Sophie B. Hawkins - "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" - Classic or Dud?

"If I was your girl, believe me/I'd turn on the Rolling Stones," she intones over "When The Levee Breaks" drums. Meanwhile Kelly and Dylan from "90210" cuddle on a beach. A ridiculous, ludicrous epic -- the summer song of '92.

What say you?

Classic. My opinion is 100% nostalgia. Oh, fashionable flannel

When I reviewed Kogan's book, I noted his Sophie love.

The most alarming thing about that video isn't her outfit, but her dancing.

Interpretative dance has a lot to answer for. And her being upside down all the time, wtf

Nah, I prefer 'As I Lay Me Down' and the "I love tacos" mondegreen.

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Saturday, 13 November 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

Loved this song. Strangely she became a one-hit wonder, as she seemed at the time very much somebody who'd have more to offer.

except for that other hit she had, you're totally right

I remember there were two female newcomers that autumn that I had really faith in, but both proved to be very shortlasting. The other one being Tasmin Archer, who released a great debut album, but other than "Sleeping Satellite" only had a handful of minor hits.

Not sure about the "tonight I'll be your mother" line. A little creepy.

DAAAMN!!!

This randomly came on last night and I simply had to repeat it. I hadn't given it a serious listen since I was about 11 or 12 years old. It remains a total classic. I had the cassette single and was obsessed with it from the moment I heard it the radio. Her vocal performance with those drums is still sizzle city. Such a perfectly written hit! I had just started learning lyrical/modern dance in '92, and this record seemed like the epitome of "feeling it." MTV looks even more ridiculous nowadays for banning the original video.

Chantilly Bass, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:59 (six years ago)

Sizzle city!

"Damn" is a pretty rough word. "Zounds" upthread is a lot more dignified, and gives me all sorts of fine alternate exclamatory titles that Sophie could've used if she'd not wanted to ruffle so many feathers with her explicit wantonness.

Dang! Sure wish I was your lover!
Gosh! Would really be neat if I was your lover!
Golly! What a treat it would be to be your lover!
Shoot! I don't suppose anything could be more swell than being your lover!
Gadzooks! How my nether regions do ache for your sweet embrace and loving touch!
Uff da! Certainly couldn't possibly overstate my desire to engage in sexual intercourse with you!
Holy cow! The feeling of pleasure I would receive from being your love-making partner would be tremendous!
Whoa mama! I reckon I'd never ever want to stop making love to you provided of course I was allowed the opportunity to begin in the first place!

amazing song that's never aged, which I'll always associate with 90210 and Kelly + Dylan

Lucky! I would have forced my parents to take me if given the chance to see her in the 90s.
