i think it's the lead singer sounding exactly like ian curtis more than the band sounding like joy division.

I personally find that the singer sounds like Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip, but I guess that kind of comparison is not as buzz- worthy as one with Ian Curtis.

Not nearly as much as to read about the comparison everytime I see their name mentioned. I agree it's more the vox than anything else, but then again I hear a lot of David Byrne in there too.

The lead singer sounds BLATANTLY like another singer...but not Ian Curtis. I just can't for the life of me pinpoint who this singer is. But I know that the resemblance is more than just uncanny. It's downright bizarre. I'm racking my brain for the answer and coming up with nothing, though.

we all know he sounds like the singer from kitchens of distinction...and maybe just a bit like richard butler.

Interpol sound like the Chameleons ie, alright but not as good as the bands they cop. their drummer is splendid though. The only band which remotely resemble the JDs (and not on record so far) are Britsih Sea Power, the frustrated chefs and postmen from Brighton. Weird stares, army surplus clothing- that's the Joy Division I remember.

We did this thread before. I went on about how to me he sounds more like Patrick Fitzgerald from Kitchens of Distinction. Once I got the record I decided that they can be said to sound like any of a hundred British indie bands from 1980-1993, depending on how you feel at the moment: on the album there's a bit that's all Ride, a bit that's all Smiths, a bit that's all Chapterhouse, flashes of the Church and Echo and the Bunnymen and Versus, a whole bunch of very Trompe le Monde steps, and a thousand naggingly familiar similarities that you can project onto any band you want to at your leisure. They're one of those "summary" type diffuse-influence bands, and like the best of that breed their strength is having really great material and executing it perfectly.

Obviously Versus and the Pixies aren't British, I mean to erase the nation specifier. Also I just remembered that they sound like Bedhead for two or three seconds as well. They sound like lots of stuff, almost all of it good.

Not Kitchens of Distinction, because I've never heard them.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes we did that before and I still think that the singer sounds very much link John Cale. A lugubrious voice but rather settled. No way he sounds like Ian Curtis. And the Kitchens and Distinction's singer sounds like million others, his voice was not noteworthy at all, whereas the Interpol guy's voice has something about it.

link->like obviously.

Actually thinking of it: the guys from the German Rolling Stone (the new number came out yesterday) interviewed the singer and asked him about John Cale and he said that he always confounded him with John Cage but somehow knew that he had been in The Velvet Underground. He found the comparison quite cool because of that.

It'd be funny to hear a band fronted by a John Cage soundalike. Closest I can think of is maybe Fred Schneider solo.

Fantastic cd. Just bought it today and am really enjoying it.

Bauhaus, not Joy Division - there's quite a major difference, actually. Not that any of the New Wave of Closet Goths would notice.

Jerry (Jerry), Friday, 23 August 2002 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
alex in montreal - the person I listened to this album with made the Gord Downie comparison as well! I think I can hear it too - in certain spots at least.

woo. the new Scene With No Name. let's run it as a lead.

i like Interpol. mainly because i know if i was in a band i'd probably want to pretend i was Andrew Eldritch too.
