this happens to me all the time, which is getting especially frustrating since i'm getting within reach of finishing a record and still don't have a band name. the last couple I was disappointed someone else had already used, although I'm not sure if they're actually awesome, were The Call Letters and The Saturday Saints. in some ways being able to google any idea you get and make sure noone's thought of it first is great, in some ways it's kind of a bummer.

what's even worse is when you reject a name for its inherent crappiness only for a band to use it later
eg oslo, caffeine, probably others..

Has there ever been a punk band called Dole Scum?
― A brownish area with points (chap), Thursday, 28 October 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)
What about choosing a random number, like say... 42 but the only way to refer to your band has to be through mathematical equations that resolve to 42.
(5x8)+(100-98)
― Pinktits, Thursday, 28 October 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)
It was a while back. I knew there was this band called Undertones and though how cool if somebody named themselves The Undertakers.

With rock music being several decades old & a worldwide phenomenon it is pretty difficult to find something nobody else will have thought of. Pretty inevitable really.Do wonder if there are any bad puns that could have only been formulated recently because of recent cultural/technological development that won't automatically become dated?Or recent great lyrics that one could play around with. There was something about minor talents borrow, great artists steal.I always wanted to put a band together and call it Bruce Springsteen.Maybe Bruise Pristine?
― Stevolende, Monday, 26 October 2015 08:42 (ten years ago)
Categries are:
1. Band names that have become reuseable as the previous manifestation is now expired as a marketable force
e.g. Blue, The Undertakers (see above), The Primitives
2. Same pronounciation, different spelling
e.g. Motley Crew (a pub band from round our way), Cortinas/Courteeners, Churches!/Chvrches
3. Pay me for the rental
e.g. Boyzone, Nirvana
4. Pick your own nose
e.g. Eurythmics/Rhythmix -> Little Mix
5. Other.
― Mark G, Monday, 26 October 2015 10:27 (ten years ago)
I just looked over at Dime and found that there is a garage band from Belgium called Thee Marvin Gays.Quite amazing really.
