Mark G, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

I think Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?" qualifies for this, though that song is more a celebration than a resignation to me.

Tryng to think of Mark Eitzel songs that aren't about these subjects.

let's all go down the strand.....galifianaaakis (MaresNest), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

Joni Mitchell. Not so much specifically about settling for second best relationship-wise, but w/r/t having to accept the fact that life always falls short of yr expectations romantically and otherwise. You could almost say that resignation is her best theme:

"The Last Time I Saw Richard"
"The Boho Dance"
"Song For Sharon"
"Refuge of the Roads"
"Come In From The Cold"

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

Jagger seems to be all about celebrating the beauty of compromise. not much room for resignation of course

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

"America Drinks and Goes Home"

'Just like I said, there's no regrets!'

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

Possibly my favorite song of all time:

"If You Don't Want to (I Don't Mind)" by Pearls Before Swine

Can you keep up? (Cheetah), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

I Didn't Mean To Turn You On?

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 03:06 (fifteen years ago)

Good one, Tim F--well put

iago g., Wednesday, 17 November 2010 03:25 (fifteen years ago)

Cilla Black - I've Been Wrong Before

Not really the thread for this, but you're otm about that and it's very much why I find Mitchell so distasteful. To me, her constant resignations and disappointments with life come across whiny and very haughty.

Both Sides Now is kind of wonderful, I admit

Cunga, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

haha that's exactly why I love Joni - guess I'm pretty whiny myself

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 18 November 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

"I Quit" - Bros.

Well, it's a form of Resignation.

Mark G, Thursday, 18 November 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

Cunga the songs I listed are more eloquent than whiny. Mostly she lambasts herself for having been naive and demanding. "come in from the cold" is particularly good on this point.

Tim F, Thursday, 18 November 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Backstreets (and many others) - Bruce

iago g., Friday, 19 November 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

The Who - "However Much I Booze"

Son of Sisyphus of Reaganing (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 19 November 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

This is my least favorite Depeche Mode album fwiw.

I'll give them a listen. It's been ages since I gave her my attention. With Joni I think it's like Morrissey, where either you can relate to it or you're sort of like "oh, lighten up"

Cunga, Friday, 19 November 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

I should note that I do get what you mean with her and I would never seek to defend, say, "Sex Kills" on the same basis.

Tim F, Friday, 19 November 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe not about compromise as such, but I reckon "Jack & Diane" is about the king of resignation songs ("life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone")...of course, one could read this as a protest song, inasmuch as Johnny Cougar notes that it is THEY who say the aforementioned lines, and what do THEY really know?

henry s, Friday, 19 November 2010 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

"Some Other Time" (maybe the Tony Bennett version w/ Bill Evans).

"Mama, You Been on My Mind" - Bob Dylan

Mark, Friday, 19 November 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

The Featuring Birds album by Quasi is loaded with these.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 19 November 2010 04:40 (fifteen years ago)

This is my least favorite Depeche Mode album fwiw.
