Amazingly, this hasn't been done. I will begin with the near-unbeatable opening statement of Dodheimsgard's 666 International...

dark side of the goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 11 November 2010 12:57 (fifteen years ago)

haha there's a subtle difference though - I considered bumping that thread but this is for fantastic opening blasts that don't necessarily presage a great album

what about albums that start with silence and you start twisting the volume knobs maybe something might be wrong and THEN it kicks in.

grr.

OXbow - "Fuckfest"

The run-in groove is wonderful.

Mark G, Thursday, 11 November 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

Obvious choice, but I'd go for the, um, a cappella opening of Led Zeppelin IV. (Actually there's a bit of guitar first, and it probably exceeds five seconds.)

clemenza, Thursday, 11 November 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

Godflesh - Godflesh (look, Earache re-released it as an album, ok?), "Avalanche Master Song"

First 5-6 seconds.

I was going to say Pet Sounds but it's at six seconds when the drum comes in and that's when it gets amazing. Never Too Much by Luther Vandross would be my choice.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 21 January 2013 11:17 (thirteen years ago)

The echoing guitar riff of "Welcome To The Jungle" on Appetite For Destruction.

The synth-and-drum blast of "Tom Sawyer" from Rush's Moving Pictures telling Rush fans they're not in Kansas anymore and a call to arms for future deejays.

The "bass" intro to "Seven Nation Army" from Elephant by the White Stripes.

The boogie of the intro to "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" encapsulates AC/DC in five seconds at least as good as any five second span of their career.

"Blitzkrieg Bop" by The Ramones. Same as above but even better.

Lemmy's thrashing bass on "Ace Of Spades" might be the best five seconds of anything, really.

The first five seconds of "Sailin' On" already has the drums count in, the band start and HR's "You don't want me anymore," a great introduction on the ROAR tape.
