the only one I own is College Dropout. he strikes me as a singles artist by and large. and a fun, provocative one, for the most part.

I like 808s and Late Registration about equally, but I went for 808s > Late Registration > The College Dropout > Graduation. Graduation never made much of an impression on me, but I always enjoy it when it's on.

first 3 are super close, i think i enjoy graduation more than most ppl and late registration less than most ppl, i'm not sure how strong an argument i could wage for college dropout being the best but definitely the most i liked kanye.

iatee, Saturday, 23 October 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

good poll whiney

College Dropout > 808s > Late Registration > Graduation

- 'college dropout' is def 'favorite albums ever' for me
- 'late registration' is great in its own right, and i've argued that it's kanye's 'definitive' album & i've grown to love it over time when it can be separated from critical evaluation a bit & its clunkers seem less important and the enduring songs... more enduring -- that said it does have some real clunkers -- also has dope album cuts, like any album w/ "drive slow" & "gone" & "crack music" is pretty hard to fuck with
- i've said before that i don't really dig 'graduation' -- some of the tracks on this album are his most minor ever imo, like "big brother" & "homecoming" & "everything i am" & "drunk & hot girls" -- also the whole production aesthetic i don't really think is his best either -- has a great run of singles & some dope album tracks, but this one aged poorly for me almost immediately
- '808s' to me is a total classic -- kanye is a great pop musician & i think he was able to succeed in writing an album of awesome melodies & hooks -- beats were surprisingly interesting as well & generally the whole thing just exceeded even my lofty expectations -- even the total ugliness of the autotune works for me

J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 October 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

College Dropout > Late Registration > Graduation > 808s

really love both the first two, late registration can just seem a bit bloated sometimes. basically like both the last two - both have total classic moments along with totally embarrassing ones, and i definitely appreciate how he kept me interested in him rather than underwhelming diminishing returns on a successful formula. that seems to have died this year - i'm so bored of people talking about what crazy thing he's said or tweeted, and none of his music is provoking a reaction either way for me.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Saturday, 23 October 2010 08:59 (fifteen years ago)

some of the tracks on this album are his most minor ever imo, like "big brother" & "homecoming" & "everything i am" & "drunk & hot girls"

haw i have a real soft spot for "homecoming". and the "can't tell me nothing"/"barry bonds"/"drunk and hot girls"/"flashing lights" run is what makes the album for me - the sticky, woozy, plasticky beats + the partying, the bravado, the slight cokey sense of wrongness.

i'm really gonna be interested in the trends of data here. I bet 808s is gonna be a lot of people's 2nd and 4th picks

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 23 October 2010 11:49 (fifteen years ago)

808s > Late Registration > College Dropout > Graduation

not sure if i've got the order right after the first two really. i really don't get on with kanye's rapping so 808s was always going to be the winner for me.

C. Tuomas Howell (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 23 October 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

for me:

College Dropout - 2nd best because it's ultimately more 'important' than it is 'great' and probably would've been better as the 2003 pre-release version before he swapped out some songs and added those horrible skits

Late Registration - best because same weaknesses as CD for the most part but the strengths are stronger (Kanye's rapping, song concepts, creative production, etc)

Graduation - 3rd best because removing the skits and throwaway experiments from the formula of the first 2 albums was a much better idea in theory than in practice, "Flashing Lights" is classic and a couple other songs are great but a big downward slide in the rapping and it's just kind of weak as an album

808s - worst because his singing sucks w/ or w/o AutoTune and everything about this album is cravenly trend-chasing and emotionally toxic

Long live smooth music..... ;) (some dude), Saturday, 23 October 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

^ this, although i'd probably sooner put on graduation than dropout now.

^^^^ Graduation may have three or four crap tracks, but it's got a victory-lap feel that to me is infectious. LR has lots of cool experiments that I could only hear once ("Heard'em Say").

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 23 October 2010 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i don't really have a bad thing to say about graduation. it is probably his least 'weighty' release but in terms of the kanye narrative it remains something of a relief and i continue to appreciate that.

Kanye's last album, 2008's 808s and Heartbreak, was heavy on the Auto-Tune and stark synths, but relatively light on grandiose ideas. It was a necessary detour that expanded his emotional palette; a bloodletting after a harsh breakup and the passing of his mother that manifests itself in Twisted Fantasy's harshest lows.

Gah. This is pissing me off. 808s was a substantial narrowing of his emotional pallete.

based lord sotosyn (The Reverend), Monday, 22 November 2010 06:45 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i thought the same thing -- in fact, kanye's whole existence and popularity and transcendence was PREDICATED on him coming into rap with a wider "emotional palette" than every other rapper
