Taking Sides: Classic-or-Dud vs Search-and-Destroy?

C-or-D is more entertaining for the people posting, because it lets them work themselves into a frenzy slagging off bands; while S&D is more useful for the people reading, since it actually gives the ignorant observer some interesting music to search out.

Since I don't post much, and I like having interesting music to search out, I side with Search and Destroy. More of these threads please!

Of course they're both obviously better than Taking Sides threads, which are all completely worthless.

I like S&D the best.

I like myself. Seriously, Classic Or Dud.

I have been trying to revive Search & Destroy, not because I think it's very much inherently superior, but simply because there are so many fewer S&D threads than CoDs. (A look in the archive will swiftly demonstrate this.) So I felt a bit sorry for S&D. I say, we should have more S&D. And I also think we should be able to have both S&D and CoD for the same band.

I like Classic or Dud best. I was thinking how about an "J'e accuse" section? But I couldn't think of any artist to accuse...

I'm a bit lukewarm on S&Ds. Most of the time I can't contribute to them 'cause I haven't heard enough of the artist's music.

The problem with Search and Destroy as a reader is that I just don't give a damn about 90% of the bands people do S&Ds here for. It's the same with Classic or Dud but with that there's more room for people to go on tangents and perhaps then you'd get a more interesting reading experience - that being said I don't actually READ any CorD about a band I'm uninterested in so I wouldn't know.

So if S&D were about bands I actually could be bothered to even WANT to think about, much less actually think about, they'd be cool. But if I ever see a S&D: Mariah Carey, I will destroy myself.

And Taking Sides is the WORST idea ever for a thread. :P

Given that having a separate Search & Destroy and Classic or Dud thread for the same artist seems a bit weird, and that the two questions both end up getting discussed anyway, why not just dispense with the distinction altogether and just call it SDCD? OK, not very catchy. In fact, why have these headings at all? I like it when it just said 'Stehpin Merritt', even if it was by mistake. You can be more specific in the full text of the question if you feel the need. And I'm bored with those four words anyway.

Argh! These meta-questions are making me want to gouge my eyeballs out!

Seriously, though, I like talking about things other than just bands all the time. Especially when the discussions turn into battles of wit or pissing matches. S-and-Ds can be intersting, but I agree that if you're largely unfamiliar with the artist, they just aren't fun to read.

What Nick says is cogent and, on the face of it, hard to dispute. And yet - 'S&D' does make a certain kind of precision necessary from the start. Perhaps what I mean is: it gives you a format, a structured starting-off point.

three weeks pass...
Leading on from what someone said on the Elvis Costello thread about 'classic' implying ossification, I've never much liked the whole 'Classic or Dud?' wording - 'classic' is a bit Q, isn't it? And a bit "Oh yeah, Weller - fucking classic man, you can't argue with that" pub bore. I could have sworn we'd had a 'CLASSIC OR DUD: CLASSIC OR DUD' thread, but I can't seem to find it now, so I've posted this here.

If I had my way, I would destroy both of COD and SAD at this point. Initially they were a good way starting off a conversation about music, but at this point it's become:

"I like X! He's so cool!"

"No - X sucks, he's such a whore"

etc....
