heard all these songs but the majority seem to be about how mick wants all the sex or mick regrets having all the sex

da croupier, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:35 (fifteen years ago)

btw from 'satisfaction' -> 'undercover of the night' = from 'wicked as it seems' to now

balls, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

what are even any of these songs

ice cr?m, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

stones are like built for that game: twentyodd years where alot happens constantly, quickly, and then twentyodd years where nothing happens sporadically, slowly.

balls, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

I went with "Mixed Emotions", don't know all of these (esp. in the middle period here, did spend some time with Bigger Bang). "Take It So Hard" is the best Stones-related single released during this period. I like it so much I almost voted for "Almost Here You Sigh" b/c Keith wrote it at the same time.

Mark, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

is ice cr/m jessica hopper?

balls, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

I would probably take Steel Wheels over Bigger Bang.

Mark, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

No 'rain fell down' :(

ice cr?m, Monday, 18 October 2010 03:32 (fifteen years ago)

sorry again "rain fell down" fans, but there are plenty of other "sexy" grooves and songs with rain imagery to choose from

"Just Roughage"

da croupier, Monday, 18 October 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

"mixed emotions" is the only song here i even vaguely recall. hell, it's the only title i recognize (aside from "like a rolling stone" lol). so that. but i don't think i like it much.

no love for "Saint of Me"?

I think Rough Justice is pretty awesome.

tho i might take aerosmith's stupid ballads over the stones' ... hmmmm

no love for any of the Voodoo Lounge era stuff?

I'll go with "Almost Hear You Sigh"---love Mick's enunciation throughout, but in particular on the "silky smooth like wine" line; love Keith's classical guitar playing; love the space of the production.

I actually did something similar a while back: Rolling Stones singles poll: post-Tattoo You

but I'm not at all calling firsties or saying this thread should be locked or whatever, because an Undercover single ended up dominating that poll more than I would've expected and made me wish I'd set the timeline a little later, so I'm really interested to see the results of this one.

underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

the stones had a single called "Sex Drive"?

tylerw, Monday, 18 October 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

"Almost Hear You Sigh" is certainly my favorite Stones ballad of this period. The thing's got two middle eights.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

"Highwire" made Greil Marcus' singles list that year.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, the only meh tracks are the perfunctory Voodoo Lounge singles, in my opinion.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

nice double-tracked Mick vocals on "almost hear you sigh"

Yep, it was the follow-up to "High Wire." And it has possibly the worst vocal of Jagger's career.

Both are on Flashpoint.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

haha, i'll have to check it out.
i remember making fun of "love is strong" when i was a teenager, but i think i secretly liked it.

tylerw, Monday, 18 October 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

i liked it better then than i do now.

hypnosis is the reason some Jewish people backed him → (will), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

incidentally, are we in agreement about ABB's superiority to the other albums? I'll concede it's not much better.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)

that seems to be the general consensus, but i honestly haven't heard anything except singles from anything post-Undercover. and apparently i missed a fair share of those.

hypnosis is the reason some Jewish people backed him → (will), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

I listened through the Stones' post-Dirty Work oeuvre this spring. I have a soft spot for Steel Wheels on account of history/timing at least so it's hard to say for sure, but A Bigger Bang feels less like work than Bridges to Babylon.

Euler, Monday, 18 October 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

btw listening to Keith's demos of "Almost Hear You Sigh", from X-pensive Winos days. The second is better b/c the synths smooth things out, but they're both interesting takes.

Euler, Monday, 18 October 2010 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i don't get the whole "a bigger bang" is the best thing...

S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

i've heard it - definitely think it got overpraised, just because it wasn't awful/embarrassing.

tylerw, Monday, 18 October 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

I've heard all these albums, and, yes, the performances and songwriting are sharper all around on ABB. It got overpraised cuz lots of baby boomers, invested in the Stones as myth, finally settled on the perfect late-career-masterpiece narrative: Charlie Watts' health forced Mick and Keith to Grow Up.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 October 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

Top Five:

1. Mixed Emotions
2. High Wire
3. Almost Hear You Sigh
4. Rough Justice
5. Oh No Not You Again

"Look What The Cat Dragged In" is my favorite Stones song post-'91.

Wandering Spirit and ABB are as good as we can expect from Jagger.

actually if it were technically a "rolling stones" song the answer would be "take it so hard" by keith & the x-pensive winos

S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 October 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

^^^^^THIS
That whole album was streets ahead of anything the Stones did pretty much post-Some Girls.

hmm, i've never heard that whole xpensive winos album (tho i think i watched a concert vid once?)

Wandering Spirit, which you can find for $1 in any used CD store, is such a keeper, despite the useless "Use Me" cover with Lenny Kravitz.

voted for "Love Is Strong," always kind of assumed everyone agreed that was one of the Stones' best later moments until my previous poll thread proved me wrong. Voodoo Lounge in general is pretty good.

worst here is probably "Streets Of Love," which was just painful to experience the few times VH1 played the video.

Mark G, Friday, 22 October 2010 09:42 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

By the time of Tattoo You I was exhausted. Entirely drained of ideas. I told Chris Kimsey to ransack the archives. "Start Me Up" was a very old song, with some 20, 30, 40 takes as a reggae ... and one with a real rock guitar. It turned out to be our last real hit, and the arc of our career would look a lot different if we hadn't found it. With it, we could plausibly least claim to be hitmakers in the 1980s. "Waiting on a Friend," that symbol of our new-found maturity, was, if memory serves, from a centuries-old session with me and Mick Taylor. About our work from the rest of the 1980s and 1990s, the less said the better. Can you sing a single chorus from Dirty Work? Name a single track? We certainly don't play songs from those records in concert if we can help it. --Fake Mick jagger

I can yell "ONE HIT TO THE BO-DAAAY!!!!" but I don't remember if there's anything more to the chorus than that.

"Mick's album was called She's the Boss, which said it all. I've never listened to the entire thing all the way through. Who has? It's like Mein Kampf. Everybody had a copy, but nobody listened to it. As to his subsequent titles, carefully worded, Primitive Cool, Goddess in the Doorway, which it was irresistible not to rechristen 'Dogshit in the Doorway,' I rest my case."
