And Michael Alig Did...

...um, what, exactly?

From what I gather, he hosted some parties, and he killed some drug dealer, and he's the subject of a biopic starring Macauley Culkin & Seth Green. (And you think I'm kidding...) So what's the dilly?

New "Everything I Know About New York Club Entrepeneurs I Learned From The A&E Network" answers, if you please.

Nice one David. I think this is a decent-if-brief overview for anyone: http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0213/musto.php

He did a passable Leigh Bowery imitation, there, for a couple of years.

I was going to college (for the second time) in '87--'88, and my buddies in Fashion Design would read Details magazine, which at the time was a far cry from being a men's fashion magazine... it was all, well, details about the (mostly gay) New York club scene, with lots of bitchy gossip. I remember seeing Michael Alig in there loads of times. I never met him, but my impression of him was that we wasn't particularly attractive or charismatic; I wonder how he managed to hold the spotlight (albeit a rather cruddy one) for so long. At the time I was kind of jealous of their (my friends', but also Alig's) exploits, and in a way that kind of negative charm has always held an appeal for me. As far as a fashion influence (I know, Alig had a million looks, but still), he was no, to pick a random example, Gerard Malanga, but I suppose Alig's crowd was a bit younger [than me (but was he?)].

No, no, I'm sure Alig and his crowd must have been marginally older than me, since I was 20 at the time. From this vantage point I guess club kids seem like children. Christ, I'm not even 35 yet... *hobbles off on cane*

i have never met micheal but i saw the movie and absolutly became facinated with the whole club kid scene. (call me sick and twisted) and i love james st james. teh idae, the whole philosophy of the scene was intriging. people doin there own thing and having a great time. i cant say they werent bothering anyone i mean hello the whole mcdonalds and subway thing...but damn they had a good time ya know. i would have loved to have been alive at that time but being only sixteen i was a kid. i would also like to meet micheal. i am aware he killed someone and all but i think he is a genius. in a sense. i dont think hes a bad person. drugs can mess a person up so bad and give them a false perception of things, and you just go and do what ever comes to mind at first. i think had he not been a drug addict Angel would still be alive.

look at this myspace profile. how's the club scene in granite city, IL? takes some kind of cajones + lack of a moral compass to post that right below pdf.

I hope if I'm ever murdered, people judge my worth based on a film written by a friend sympathetic to the murderer. What a douche.
