Straight-up song-of-the-year contender for me, and I've been thinking for ages it's far too good to sit unnoticed in the UK funky thread. Anyway, it Wut deserves its own thread then this does three times over. Something about the swell of the chorus, and those strings just does it for me...

Straight-up song-of-the-year contender for me
― Tim F, Friday, 29 October 2010 11:19 (fifteen years ago)
It sort of pushes the same buttons as Groovejet for me and I have no idea why, the sort of effortless melodic glide to it. Also it has that feeling of having always existed that funky vocal anthems occasionally throw up, see also In The Morning.

Okay I'm using that gif for everything from now on.
I hope it's not just us 3 in this thread.

i was zinging the wut thread obv.
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)
anyways yeah this song is terrific - perfect even - but as discussed on funky thread there are other perhaps more flawed songs i feel more of an gristly attachment to and would put up more of a fight for. i feel weirdly guilty about this.
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 11:52 (fifteen years ago)
has this STILL not been signed btw? #epicfailyetagain
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

I get this. "It's What You Do" doesn't sound like it needs personal jockeying (and hence is somewhat indifferent to whether you like it or not).
Although if it's still unsigned maybe it does!
― Tim F, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)
haha yeah, it is just so obviously a hit that there was nothing left to do but give it a thumbs up and carry on digging elsewhere.

^ impressive. their lightness of touch is striking i think - beautifully honed in comparison to funkystepz' cartoon extremes, for instance.
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:09 (fifteen years ago)
Moreover in a lot of ways it's the imperfect amateurish enthusiasm of a lot of the funky vocal anthems that is so endaearing (though some of them def. could do with more work - "Round & Round" for instance has an awesome chorus but the verses definitely require some workshopping).
Whereas "It's What You Do" is simply perfect, a burnished masterpiece. It's not at all endearing.
― Tim F, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:11 (fifteen years ago)
I assumed the relatively high production values of the video meant it had been signed. Weird, because it's daytime radio friendly in a way a lot of funky tracks aren't. It's the strings, mostly, but also the clarity of the vocals.
― Matt DC, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:13 (fifteen years ago)
xp yeah hence anger when someone like the fool clark comes along like "oh this is the stuff FINALLY". essentially 'what u do' is already so good to go that it's unfair to both it and funky to keep them in the same general sphere. (although they still are, obviously).

was this the first of this super-popular-underappreciated-one-foot-in-and-out of funky ilk? i'm trying to think. ('round & round' definitely applies.)
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)
don't hold martin against the fives! that's hardly fair...
― Tim F, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:21 (fifteen years ago)
oh yeah no absolutely, that was just the one-time bout of fury. anything straying in vaguely uncomplimentary proximity to screama/farah will always get the attack dog mode of course.
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:32 (fifteen years ago)
well that's understandable.
"All My Love" would be the latest (future) candidate, no?
― Tim F, Friday, 29 October 2010 12:33 (fifteen years ago)
a standout candidate most definitely, although i might make the small argument that while fuzzy logik is clearly the poppiest of the funky-bracketed producers he hasn't quite cracked the effortlessness of fives/pessante/chuckdemgee: neither 'in the morning' or 'all my love' breathe like the others do, they kinda hold the same high pitch.
think i already mentioned 'all my love' reminds me of the neptunes, and it might indeed do well among general r&bists rather than in the charts (or er private mental zone of the charts i guess) per se.
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 13:08 (fifteen years ago)
(tbh though all of that i just wrote is a distinction so minor i barely care about it myself.)
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)
Would Rudimental's "Sexy Sexy" fall into this category also. (as much as I love it I don't think "Midnight Affair" does, really)
― Tim F, Friday, 29 October 2010 13:13 (fifteen years ago)
this category i just made up? i see no formal reason why it shouldnt have but i'm not sure it ever quite captured the necessary funky-transcendent life of its own as it were.
― r|t|c, Friday, 29 October 2010 13:20 (fifteen years ago)
It's not even a super-super-favourite of mine but it seemed very popular at the time.
― Tim F, Friday, 29 October 2010 13:23 (fifteen years ago)
But anyway back to The Fives or we'll scare everyone away.
Matt this is the Chuck Dem Gee tune "Round & Round":

I was about to ask what Round & Round was. Make It Funky For Me is classic for all time obv.
― Matt DC, Friday, 29 October 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)
NB. As I said above I'm not totally sure about the verses of "Round & Round". Chorus pretty undeniable though.

Hopefully the "success" of "It's What You Do" will give a second lease on life to this prior Fives tune which I never even heard at the time:

it really is. kinda pwning ill blu on the sly as well.
― r|t|c, Friday, 12 November 2010 12:27 (fifteen years ago)
Um... what is that Roll Deep tune? I mean, I kinda like it, but it sounds like Swedish House Mafia crossed with Jacques Lu Cont.
I feel very warmly towards Brazen's raps on even the silliest of modern Roll Deep tunes.
Whereas the Wiley remix is just straight brill. Ha ha those little synth bleeps even sound like they're samples of an Ill Blu tune ("Green Light" remix sure, but actually more specifically the remix of H20's "Pink Love").
― Tim F, Friday, 12 November 2010 12:36 (fifteen years ago)
i already played my "delightfully incoherent" card for in at the deep end but there is (barely) conceivably a grim case for some brave soul to make with this new one, yeah.
― r|t|c, Friday, 12 November 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)
Do I have to actually, you know, listen to the album in order to stake out that position?
― Tim F, Friday, 12 November 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)
I think Tim F. has infected my brain - I came across this track in the 2010 poll and I was like "damn this is good, tim f would probably like this" and then I scroll down and see he put it as his #1
