i swear i had this closing in more like 5 days?

anyway, albums real close to my heart. i THINK i'm picking bloody hammer, but that means i can't pick sputnik, or click your fingers applauding the play, or creature with the atom brain, or...! maybe i should have left an option just for the riff from i think of demons.

Cold night for alligators ... but this was tough - I play this rekkid a lot ...

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

Is this the one that's more or less the same as "I Think of Demons?" "The Wind and More" either way.

Borbotemungus or something like that. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

The thing in the Elevators book about him writing his songs with "Jesus" and "God" in the lyrics and changing them to the devil and Lucifer and stuff is so great.

I think of demons...for you.
That song fills me with a unique kind of joy.

i love every song SO MUCH

i voted for click your fingers just because i figured it wouldn't get a lot of votes and i love it a lot

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

this is one of those records i bought on a whim years ago, knowing only a little about the elevators just having heard them come from my roommate's bedroom, and that one dude from the band 'had some solo records about demons or something', and it's hardly left my regular rotation since. i remember the first time i played it, in my friend's car after i first picked it up, and the entire car being pretty knocked over by it. or maybe i was the ecstatic one!

but anyway, this record is for all time

xpost click your fingers applauding the play is at the top of my choices! still haven't decided.

arby's, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

btw does anyone know anything about duane aslaksen? has he played guitar on much else other than a few of roky records? dude's leads are totally commanding, and SO awesome.

arby's, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

i bought the "where the pyramid meets the eye" covers record when it came out and i was in high school. i could never find any of his stuff because i did not live in the sort of place that would stock these records, so it wasn't until i worked at a record store in my early 20s that i was able to find elevators stuff...and this.

this record is as reliable a good times machine as any other record i know

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

that covers record has the lol judybats on it

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

wait so no stores where you were from carried any elevators/solo erickson, but DID carry the covers tribute? that seems so weird.

in my hometown you would never have seen either. or much of anything, really. iirc the only place you could buy cds was at pamida. pamida!!

arby's, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

well, i had to drive to canton to get it. it was full of "modern rock" artists -- rem, john wesley harding, julian cope, butthole surfers, lots of other people i've forgotten -- so the cool record store near the mall had it. i forgot what this store was called, but it was by belden village mall. my friend's parents took us there and we bought lots of cassettes. ha.

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

btw i didn't know who roky erickson was, i just heard "if you have ghosts" on the radio and liked it, so i bought it

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

this was 1990 or sthg?

"I Think Of Demons," in part for sounding eerily like .38 Special.

True story: I coincidentally first listened to The Evil One a day after seeing Electric Six cover "I Think Of Demons" at Maxwell's, totally not knowing the song or even who they were covering. They also did "I'm A Demon And I Love Rock'n'Roll" (all part of a "Demon Trilogy" with their own "Electric Demons In Love").

This poll happened so quick some folks missed it. Plus I was real busy with work all week and wasn't here much. I just saw Roky live Friday night in DC. Good but not great. He was nervous about how his guitar strap would go over his shoulder and kept having a bandmate help him with it. He soloed on lots of songs but always turned his back to the crowd. There was some hesitency at times in his raspy vocals. But considering what he has been through in life, it was good just to see him up there onstage.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 7 November 2010 13:27 (fourteen years ago)

I woulda picked "If You Have Ghosts" had I known about this.

chromecassettes, Sunday, 7 November 2010 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

i think i forgot to vote in my own poll! maybe shouldn't have set it to end a night i knew i'd be away.
"i walked with a zombie", though i like it, was probably the first i singled out as definitely not a pick for me; would have gone with either bloody hammer or click your fingers, and would have felt mild guilt for having not voted for two headed dog or others depending on whatever mood struck me at the time.

i like to fantasize about him putting out another album, a rockin one like this, and he's backed by zz top, with billy angel on autoharp again (who btw is in a band with a dude from the angry samoans called the blood drained cows?!?!?), and it's the ~~album of my dreams~~

I first became aware of this album when my son was very young. I picked out Two-Headed Dog and I Walked With A Zombie for a Halloween mix CD that I played non-stop in my car during October. On November 1st, I still had it in my car, and the sad, nostalgic quality of the song strung a pang in my heart at the holiday's passing. I had walked with a zombie last night.
