New album in February.

Cool.
Does anybody know what happened with those two other SFA albums that were supposed to come out late last year? I just remember there was a ton of material waiting to be released...
― Cunga, Monday, 1 November 2010 21:46 (fourteen years ago)
Didn't hear of those. Several articles claim they've split up, though.
― teflon monkey, Monday, 1 November 2010 21:49 (fourteen years ago)
WHAT?? They split up????
― Mr. Snrub, Monday, 1 November 2010 21:53 (fourteen years ago)
Guto was touring w/ Spectrum, Daf's got another LP w/ Rhys Ifans, Cian's hgot the Acid Casuals and Gruff's got his movie/guest vocalist slots/Tony da Gatorra album/upcoming solo album. There's at least some kind of hiatus going on.

Meantime, his collection of hotel shampoos:

I don't think they've genuinely "split." They still have to make their mega 10th record.

New song and shampoo stats are awesome btw

This sounds like it's going to be insane.

Their 9th was no good sign in that respect. It was by far their worst album ever. Making an album with only fast songs was a big, big, big mistake.

Can't wait to hear their 9th album.
― Bentley Rhythm Trayce (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 2 January 2011 12:01 (fourteen years ago)
DD/LY was great; my favourite of theirs since Rings.

I feel they have been on a slow decline for a long time, but that decline suddenly got very fast last year. I guess "Radiator" will remain their pinnacle, followed by "Phantom Power" and "Rings Around The World". Those three were all marvellous albums, up with the best that Music has ever been able to produce. So even if they stop now (or eventually release nothing more of value), they can be proud of what they've already achieved. Just a shame "Radiator" or "Rings" never became the huge crossover hit album that both should have been.

You gonna check out Gruff's new one? I think the direction he took it is going to be more to your liking. That said, I loved Dark Days/Light Years as well. Ah well.
― teflon monkey, Monday, 3 January 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)
I will. I didn't like his solo debut so much, but that was partly because of one very annoying overlong repetitive track with hundreds of verses that got on my nerves to such an extent it made me dislike the entire album. Gruff Rhys is obv the number one creative brain in SFA, and using that brain will ultimately probably make his solo stuff good as well.
― You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 3 January 2011 03:27 (fourteen years ago)
Oh I heard that in Fopp, and liked it enormously because of the very long track.
Compare to "Gideon Gaye" which drove me nuts for the reasons you added 2 days ago, blimey,,,
― Mark G, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 09:50 (fourteen years ago)
"Gideon Gaye" is so wonderful for the first 3-4 minutes anyway. More like "Hey Jude" whereas "Skylon" most of all remind me of a similar zillion verse song by Kaleidoscope on their debut album. :)

New track.

Hang on, this will be Gruff's third solo album. Skylon was on the second one.
― groovypanda, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)
Skylon was also, like by a bazillion miles, the best thing on said second album.

You can stream the whole album now. Most mainstream-sounding Gruff Rhys album ever... peculiar following up the Tony Da Gatorra mess.

Huh. It's gone, before I got a chance to listen.
― Jouster, Friday, 21 January 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)
It's great and full of stuff I wouldn't have expected: saxophone, fuzzy SFA-sounding electric guitar, piano ballads, etc.
:)!

I'm really excited for this new album, Shark Ridden Waters is one of the best things he's ever done.
Great video too.

Seems to have flooded the internet in all the appropriate places.
― mjqjazzjbar (teflon monkey), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 04:34 (fourteen years ago)
It's really good too. I haven't really being paying attention what Gruff or SFA have been up to the last few years but this has a lovely mellow 70's feel that's definitely hitting the spot right now.
― Number None, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 13:25 (fourteen years ago)
That's El Perro Del Mar on "Space Dust 2" and apparently Miles Kane on guitar according to an interview I just read.
Isn't "If We Were Words (We Would Rhyme)" one of the loveliest songs you've heard? I can't get enough of that one.
