As I'm sitting here cataloging 1000's cd's at the radio station, I've been noticing there's a lot of releases on Shimmy Disc I seem to know nothing about. Kuvun Huuto?? Anyone, anyone??

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 10 August 2002 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not including all those Krammer/ King Missle/ Bongwater releases that haven'y seemed to ,ahem, age gracefully. What should I check out??

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 10 August 2002 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Fred Lane is awesome.

2. the first Boredoms and Ruins LPs were on Shimmy.

3. Jad Fair & Kramer's Roll Out The Barrel is still good, 4. 4. Kramer's production and tape usage suiting Fair well.

5. All the Shockabilly Lps with Eugene Chadbourne

6. The Velvet Monkeys compilation.
7. When People Were Shorter And Lived Near The Water (especially the Bobby lp.

8. The Tinklers (home made instruments, fractured faux-folk

i heard a king missile song on the radio the other day and it was funny. not sooper funny, but funny.

ron (ron), Saturday, 10 August 2002 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that's kind of the Kramer/Shimmy problem -- a lot novelty records that dont stand the test of time. To the "Good" list I would also add Men & Volts, who put out 2 LPs on Shimmy.

jack cole, Saturday, 10 August 2002 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The first three Lida Husik albums (Bozo, Your Bag, Return of Red Emma) are all on Shimmy-Disc, and are all very good to great. Her early stuff is incredibly overlooked.

mike, Sunday, 11 August 2002 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'll second that. Great albums all. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 August 2002 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

TOO MUCH SLEEP by Bongwater's a keeper, still sounds great, as off....this very morning. Thanks for getting me thinking of it. Lots of other Shimmy Disc releases are badly underproduced and seemingly not very well planned or executed.

Isn't there a Penn and Teller band on Shimmy Disc? Coinsidence??
I'll have to look for those Lida Husik, Tinklers and Men & Volts albums. I have to be in the mood for Shockabilly. Other stuff I've heard from Lida is pretty ace. I know I've heard a song or two from The Tinklers and Men & Volts. The Fred Lane, Ruins and Boredoms LPs have been stolen. If I find the thief I'm going to de-genitalize them.

i heard a king missile song on the radio the other day and it was funny. not sooper funny, but funny.

When "Detachable Penis" came out, I used to get tons of calls from druknen idiots screaming at me to play it or they'd come down to the station and beat me up.

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 11 August 2002 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Uncle Wiggly! Uncle Wiggly! Uncle Wiggly!

John Darnielle, Sunday, 11 August 2002 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, and how could i forget fly ashtray? and I have to admit that first 3 Dogbowl albums entertained me for a brief while (though definitely not of long lasting classic stature) -- especially flan, the companion record to the novel Dogbowl wrote. also a disclaimer concerning wpwsalntw -- i may be prejudiced since i put out a record with kim rancourt, david rick and jad fair.

on second thought, screw it -- Shimmy Disc is a classic label (the first time around -- discounting its acidic Knitting Factory revival in the late 90's).

jack cole, Monday, 12 August 2002 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Damon & Naomi's More Sad Hits.

Btw, Has anyone else heard Kramer playing jazz guitar? I saw him in this tiny club with Dogbowl, playing duets...really unexpected.

Jez, Monday, 12 August 2002 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I danced beside Kramer at an indie disco in Edinburgh once. Lots of arm waving going on as i remember

Leigh, Monday, 12 August 2002 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the first Boredoms and Ruins LPs were on Shimmy

I heard a nasty rumor that said those bands saw no money from these CDs.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 12 August 2002 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

kramer is notorious for his "business dealings."

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 12 August 2002 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That may have something to do with the whopping lawsuit slapped on him by his former Bongwater bandmate..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 August 2002 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I always wondered what the triple-LP Kramer solo album "The Guilt Trip" was like. Does Kramer still produce? The last thing I saw with his name as the producer was the second D&N album..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 August 2002 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that's part of it -- but his dealings with many of the artists were questionable -- not just the band he was in. i hear he's selling real estate now.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 14 August 2002 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Somehow I can't imagine buying a house from Kramer.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 August 2002 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i imagine the shimmy-disk label to be run by kramer off "Seinfeld"

duane, Friday, 16 August 2002 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, Kramer a la shimmy is so opposite Kramer a la seinfeld its funny. think uptight chronic weed smoker with aloof snob attitude. that said, kramer has done some good stuff -- there are nuggets to be found amongst the dross. for example, his song at the end of roll out the barrel always amuses and its a nice sonic construction too.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 17 August 2002 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It should be fairly obvious that I thought the Uncle Wiggly and Fly Ashtray records on Shimmy were magnificent (since I've put out subsequent albums by both bands)... also, that first Boredoms disc is a keeper for sure, and the first two Tinklers albums are worth hearing ("Mom Cooks Inside, Dad Cooks Outside"...).

And Shimmy subsidiary Kokopop put out Nothing Painted Blue's excellent _Power Trips Down Lover's Lane_ album and "Swivelchair" single. Remember how Kokopop was going to put out a single every week? That didn't last long...

(cough) Chia Pet (cough).

Douglas, Saturday, 17 August 2002 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny you should mention those NPB releases, Douglas, I was just listening to the album last week. And "Swivelchair" was, indeed, a joy. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 August 2002 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Kokopop did some great singles - the Lotion singles are among their best work, and the Aenone and Saturn V singles are worth seeking out..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 18 August 2002 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I think a good bit of King Missile's stuff is still funny after a decade or so, especially the _Fluting on the Hump_ EP and about half of _They_ and _Mystical Shit_. Dogbowl screaming "E-jac-u-LAAAA-TION!" never fails to crack me up.

Dogbowl put out some good albums, in particular _Flan_ (an apocalyptic concept album with accompanying novel) and _Cyclops Nuclear Submarine Captain_; I usually have no big complaints regarding Kramer's production style, but for some reason, the way he records Dogbowl always seems a bit flat and muddy.

Search: _Goya_ by Grenadine (joint release by S-D, TeenBeat, and Simple Machines - indie enough for ya?)
Shockabilly's first two albums (compiled on _The Ghost of Shockabilly_), esp. the mind-blowing covers of "Bluegrass Breakdown" and "Eight Miles High." At a Eugene Chadbourne show, if someone in the audience requests "Free Bird," he will play it. Someone told me about a show where he brought his young daughter along, and she sang along to "Nazi Punks Fuck Off."
In small doses, the Mabuses' s/t album.
Bongwater, pre-_The Big Sell-Out_.

Destroy: not indexing the Boredoms CD into individual tracks.
Kramer's voice.

Ernest P., Monday, 19 August 2002 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Fred Lane, seconded thirded and fourthed! Sooooo good!

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 19 August 2002 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think anyone's mentioned "Dude" by False Front ---- if you can find it, get it. It's a joyfully twisted, snarling monster of a record. The Rebby Sharp album was great, too. And "Real Men" by Kramer and John S. Hall of course!

Enid Roach (Enid Roach), Monday, 19 August 2002 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Kramer's remix of Unrest's "Yes She Is My Skinhead Girl," his production on their Malcolm X Park, and on Low's first album--these are obscuro-rock classics at their most accessible. Bongwater age badly because they're comedy albums. I could never figure out why/how Ann Magnuson became a mini-industry. Well, maybe I can. "His Old Look" and "Rental Car" stand up, though.

Speaking of real estate, Ann was last seen in The Panic Room playing a broker named Lydia Lunch.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Kramer's mix of "Skinhead Girl" is so much better than the one on "Imperial". I was deeply upset when Low stopped working with him, but maybe it wasn't their choice...

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

UNCLE WIGGLY! MABUSES! EGOMANIACS!

donut bitch, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

Mabuses, yes -- who have just released their first new album in a dog's age. And very good it is!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

great moments in WTF?!?! from Kramers wiki

Kramer worked for the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) from 2004 until February, 2006. His main job was to manage the JREF One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge, which offered a million dollar prize to anyone who could demonstrate paranormal ability; the money remains unawarded.

and because no one will, i'd like to declare my undying love for "Potted Meat Spread" by Spongehead.

zappi, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't Ween's "The Pod" come out on Shimmy Disc?

dlp9001, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

It did indeed. My copy is the Shimmy-Disc one.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

i still have the tape, i think. i really did like that kramer/jad fair album way back when. kramer's production sounded so right in that instance.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

Should I give Shimmy Disc another try when I gets my next check?
