sandra lee, gimme your alcohol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 6 November 2010 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

"please don't leave me" - never liked it for some reason until i heard it on the radio like 5 times in 2 days this summer and it clicked

wakafledia (k3vin k.), Saturday, 6 November 2010 02:50 (fourteen years ago)

that song depresses the shit out of me

markers, Saturday, 6 November 2010 02:51 (fourteen years ago)

i'd been meaning to do this thread for a minute but i would've done all the singles, some good stuff not on this collection

i'd rank this:
Who Knew
So What
U + Ur Hand
Trouble
There You Go
Just Like a Pill
Glitter in the Air
Sober
Please Don't Leave Me
Stupid Girls
Raise Your Glass
Don't Let Me Get Me

Dear Mr. President

lil bow bow (some dude), Saturday, 6 November 2010 03:06 (fourteen years ago)

when Billboard did their decade-end charts of top artists/songs for various charts Pink was the #1 Pop artist -- gotta say i think that's really justified when you look at how many huge hits she had over that whole period

lil bow bow (some dude), Saturday, 6 November 2010 03:07 (fourteen years ago)

Overall I do prefer her R&B hits. The power chord stuff attempted on "Don't Let Me Get Me" don't work on subsequent rewrites of that sound ("So What," "Raise Your Glass," "Just Like a Pill," etc).

sandra lee, gimme your alcohol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 6 November 2010 03:12 (fourteen years ago)

no "feel good time"!

What happened to "Feel Good Time"?

twisted sister hazel dickens (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 6 November 2010 03:27 (fourteen years ago)

where is "Family Portrait"? :(

Taylor McSwift (Tape Store), Saturday, 6 November 2010 04:02 (fourteen years ago)

this isn't a singles poll - late adopter is polling a greatest hits release

wakafledia (k3vin k.), Saturday, 6 November 2010 04:15 (fourteen years ago)

that has "Family Portrait" on it

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 6 November 2010 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

"Sober" is very underrated

Lostandfound, Saturday, 6 November 2010 06:56 (fourteen years ago)

where is "most girls"?!?!

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 November 2010 07:53 (fourteen years ago)

i don't get why, if she's so intent on disowning her early r&b days, she still put "there you go" on. "most girls" is a 10/10 classic for me. of these, the only two i like are the first two, and i'll vote "there you go". smh @ this woman.

"Don't Let Me Get Me"

the Ford Escort Cabriolet of middle-aged men (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 November 2010 09:03 (fourteen years ago)

"Just Like A Pill" - ALWAYS liked it for MANY reasons even when i heard it on the radio like 5 billion times in 2 years this past decade and it, um, ALWAYS clicked

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 6 November 2010 10:46 (fourteen years ago)

Agree that the R&B singles are the best - though in fact my absolute favourite stuff from the first album is all album cuts I think.

Of this list, maybe "Sober"? Maybe "Please Don't Leave Me"? Maybe "Who Knew"? Good Pink tends to hover around a 7/10 for me.

"Raise Your Glass" is such a 2010 pop single, it's like the sound of all pop music collapsing in a big crunch.

Tim F, Saturday, 6 November 2010 11:48 (fourteen years ago)

^^haha that was basically the gist of my jukebox review that will go up if and when the jukebox ever updates again

i'm really not fond of anything post-"get this party started"; since then everything she's done has been so galumphing and clumsy, from her blaring voice to her basic, simplistic lyrics

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 November 2010 12:15 (fourteen years ago)

MOST GIRLS.

but from this list, 01. U + Ur Hand, 02. Please Don't Leave Me.

prolego, Saturday, 6 November 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah "Get This Party Started" would be my choice on this list! I sorta forget nowadays that she had a career post-R&B but pre-"Stupid Girl".

I think what bugs me most about the "Raise Your Glass" is the non-sequitur flow of controversial signifiers - "party crasher / panty snatcher / call me up if you a gangsta" etc. - which would sound focus-grouped if it was any less lame.

Tim F, Saturday, 6 November 2010 12:20 (fourteen years ago)

to me the Joker quote and the Gaga-esque claims of solidarity with "little freaks" are more problematic, although i still kind of like the song.

lil bow bow (some dude), Saturday, 6 November 2010 12:24 (fourteen years ago)

Moka, Saturday, 6 November 2010 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

Ok got it now it's 'feel good time'. I thought that one was one of her big hits, strange they decided not to include it in the comp.

Moka, Saturday, 6 November 2010 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

Don't know if I've even got a candidate to vote for in this poll - my favorite of her albums is Try This (aka The One Everyone Hated) and the best songs on it were never released as singles.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 7 November 2010 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

I cannot pick one track because most of her best singles come off of Can't Take Me Home. I used to like the singles from M!ssundaztood but they're kind of dated now (Ragging on L.A. Reid changing her image to be like Britney in 'Don't Let Me Get Me', ect). 'Real Good Time' from the Charlie's Angels soundtrack, 'Trouble' and the Try This album are largely forgotten for some reason.

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Sunday, 7 November 2010 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

I think people can still relate to B. Spears and the idea of being compared to her in 2K10.

kkvgz, Sunday, 7 November 2010 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

i'm kind of surprised a) at how highly people regard her first album, for R&B of that period it's solid but imo nothing special and b) how much people spotlight "Most Girls" and how high its chart peak was, since I barely remember that one and heard both the other singles way more.

generally i like the later Dr. Luke/Max Martin stuff best, although I really enjoy Try This too. my favorite is pretty much "Who Knew" but maybe i'll vote for "Trouble," i dunno.

lil bow bow (some dude), Monday, 8 November 2010 03:33 (fourteen years ago)

I love "Don't Let Me Get Me". Was a well-needed kick-in-the-ass for pop music at a time when R&B dominated a bit too much. I guess that is why the R&B/hip-hop fans of ILM hate it.

But I probably would have gone for "Family Portrait" had it been in there.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 8 November 2010 05:20 (fourteen years ago)

However, she kind of lost the grip on the powerpop style as soon as Avril Lavigne appeared on the scene doing the genre better than her.

Missundaztood [Arista, 2001]

Teen idols have matured at their peril since Del Shannon told us the name he was born with, and between the Internet gossip roast and Carson Daly's Dick Clark act, the current crop will have it even tougher. Which makes this meeting of L.A. Reid's double-platinum Philadelphia white girl and justly forgotten 4 Non Blondes emoter Linda Perry even more of a feat. These are pop songs in the sense that they deliver their payloads in 90 seconds. But they're also confessional, dark, downtempo--and, OK, a little gauche sometimes, which just makes them seem realer. Despite Pink's audacious claim that she's not as pretty as "damn Britney Spears," celebrity anxiety takes a backseat to a credible personal pain rooted in credible family travails, a pain held at bay by expression. Artistically, it's a next step for a genre I never thought would take one. I wish I believed Justin Timberlake's solo debut will sound half as honest, frustrated, and fulfilled. GRADE: A

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

everyone one of these songs deserved a vote, especially the three that got blanked

Pink, kind of to my surprise, has been the most consistent performer of her era IMO

Baron Strange of Knockin (DJP), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

odd that "Please Don't Leave Me" is the only song from the last 8 years to get multiple votes. not even remotely one of her biggest later hits!

some dude, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

True, but it is one of her better recent songs. (also: awesome video)

Baron Strange of Knockin (DJP), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

what exactly was so next-step-ish about mizzufdjkslaood? pink's done-me-wrong-ex-pop-product-that's-every-bit-as-contrived-but-now-"liberated" schtick did not even seem new or interesting at the time

i had to google to see if the three exclamation marks in the album title were real, btw. wow.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

I voted for "Don't Let Me Get Me", but "Get the Party Started" was the first R&B song I had heard and liked in years. Maybe since New Jack Swing. It really opened up my ears at a time when I had been mostly listening to rock and Ninja Tune-type electronica.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 10:23 (fourteen years ago)

"Get the Party Started" is not really considered an R&B song. in fact it marked the beginning of her "I'm not R&B!" period.

some dude, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 12:31 (fourteen years ago)

I consider it an R&B song. It's upbeat and dancey and talks about parties. Didn't even realize that she had a period before this.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 12:35 (fourteen years ago)

It's true, danciness, being upbeat and talking about partying are traits unique to the R&B genre

Baron Strange of Knockin (DJP), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

No but...I mean...just.....it's not r&b? what is it?

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 13:35 (fourteen years ago)

Also is very braggy and talks about jewelry and luxury cars.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

White people don't wear jewelry or drive luxury cars.

otherwise, and twat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

it's the clubbiest hit from a pop/rock album full of guitar riffs and songs written by the singer of a half-forgotten '90s alternative band

some dude, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

listen to "There You Go," the one single that was an option in this thread from her R&B first album, and see if you can spot the difference

some dude, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zbi0XmGtMw

one of my favorite R&B songs, according to kkvg's definition

Baron Strange of Knockin (DJP), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

White people don't wear jewelry or drive luxury cars.

Dude, fuck you. We're talking about musical genres, not race.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

We like the cars, the cars that go boom.

otherwise, and twat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 14:53 (fourteen years ago)

apparently you know jack shit about musical genres

Neither does this guy, I guess.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

Bassey is the only singer alive who could take the bouncing, enthusiastic R&B of the original Get the Party Started and turn it into a grand, imperious swoop worthy of a Bond theme; it's a terrific cover version, even if it perhaps didn't quite merit the album attached to it.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

al ship's top 50 r&b singles of the 00s -- which is your favorite?

like, do you know ANY of these songs and, if you do, do you see how they don't have anything in common with "Get The Party Started"?

or back to Pink herself, have you ever listened to her ACTUAL R&B singles:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGfz0fv5wfQ

xp: In this article, no Lex does not know what he's talking about.

Baron Strange of Knockin (DJP), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, but that's all modern r&b! I swear to god, GTPS hearkens back to much older R&B, but that doesn't make it not R&B.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

Old/original R&B is very much tied to the blues progression, which this song is not.

There some hints of Stevie Wonder in there but, particularly in the musical context in came out of where the original R&B hallmarks have been completely subsumed by the pop and rock genres, no one in their right mind is going to look at this song and classify it as R&B without carrying the baggage of Pink's previous work to the table.

Baron Strange of Knockin (DJP), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

But I didn't even know about her previous work!

kkvgz, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

four years pass...

Just bought this album since it's $1 on google play... it's very inconsistent. Pretty strong start, then a bunch of songs that are fast enough but oddly un-catchy, then some songs clearly aimed at tweens (put your glitter in the air, bratz!) Did she buy the cheaper songs from the hit factories? so weird for a big-label star.

aaaaablnnn (abanana), Friday, 9 October 2015 05:45 (nine years ago)

man, totally disagree, the Max Martin hit factory stuff on the second half of the comp sounds so much better than most of the early stuff to me. and "Glitter In The Air" is like the least 'hey kids!' song on the whole comp.

some dude, Friday, 9 October 2015 12:31 (nine years ago)

Did she buy the cheaper songs from the hit factories? so weird for a big-label star.

To my ears she had a fairly big hand in writing them, and the credits bear this out. She finally sounds like how she wants to sound.
