This one is very easy for me: at a time when techno to me was Orbital, the Chems, and the Prodigy, the first time heard I heard "Lost," I thought it was TEH FUTURE (corny as it sounds). And it STILL sounds like nothing I've ever heard since, as far as I'm concerned.

It's a two-way between Lost and Flutter for me. Lost is grebt as one of the few ae tracks with recognisable vocal samples but I think Flutter wins it with its bouncy melody, those huge bass growls, and of course the non-repetitive beats.

^ ack, should be on 'amber' thread.

Yeah, this is all about "Lost" vs "Flutter". In truth, I don't think this EP has aged all that well. What they were striving for with "Lost" was perfected on later releases like "Anvil Vapre". "Djarum" was always a bit ho-hum and "Flutter"'s impact is lessened now that we're 15 years removed from Criminal Justice Act -- it just seems like an odd-sounding curiosity now, albeit one with some pretty mad (non-repetitive) beats.

^^agree about lost. did flutter have any impact at the time? on individuals or otherwise? i give it an extra point for trying anyway. the drums still sound great and i wish they did more in that vein. also has one of their classic extended beatless fadeouts. voting for that

Ditto. I wish Autechre did more stuff along the lines of either "Lost" or "Flutter" or the stuff on Garbage (which I think is aesthetically closer to Anti than Anvil Vapre, e.g. cavernous/mountainous ambient vs., I dunno, industrial proto-glitch).

Bump.

I've always loved Flutter, but when I dug it out again for this poll I was surprised by how much I liked Djarum, which I'd never really paid any attention to before. So I'm going to be its single vote, I reckon.

seven years pass...

"flutter" is just astonishing

kinda love how the "non repetitive beat" thing became this sort of protest gimmick, and not the sort of track that Autechre probably was gonna make anyway :)

frogbs, Monday, 30 April 2018 14:34 (seven years ago)

i mean correct me if i'm wrong but at the time (anti came out before amber) it wasn't yet necessarily "what they were going to make anyway"
