best uk garage compilations?

hey, i know this has probably been discussed before, but what are some essential 2-step comps (or albums)? all i've got are both Sound of the Pirates comps, which i enjoy immensely. i'm trying to get a good feel for the scene, but it seems rather hard seeing as how it's tiny-nonexistent in the States and also evolving at a really fast rate.

also, is it just me, or has uk garage blown up way more than even jungle in its heyday? i mean, jungle took one dip into the underworld and never really climbed back out, but this stuff seems to be straddling the mainstream-underground line pretty well with all the MC bizness and, uh, Craig David.

ryan, Sunday, 18 August 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a really great 2-disc set called "the best garage anthems...ever", which i copied from a friend and have never seen since. it's got 28 songs (or therabouts), unmixed, pretty much all the massive tunes from 98-00 ("destiny," "neighborhood", "rewind", "moving too fast", "bound 4 da reload", whitney boots, "freak like me", "flowers", "little bit of luck" etc.) it does tend towards the poppier, soppier end of the spectrum, but there's not a duff track and it's one of the best comps of any genre i own. if you see it (the title might be somewhat diferent), buy on sight. also, the aya napa 2001 comp is probably the best garage mix i've ever heard, there was a great freebie given away on the cover of mixmag a few years ago which occasionally crops up in the used bins... i've never run across a really bad uk garage comp, but a lot of mediocre ones. avoid anything with the artful dodger's name on it, because they tend to be horribly overpriced, everywhere (in the dance import sections of hmv and tower at least), and really mediocre.

Jess Harvell (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 18 August 2002 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

ha! i bought an artful dodger presents... (although its ambiguous who actually mixed the cd) cd from a bargain bin for 9 australian dollars (that's about 8 cents us) and it has some really good songs on it, my favourite being >>united groove collective featuring shelly's 'glad you came to me' (wideboys nasty mix int edit)<<. there is, however, far too much of robbie craig's warbling on it, because he was the artful dodger's label's in-house singer. erk. craig david's good though. the wideboys remix of re-rewind is a big disjointed but the good bits are really good.

because it was so cheap i bought a copy for a friend and we refer to it as 'craigness'.

anyway, sorry, i'm not really bringing anything to this thread because like ryan all i have (not including craigness) is 'sound of the pirates'... i'll be interested to see how this thread turns out

You may want to take a look at the "Shake It Up!" compilation. It's got one disc of R&B-type 2-step and one disc of darker, bassier things with MCing over that. Oh and a live disc from the Ayia Napa club of the same name. I'd say it's not as good as the Sound of the Pirates but you can get it in the States (It's also relatively cheap).

I've also had pretty good luck with the DJ Luck and MC Neat compilations. If you can find it, "Garage Vibes" has a pretty good set of older tunes from 98-99, I think, and some overcompiled stuff like Doom's Night and Spin Spin Sugar.

And finally, yes, the Artful Dodger 2001 set is wretched. It looks like it should be fantastic but I've never made it through either disc. Dunno why.

vahid, Sunday, 18 August 2002 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the problem with all these compialtions is that they have to make money, so 50% of the tracks appear on every single compilation, eg 21 seconds etc. but i think 'real garage' (on the misery's label) is ok but old. maybe the heartless crew comp (cant remem, ber the name) is ok..or the so solid one? -'fuck off' or something. theres a bingo beats one for strictly breakbeaty stuff. the blackmarket ('2-step') ones are ok.

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 18 August 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks :)

what's the exact title of that Ayia Napa comp? i've seen a few discs with that name attached. i forget that i also have an Artful Dodger mix (rewind) that i got on promo, and it's alright if a tad inane.

how's the Ms. Dynamite album? she is off the hook. i've also heard there's going to be a Horsepower Productions album this year ... i've never heard anything by them; i'm just excited because they're on Turn U On, i.e. Nico approved.

ryan, Sunday, 18 August 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

SEARCH: BOTH Ministry of Sound Ayia Napa comps from 2000 and 2001. They're black and gold, the first is mixed by Shanks & Bigfoot (! - but seriously the album aside they are fucking fantastic producers, what's happened to them eh?) and the second by Masterstepz. Both peerless and pivotal.

SEARCH: Pure Garage 3 - some duff tracks but some oh my god that's amazing tracks too. Most obviously David Howard's "U & I", which somehow combines a 2-step beat, military snares and what sounds like a bouncing marble into one mindblowing rhythm.

SEARCH: the "Unlocked" Muzik mag comp released late 2000 with fantastic 'Sound of the Pirates'-style tracks from Locked On. Much better than the similar somewhat drab Masterstepz-mixed Mixmag release from about the same time.

SEARCH: So Solid Crew's "Fuck It" mix - a bit exhaustingly, strangely, but I enjoy it more each time I listen to it.

DESTROY: Pure Garage 4 - oddly depressing, despite an abundance of great tracks.

EH: Ms Dynamite's album - it's R&B you know. But "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee", "It Takes More" and "Krazy Krush" are all good.

GIVE IT TO ME NOW: the Horsepower Productions album.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 19 August 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I'm really into that Dy-Na-Mi-Tee song, it's very good, didn't like It Takes More much.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 19 August 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps not as good as the SSC comp, but the fairly recent Pay As U Go Cartel one is also great: a bit darker and more breakbeaty and less inclined to rely on the classics than most of them (although "Know We" and "Dilemma" are both there), there's also extremely! silly! rapping! from Wiley and God's Gift on the first CD.

Chris Houghton, Monday, 19 August 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Tim - I reckon the So Solid mix was the best one of the last 12 months.

For older stuff, there is a new comp called The Way it Was with Gabrielle (sp?), Alabama Blues, etc... Amazon uk have is for 8.99 i think

Tim, do you reckon the horespower productions album will be new tracks or a comp of older stuff?

Robin Goad, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Locked On Vol 3 is still my fave

Ben Williams, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Does the Stanton Warriors mix CD count? Because that's fucking BLINDING.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

the Stanton Sessions isn't entirely 2step. ther's a fair bit of straighter breakbeat material on there, as well as an old MAW track. fucking blinding, though, yes :)

ryan, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

ms dynamite- ramp is super yum

bob zemko, Thursday, 22 August 2002 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

u bet ur sweet ass tho dy na mi tee is just plain silly.

naked as sin, Thursday, 22 August 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tim, do you reckon the horespower productions album will be new tracks or a comp of older stuff?"

There's at least *some* new stuff. Considering the way these things tend to work with these mad-prolific underground producers I reckon it'll be almost entirely new (the one track I've heard - "Classic Delux" - was great, sort of like a rough Jamaican take on Farben).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 22 August 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...

"Crews Control - MCs inside the Ride".

Covers most of the darker stuff discussed on ILM (Horsepower, Oxide+Neutrino, Pay as U Go). Outrageously expensive.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 November 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to know what that heartless crew thing's like - tracklisting makes it look like more of a modern pirate-oriented urban sound, garage meets jungle (mainly jump-up hence geared towards the dance) meets hip hop. pretty intriguing, bit like wandering around the systems at Carnival, and a lot like the clubs in London I wouldn't be allowed into coz i'm too bloody scruffy.

Anyone got it?

nebbesh, Monday, 4 November 2002 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I second "Crews Control". If you want Garage qua "Garage is UK rap"
then it's got a taster of most of the crews I've heard of recently. And jolly fun to listen to, too.

phil jones (interstar), Monday, 4 November 2002 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
hey, any good new comps? thinking of importing (the still outrageously-priced) "F**k It" & "Crews Control" - anything in a similar vein/more "relevant" turn up recently?

& for the record, "Silk Cuts In Session" is probably one of my favourites to listen to - "Up Middle Finger", "Oi!", "Booo!", "'Course Bruv", remixes of "Flowers", "Young, Fresh, & New", "Gotta Get Through This", etc etc. Turning up quite a bit in the cheap bins now; probably only released in NZ. I also have quite a lot of really cheap compilations whose titles usually involve/invoke Ayia Napa - great stuff.

EssKay (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
haha I forgotten I'd asked this & was about to post something v.similar! although I've now obtained "Crews Control". anything more recent than "Garage Rap Volume 1"?

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

six months pass...
Any more?

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
ok. please tell me: was the pay as u go compilation any good? how about the heartless crew mix cd?? i found these on sale in a local clearance bin for $9.99 apiece and i'm wondering if they're worth it.

specifically, i am wondering how much mc'ing is on these discs. lots = good.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 7 July 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

also: while discogs is down - tell me who is mikey bennett? i seem to remmeber an ultimate d'n'b comp that was way faster than its contemporaries and i just picked up speed garage mania for a buck and its all his productions...is he like the production music cash in or what?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

bump

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

What's on the PAUG comp? I found Crews Control and Garage Rap Vol 1 in my local Tower clearance bin. Both are totally worth (the latter is completely underrated greatness.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Oooh good timing. I got a compilation at Dr. Wax the other day for $2.99!!! OK so it probably sucks its called:

UK ID - Garage Sounds for a New Millennium

2. Kallulu feat. Betu Dasilva - Mama Kudala
3. Zoo Tribe - Get Up
4. BDI - Thinking About You

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Wow I totally screwed that up. Either way, yeah I've seen that comp too. It's deceptively marketed! There are only one or two PAUG songs even on there!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

pre-millennial matt "jam" lamont mix tapes!

If you can find these they are a great starting point to get a feel for the whole post millennial garage/grime scene. Nice mixture of 4 to the floor beats and early 2step stuff. Good bit of history.

Next time Im at my mothers house Im going to dig for them in my box of mixtapes. If I can find them I will digitize and post em up.

Justin Baum (prosume), Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

please do!

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I had that UK ID cd a long time ago and really liked it, until it was stolen along with a whole binder of cd's. Anyway, it's really good, I think. 'lovebug' is great.

tylero (tylero), Thursday, 7 July 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Wow I totally screwed that up. Either way, yeah I've seen that comp too. It's deceptively marketed! There are only one or two PAUG songs even on there!

oh shit. wiley & god's gift are all over the first disc. like over every single track. wiley over dj narrows "saved soul" is just silly. this is just great - my only complaint is no "cum cakes". now why don't i have more interest in grime? i guess it's just not that much fun compared to UKG.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 8 July 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Hey Vahid have you heard the early Wiley track "Dirty Cash"?? You would love it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 8 July 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Haha see Vahid it is totally deceptive cuz I never would have guessed that from the tracklist!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I still bust out Tuff Jams - Speed Garage: The Underground Sound Of London now & again.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I really miss dance music.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

WELL PUT.

i had a dream last night i found a detroit techno album i'd never heard before! it was called ... ok i forget already what it was called but the cover was a photo of the moonscape with a green filter, and it was a collaboration between dego and ... someone from detroit. also several of the tracks had morgan geist co-production. i really miss finding new detroit techno.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I listened to Tuff Jam's Underground Frequencies discs A LOT (vols 1 and 2).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and I found Locked On Vol. 1 for about $3 US a couple of months ago. Did I mention I was an absolute fiend for this stuff when it was new?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 8 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

"now why don't i have more interest in grime? i guess it's just not that much fun compared to UKG."

exactly

lethalfizzle, Friday, 8 July 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

uh oh, there's already a lethal dizzle! (me) Dont confuse the people.

this needs to exist!!

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 8 July 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

i secretly feel the same way about grime, btw. different world now though.

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 8 July 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

pow! there can be (more than) only one!

i not so secretly feel that way as strongo about grime. i miss the more fire and pay as u go days really. the way the music sounds today, its a lot more samey musically, and now it sounds a lot more indebted to american hip hop sounds, what with all those synths and everything. yes, it doesnt sound LIKE american hip hop exactly, but you can still hear it. i like those old garagey sounds!

lethalfizzle, Friday, 8 July 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

So I ordered this Baltimore Club compilation and it had this remix of Teedra Moses which I think anyone who still likes slightly sped up vocals will enjoy:

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Warning: it's quite pretty and sentimental!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I told Adam it's like a proto-2-step and rapless "So Sure".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

what does baltimore club stuff sound like? this teedra track?

lethalfizzle, Friday, 8 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

No, mostly similar to ghetto tech and ghetto/booty house.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I plucked this track out because it reminded me of so much circa '99-'00 garage stuff.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

anyone care to reccomend some good baltimore club or ghetto tech or ghetto/booty house comps???

I've never heard a truly bad UKG comp!

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Spencer - this is really nice! Reminds me of Gabrielle's Sunshine in the vocal melody.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

I also recentyl said to Alex that 2Step might still be better than grime, but he mocked, MOCKED me! With mockery!

Maybe we need a 2step vs grime thread?

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Haha I mocked you cuz you are fickle! Also I've never like 2step as much as grime or jungle.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

xpost, Tantrum, have you heard the Wookie Main Mix of that track?

Also, can anyone ID that Teedra Moses Mix?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

you cuz you are fickle

I KNOW I'm fickle!

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah well prepare to be mocked for it!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

We should CELEBRATE it! With hosannas! HOSANNAS!

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

xpost to Spencer - What, of Sunshine? Probably, I think I at one point DLed all the club mixes of Gabrielle's stuff. Wookie is/was amazing... memories of performing "Battle" with Sassa'le DJing a few years back... ahhhhhhhh.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

It's an amazing mix, I might try to YSI later.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

My favourite 2step mix is the Dreem Teem Essential Mix from 2000 (live in Ayia Napa) because a) you get all the MC'ing and crowd response that those CD comps don't have and b) the tracklist is 100% classic.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 8 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

i will honestly paypal people for some of these tapes.
