"Prog"? "Fusion"? "Madchester"? "Grindcore"? "No Wave"?
I'm going with "Yacht Rock"....
― Lee626, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)
"Yacht Rock" is the name of an underground series made years after the genre had its heyday, so I am not sure if it can even be considered the name of a musical genre. In the series itself, it is constantly being referred to as "smooth music", which is actually quite descriptive.
I sort of agree regarding prog, because the most well-known progressive bands were more regressive in that they took at lot of influence from classical music. Not that there was anything wrong with that, but I prefer to use the term Symphonic Rock, which to me describes much better what the genre is all about.
Glam Rock was also pretty much stupid considering it didn't come close to describing the actual music at all.
― You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)
I'll be the first to say "IDM".
Not because it assumes that other dance music is "stupid", or that you can't actually dance to most of it. But mostly because it sounds like a manufacturer of computer chips.

I can agree with those.
Emo because it is more of a lifestyle than a musical genre (I mean, My Chemical Romance are basically pop punk aren't they?)In the case of twee because it is being used to describe a musical genre that isn't actually particularly twee. Might have worked with psych pop or chamber pop, but not with a sort of rather low-fi oriented indie.

"rhythm and blues" is a great name in the way it rolls off the tongue and kinda sort vaguely sounds like what it is it's describing. but if you look at it closely, the words don't really make sense together. rhythm ... and ... blues? that's kind of like saying "melody and pop" or something.
i have no idea of the etymology besides the fact that jerry wexler came up with it, and the first couple pages of google results don't have much to offer by way of explanation. but i assume it initially was an umbrella phrase to encompass two or more things: blues music and whatever "rhythm" music might have meant at the time. but over time i imagine it fused itself into a single thing that now, strangely, doesn't cover all "blues" music.
i'm probably missing something here, but it's always been just a little bit funny to me.

so therefore, since i don't understand it, it's annoying!

Wasn't R&B, in its original 40s/50s form, the blues with more empasis on the rhythm section? In which case it makes complete sense as a description of the genre it was originally meant to describe back then.

Alternative rock was an OK term to begin with, but it started to show weaknesses as a genre term when the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden started having huge hits, and became completely pointless once acts like Dave Matthews Band, Hootie & The Blowfish, Counting Crows, Live, Creed and Nickelback were classified as alternative rock.

It seems like there has been a switch to using the term "Heritage" for the wide world of folk and indigenous non-western pop. At least thats how the section is now labelled at the local music shop (but that might just be a Southwestern thing because it seems weird to call mariachi band stuff 'world' music here).
