mogwai.co.uk :

As you may or may not know Mogwai have been spending the summer recording their new album, we've not said much about it so far so this is kind of what this email's about. So, here goes:

We're delighted to announce that the new album called, ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’ will be released on 14th February 2011 on Rock Action Records.

‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’, band’s seventh album, was recorded over the summer at Chem 19 Studios, in Hamilton and mixed at The Castle Of Doom. ‘Hardcore’ is produced by Mogwai confidante Paul Savage (the man behind Mogwai’s exceptional 1997 ‘Mogwai Young Team’ album) and is the follow up to 2008’s magnum opus ‘The Hawk Is Howling’.

The album will be released on February 15 2011 in the US where Mogwai have recently signed to the illustrious Sub Pop label for North America.

‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’
White Noise
Mexican Grand Prix

Mogwai are: Dominic Aitchison, Stuart Braithwaite, Martin Bulloch, Barry Burns and John Cummings.

There will also be a Limited Edition version of the album, which includes a bonus CD featuring a 26 minute long piece called ‘The Singing Mountain’ recorded for Douglas Gordon and Olaf Nicolai’s ‘Monument for Forgotten Future’ installation in Essen, Germany

was 'the hawk is howling' a magnum opus? i didnt even listen to that one

hælvæticæ (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

a: no, it wasn't, but the first 3 tracks + Scotland's Shame were good

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

opening track an all-time career highlight

acoleuthic, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that was press release embellishment at its finest.

The George square thing is a Facebook group.

C. Tuomas Howell (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

Or event maybe.

I can't bring myself to be excited for a gwai album anymore tbh

C. Tuomas Howell (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Hey guys, Mclusky/Don Cab/Us Maple called, they want their song titles back

etc.

Master of Treacle, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

Mogwai pre date mcclusky and have always had daft song titles.

C. Tuomas Howell (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

actually none of those bands called because they all broke up.

there is no chance of this being good, right?

Nope.

Cliff Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone else feel their departure from Matador was a bit unceremonious? 10+ years as their U.S. face and then they just off and head to Sub Pop?

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 28 October 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

All these titles are great!!

Do not get this exchange at all! The last album, The Hawk is Howling was really good and, sadly, very under appreciated. Will this be a patch on Come On Die Young or Young Team? No. But the idea that this band has run out of interesting songs is so wrong.

"I am a fairly respected poster." (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 28 October 2010 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

It might *well* be a patch on CODY tbf

records you will avoid based on the title alone

I really enjoyed that track!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 22 November 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

titles alone make this the best album of 2011.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 22 November 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

My god, that track isn't awful!

Ou sont les cankles d'antan? (Leee), Monday, 22 November 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think the album will live up to its title, but if the rest of the tracks approach "Rano Pano," then it's got some promise.

leTeReL (Leee), Monday, 22 November 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think the album will live up to its title

it couldn't possibly.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 22 November 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

Reason for Valentine's day release - being otherwise ignored by a holiday that usually takes predominance over smallish indie bands with names derived from 80's horror flicks?

Good news, everyone! (kelpolaris), Monday, 22 November 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

Not a good album/kind of a mess, vocoder'd effects are sore thumb-worthy

I don't think the album will live up to its title

it couldn't possibly.

Sorry, I meant that I suspected that the album's quality is inversely proportional to the title.

find the track from the video p boring tbh :( shame. inclined to like the 'gwai for a variety of reasons, including loving young team, but really cannot get with pretty much anything post-happy songs.

Mogwai's quality control has never been their strong point, but there's some dull stuff on here, and "Thatcher Death Party" is lazy tripe. Having said that, half of it is pretty good - I reckon you could get an excellent album out of this and the last one.

Classic: "White Noise", "Rano Pano", "Death Rays", "Too Raging" and "Lionel Richie".
Dud: the rest.

Thought this was pleasant enough on first listen but 'Monument for Forgotten Future' is amazing. Shame it's not actually on the album proper.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 11:16 (fourteen years ago)

I've not bothered investigating this at all. Should I? And where is Monument available then?

Ukranian crocodile that swallowed a mobile phone (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 12:30 (fourteen years ago)

It's on a bonus disc, but also on Spotify.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 12:36 (fourteen years ago)

just checked out the bonus track. absolutely wonderful.

m the g, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 12:47 (fourteen years ago)

Apparently it's the soundtrack to a German art installation involving a singing mountain?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 13:01 (fourteen years ago)

On We7 the last track is listed as "Music For A Forgotten Future" and is 23 mins long, is this the same track as the Monument one you mention Matt? It is utterly gorgeous!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

there was a board i used to read years ago, and every time mogwai came up there was this one guy who made a point of noting that their drummer sucks. i didn't (and still don't) agree w/r/t young team and cody and stuff, but for their recent material their drummer completely sucks.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

Great interview with Ian Rankin and Stuart Braithwaite on The Quietus, who says he listens to 'EP' for up to 10 hours at a time when writing.

Obese Pony-hating Liberal (Billy Dods), Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

well its no young team, but its still pretty damn good.

who cares about the drummer, its about the guitars anyways.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

he's a stiff--they write these riffs that should groove in some capacity and they just don't

call all destroyer, Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

i dont know i never thought of mogwai as a band with groove. when i think of mogwai i think of feedback and effects, not groove.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

yeah imo over the last few albums they've tried to write a lot more riff=based songs and they're just kind of terrible at it.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

that i agree with. but i like this one a hell of a lot better than the last few.

on first listen, this is way better than the new radiohead for starters - sounds like they've added a couple of sonic tricks to their repertoire and the tunes are strong

I have now had "Rano Pano" ruined for ever by the suggestion that you sing the "Red and Yellow and Pink and Green, Orange and Purple and Blue" song over the top of it.

Went to the Birmingham gig last week, and the new songs work really well live (especially in a smallish venue). Still couldn't compete with the encore of "My Father My King" though.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

This is so much better than their last two albums. They got too hung up on being a balls-out rock band, I'm glad they've gotten most of that out of their systems now.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

so good this one.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah it's great but really 'Music For a Forgotten Future' blows the whole album proper out of the water.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 17:39 (fourteen years ago)

xp. eh? there was precisely one tune on each of those albums that qualifies as 'balls out' (mega snake and batcat). if anything, hardcore is on the whole more rocking.

but I would agree it's better than the last two – perhaps three or four - albums.

(more love for forgotten future here, btw)

more of my thoughts on this album here. it's good, not their best, i like it overall though. think the review came out a bit more negative sounding than i intended. but truly, the bonus CD is the best thing they've done, pretty much ever.

I decided to give the usually -bar one or two- limp, laconic Mogwai another chance.

I was drawn by the title and the artwork - both superb.

This is the best thing they have ever done. Without a doubt, in my mind.

I could list the bands they've ripped off with each track. Their usual targets plus Fuck Buttons.

But this time, they at least emulate.

Great, consistently good album. Thanks
