I own and like Mutations. Never owned or like a Kanye record.

there's embarrassing and then there's embarrassing

I may be insane but Kanye makes me think of Prince, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles as a great black pop crossover hero (genius?)

Beck makes me think how boring postmodernism can be

So they actually work as opposites to these ears

gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

that is kind of hilarious since Beck has spent more time cribbing directly from Prince, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles than Kanye has

lol tea partiers and their fat fingers (HI DERE), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

possible, but he doesn't move me at all

gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 22:18 (fourteen years ago)

sea change > 808s, it's the only beck album i like tho

kanye > beck overall obv

No love for this poll?

gospodin simmel, Friday, 5 November 2010 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

both are magpie provocateurs that leave me cold for the most part (especially lately). but Beck's run from One Foot in the Grave > Odelay > Mutations > Midnite Vultures is pretty amazing and probably a more sustained run of releases than Kanye will ever manage. Haven't felt compelled to buy any Kanye albums beyond the first one, but he's had some decent singles and been mildly amusing as a pop buffoon since then.

I think a lot of people are burnt out by this Kanye. I mean, can you even say/hear/read his name now without some kind of subconscious eye-roll? Beck's catalogue is much more consistant in comparison and any heavy-handed attempts at depth were pulled off without being as embarrassing as Kanye's. This whole Dark Sad Twisted Nightmare era is complete self-parody, which is fine, but it's missing the entertainment aspect. Something about his latest projects just seems so...predictable.

I miss the days when I thought of him as Kayne.

kkvgz, Friday, 5 November 2010 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

I can't even keep track of what Kanye's doing anymore - it all just seems like this endless stream of over-hyped puerile stunts

the Whiney G. Weingarten Memorial 77 Clique (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 5 November 2010 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

Kanye leaks a track that samples King Crimson and features Q-Tip, Rick Ross, Pete Rock and Chris Martin while skydiving onto the set of the MTV Music Awards!

*zzzzzzz*

^^that actually happened.

lol lex, you should listen to Midnight Vultures sometime

DJP, Friday, 5 November 2010 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

is that the one with the really embarrassing single called "sex laws" or something where beck attempted to be prince or pastiche prince or whatever, it was just...shrivel in embarrassment, so bad

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Friday, 5 November 2010 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

huh. seems like it's exactly the kind of thing you would enjoy to me. whole album is very proto-scissor sisters

the Whiney G. Weingarten Memorial 77 Clique (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 5 November 2010 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

but maybe you hate them too haw

the Whiney G. Weingarten Memorial 77 Clique (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 5 November 2010 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

didn't mind a couple of tracks on the first scissor sisters album (wouldn't say i really loved them either, just ok), have pretty much hated everything they've done since. "i don't feel like dancing" is a serious contender for worst song ever made imo.

xps: kanye is all entertainment these days

kkkvagz (The Reverend), Friday, 5 November 2010 22:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, but I get the feeling it's about entertaining himself. he is having a big wank all over us.

Beck. Because I've not seen his penis yet.

Wheal Dream, Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

kanye = entertaining
beck = obnoxious

sleepingbag, Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

there was prob a point where I would have voted kanye, but at this point even if beck were made leader of the church of scientology and spent the rest of his career releasing odes to l ron hubbard, he'd still be slightly less obnoxious than kanye.

iatee, Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

also I mean mutations vs 808

iatee, Saturday, 6 November 2010 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

gotta say after this thread i'm now looking forward to Kanye's "record club" phase when he starts holing up with all his friends in Hawaii making loving song-for-song recreations of Harlem World and A Rush Of Blood To The Head

beck, for his '94-'96 output alone.

Well I've never loved a Kanye record as much as I loved Mellow Gold when I was 14
So Beck, because he was there first

PEAVEY Ó))) (Ówen P.), Thursday, 11 November 2010 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry, i used to worship Beck, had all the rare cassettes, all the radio shows, tons of bootlegs, but as soon as he recorded "Girl", it was his jump-the-shark moment for me. Really atrocious shit that should've just been given to Sheryl Crowe and forgotten by the world.

Haven't heard anything of Beck's that interested me since then. Every new song I hear sounds incredibly tired and bored.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 11 November 2010 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

No comment on anything post-Odelay PS
I have a friend who is with every record like my aunt from Belarus
"The Information is so good! Serious! You should come back and visit!"

PEAVEY Ó))) (Ówen P.), Thursday, 11 November 2010 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

And now I feel guilty for comparing The Information to Belarus
I hear Minsk is in fact beautiful

PEAVEY Ó))) (Ówen P.), Thursday, 11 November 2010 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

I used to like Beck more than I've ever liked Kanye, but I definitely like Kanye more now. So Kanye, fuck the past. Bruneau OTM

fwiw there is no doubt in my mind that sheryl crow is an infinitely superior artist in every possible sense than beck

there are some cool-sounding songs on odelay but i've really never understood the appeal of beck

painful, painful lyricist imo

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 November 2010 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

his lyrics are 90% stream of conscious nonsense and he said as much

can't see why that'd be worse than 2010 kanye

iatee, Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

Given Kanye has now collaborated with Bon Iver I have no idea which option is more Corny Indie Fuxx these days.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

there's no way corny indie fuxx listen to beck even 10% as much as they listen to kanye these days

iatee, Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

^^^otm

the Whiney G. Weingarten Memorial 77 Clique (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

I mean he's basically a 90s artist who has some sort of dedicated fanbase and will once in a while be a blip on the national radar. people might check out his new stuff once in a while out of curiousity. he's like pearl jam.

whereas kanye is prob in the top 5 most popular musicians in the world.

idk how beck can really be considered that annoying today.

iatee, Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

Have you heard those Record Club albums?

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

imo they are annoying

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

and despite being a scientologist, he's always been super quiet about it. and has a better excuse than the rest - he was basically born into the cult!

iatee, Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

beck's the coolest mother fucker i've ever seen, look at him, if i saw him walking down the street i would stop just to say look at that cool mother fucker over there. when i listen to beck i feel cool.

i don't know about his last couple albums though

jumpskins, Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

I listened to like one song but then forgot they existed. I wish I could do that w/ kanye's music.

xp

iatee, Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

Guero is possibly his best album; it's easily my favorite of his.

Baron Strange of Knockin (DJP), Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

Beck.

Btw. Kanye is crazy. I find Coldplay terribly underrated, but claiming they will be bigger than Beatles is madness.
