Sure, this was more of a media invention than a genuine scene, and more garage rock has come out in the last few years than did when the mainstream music press was into these guys, but this stuff was vital "starter indie" or whatevs for a lot of people my age, and enough time has passed to look back on it without the feeling of being sold, I think. These were the bands I remember making magazine covers and being presented together as proof that there was a movement goin down.

My bro released the Hives LP and singles in the US 2 years before that album broke big on MTV. It was weird to see the delayed response hit so heavy.

HIVES by a million billion miles

Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

Hives for me as well. landslide coming?

Fellini.Kuti, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 04:13 (fourteen years ago)

the strokes got me to indie rock. so, there.

Death Cab for Kuti (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 04:17 (fourteen years ago)

weird but the strokes is the only one of these i ever listen to now, so they win by default

Sniiiiip! (electricsound), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 04:20 (fourteen years ago)

I'd say the Vines were the only band that was overhyped. These guys were all worthy for the moment.

bendy, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 04:32 (fourteen years ago)

White Stripes for me. First album got a lot of play on community radio, I remember being all over it. Even saw them at the Evelyn, lol.
Strokes briefly.

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 04:44 (fourteen years ago)

And yeah, the Vines felt over when they started, I wasn't a fan.

White Stripes is and was the only band on this list that isn't completely embarrassing

jar jar bank$ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 04:45 (fourteen years ago)

beg to differ, i don't really know their music but i did try to watch that jimmy page/the edge/white stripes movie and anything not dealing with jimmy page was really cringe enducing. check it out. shasta.

white stripes. and i'm not even really into the white stripes.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 05:02 (fourteen years ago)

Stripes. I don't think you could make a movie like Under the Great White North about the other bands and have it hit my heart nearly as hard.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 05:32 (fourteen years ago)

Northern Lights

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 05:33 (fourteen years ago)

putting the stripes in this is like putting Mudhoney up against three Silverchairs

Uh white stripes by a million fucking miles

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 05:34 (fourteen years ago)

would rather listen to the first two strokes albums than anything by the hives/vines or any white stripes non-single

iatee, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 05:39 (fourteen years ago)

but would rather listen to anything by the hives/vines/white stripes than the third strokes album

iatee, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 05:40 (fourteen years ago)

Stripes.

Borbotemungus or something like that. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 05:42 (fourteen years ago)

White Stripes have at least twice as many good songs as all the others put together.

Veðrafjǫrðr heimamaður (ecuador_with_a_c), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 10:24 (fourteen years ago)

I want to give props to the Hives for not being the only band of the four not to seem like genuinely awful human beings, otoh that's not the question so The White Stripes

Let me see. Catshit, dogshit, bullshit or batshit. What a decision!

Wheal Dream, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 11:36 (fourteen years ago)

what have White Stripes done to make them seem like awful human beings?

Mark, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

really just thinking of Jack here but basically shit on everyone who gave them a leg-up once they had the clout to do so, Long Gone John from Sympathy For The Record Industry (who out out their first two albums) especially notable amongst them

Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

I can think of reasons for and against all the other 3, but can think of no defensible reason for voting for the Vines, the band who finally made me realise I didn't actually have to keep buying the NME every week

(obv had been complaining about it for some time up to that point but still buying it for the listings, which I could never get to by that point as I had no transport to London, and the crossword, which I would never actually remember to do)

PS A+ display name DJM

fred aboombong (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

The Vines. But that is largely because they were not only a garage revival band, but also had some great Supergrass harmonies to go with their fast and furious garage songs.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, and, The Strokes were not really garage at all, were they? They happened at the same time, but musically they have more in common with Interpol, and with the postpunk revivalists that would come out of the UK later on.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

hmmm, the rawness in tracks from the first album easily clasify them as a so-called garage revival band

Death Cab for Kuti (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

no, I think Geir is right OTM the Strokes being more postpunk revivalists, along with Interpol, YYYs, Franz Ferdinand

otoh he is dead wrong about the Vines, who for all I know never stopped sounding like a (more) mentally-handicapped Puddle of Mudd...

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

in fact I think the whole garage-revival thing is kind of stupid, and FK is far more OTM by describing these bands as what they were: starter-indie

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

The Strokes are the best of these bands.

A brownish area with points (chap), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

The Hives by default. I find the other three an actual chore to get through a song, let alone an album. I've never tried listening to a Hives album but have made it through a few songs over the years. I do like the main hook of "Seven Nation Army", but then Jack opens his mouth and I'm done.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

I'll go with The Strokes, Is This Is is a superb album, overhyped a bit (as the other bands in this poll) but not too much, still a very fun listen

although to be fair - I like some of The Hives singles but never heard their earlier stuff, The White Stripes - never really got into elephant, but singles were fine, and The Vines - liking them was one of the mistakes of my youth, duh

V79, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:53 (fourteen years ago)

I still don't get the hate for the third Strokes album. Like, at all.

Tub Girl Time Machine (Phil D.), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

The Strokes made the best, most exciting single album.
The Hives were the most fun live by a mile.
The White Stripes were the ones with the talent and work ethic to actually make a career.
And the Vines were ... I don't know. Better than their current reputation suggests, but victims of ludicrous hype.

ithappens, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

Is This It is decent & that's it...I never really felt like it was that exciting, and I can think of at least two Stripes albums that I prefer it...

only! assholes! write on doors! (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think it was so much hate for the actual music as what the music was portrayed as representing by the indie/broadsheet press.

A brownish area with points (chap), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

I mean I actually quite like the music, but I used to resent it being proclaimed extraordinary or revolutionary. to me it just sounds enjoyable and well done.

A brownish area with points (chap), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

I remember first seeing this Vines single and thinking they were reviving Nirvana (esp. the vocals!) rather than anything Garage Rock:

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

They're the worst of this lot. Really tame.

A brownish area with points (chap), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

xp I think that's kind of a given, I mean you could be genre-fascistic about these bands not being garage rock but their appeal was pretty much that they weren't produced like either Korn or Oasis

Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

guess I was way off re: a hives-sweep

I guess jack white has far and away had the best career of the bunch, but there's something I find oppressive about most of his music that prevents me from listening to it.

This, on the other hand, is rlly fun:

White Stripes all the way. it's funny how most of these seem like novelty acts in one way or another - the Stripes just have a better songwriter than all the rest

ah jeez, heaps of it about. check goner recs & boards; terminal boredom for reviews, info & discussion; garage-centric labels like hozac, in the red, rob's house & douchemaster; anything associated w black lips or king khan/bbq. tip of the iceberg, really.

there is nothing about the Hives that doesn't sound awful to me -- the vocals, the guitar tone, the drumming, the production

FF are not garage rock, and their breakthrough single arrived three years after the stripes, the strokes and the hives' breakthrough.

two weeks pass...

What? Where? I would love to hear more of this kinda stuff. I still stan for garage rock, fuck the haterz.

Oh man, there's way too much actually. I can recommend the following:

The Beets - Spit on the Face of People Who Don't Want to be Cool
The Black Lips - Los Valientes Del Mondo Nuevo/Good Bad Not Evil
Cheap Time - Cheap Time
Harlem - Hippies
Intelligence - Fake Surfers
King Tuff - Was Dead
Love is All - Nine Times That Same Song
Meth Teeth - Everything Went Wrong
Nice Face - Can I Fuck It
No Bunny - Love Visions/Raw Romance
Nodzzz - Nodzzz
Smith Westerns - Smith Westerns
The Strange Boys - And Girls Club
Thee Oh Sees - The Master's Bedroom is Worth Spending a Night in
Times New Viking - Rip It Off
Vivian Girls - Vivian Girls
Wavves - Wavves/Wavvves
Woods - Songs of Shame

Also, I can recommend the live shows from King Khan/BBQ Show, Jacuzzi Boys, and Kurt Vile, but I don't have any of their records. I also hear the names Hunx and his Punx and Ty Seagull thrown around with those above a lot, but I've yet to knowingly listen to them.

and genre purists might debate labeling all of the above as 'garage rock,' so be aware of that.

Fellini.Kuti, Friday, 3 December 2010 05:53 (fourteen years ago)

Oh shit, I almost forgot caUSE co-MOTION!, who're really great in that Beat Happening kind of way (same goes for The Beets)

Fellini.Kuti, Friday, 3 December 2010 05:56 (fourteen years ago)

And Black Lips are probably the place to start if you want a good single recommendation. Good Bad Not Evil seems to be a common favorite. One of their earlier records is also pretty heavily rec'd, I think it has Bloom in the title. Haven't heard it obv.

Fellini.Kuti, Friday, 3 December 2010 05:58 (fourteen years ago)

The Go!!

Just More Jammy (Eazy), Friday, 3 December 2010 06:06 (fourteen years ago)

let it bloom is the album you're talking about, F.K, and yeah, it's great. far and away my favorite black lips LP. the early stuff has moments, but gets by mostly on charming dishevelment and occasional flashes of brilliance. plus yeah, i love their fake "live in tijuana" LP, valientes del mundo neuva. they need a comprehensive singles collection, as a lot of their best stuff came out that way and remains uncollected.

2nd king tuff's was dead, nobunny's love visions and the oh sees' the master's bedroom... off that list. it's mostly good shit, but those stand out in my mind. definitely check out king khan/BBQ & ty segal if you're into black lips and oh sees type stuff (corresponding respectively). king khan & the shrines' what is? LP is fantastic, everybody should hear it, and though ty's put out a ton of shit in a short time, his last few full-lengths have all been uniformly excellent.

my favourite garage band of the 00s, ladies and gentlemen, please let me introduce you to: The Hunches

Babylon and zing (stevie), Friday, 3 December 2010 09:43 (fourteen years ago)

hunches yeah. were electrifying live. also unmentioned so far & worth a look:

cheater slicks - hideous dirge garage lifers, obvious inspiration on the hunches, and still going strong unto nowadays. their whiskey (1993) and don't like you (1995) helped set the stage for the "real rock" explosion of '99 or whenever the fuck it was everybody started talking about the strokes. barely get a mention these days.

reatards - of the jay similarly named. this is how you kill people. they put out some records which now cost too much money. after that, jay and alicia did lost sounds, who put out three or four fantastic, waved-out synth/garage/black metal records before collapsing in hideous acrimony. you should buy a copy of black wave (2001) and play it a lot while wearing shades.

the mummies - have a lot to answer for. for one thing, northern california. for another, costumes because they wore them while playing hideously violated surf music which made a whole bunch of stupid people want to do the same thing which became intolerable very quickly. but they were great and smelled bad and had a very cool car, kind of like the ghostbusters. it doesn't matter what record you buy, because they all sound the same, except don't buy that shitty one that's supposed to sound good.

purling hiss - i'm sticking this in here because he's making music now and i would like to seem less old and more current. unfortunately, this music sounds hella old and was very likely made by a hippie which is okay because he is like the shaky, sleazy-biker-girlfriend-having, bad drugs kind of murder hippie. i don't really know really. i'm just making this up. he's probably an ordinary guy with a imac and a old datsun and two well adjusted kids in daycare, i don't know. thing is, the music is super fucked up, trashed out guitar noise jams that goes on forever and ever until you have to turn the record over and it's like a half hour later and you don't know why because it was only like two songs. shit it's not even "garage rock", it's some other thing. forget i said anything.
