Whether they made a bad record, a good record that flopped, an obnoxious video/tweet/interview/concert appearance, etc, who fell the furthest this year?

River Cuomo has taken Weezer from 'sellout' territory to 'WTF'. Although "Raditude" was released in 2009, so maybe the drop hasn't been as big as i thought...

Rivers

I'm surprised nobody's saying MIA. She'll come back, but 2010 was definitely not her best year.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 18 November 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

Weezer was already WTF.

that simply raises the question: who's the biggest dick on that show, matt or meredith?

MIA's "artistic standing" had a rough 2010 for sure.

From an indie standpoint, Abe Vigoda and Midlake did not have a good year.

the answer is kinda nobody, because it's so hard for anybody to fail big anymore. lots of people's careers slowly falter when people get bored or disinterested, but who's the last person who kind of actively pissed people off with a record and then faced consequences for it? so many people talked about that MGMT record being a big letdown at first but it ended up being pretty well reviewed and they still seem pretty popular. Liz Phair's last record was kind of a 'fiasco' but it felt like kind of one by design and really just gave a lot of people who already hated her a new talking point. when's the last time any big publication, Rolling Stone or Pitchfork or whatever, gave a really mean review to an anticipated record and it kind of helped turn the tide of public opinion against them? feels like that kind of thing used to happen a lot more often, everyone's much more polite now.

Interpol?

MarkoP, Friday, 19 November 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Lil Wayne? I mean hes been in prison for most of the year, but he did release Rebirth.

MIA

mia for sure

christina aguilera's commercial relevance has also plummeted

I love MIA as much as I ever did.

MIA's 2010 album was sure way better than the Hold Steady's -- has anybody mentioned them yet?

xhuxk, Friday, 19 November 2010 01:48 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that's more of a precipitous decline.

mia's album is good and will be revised upwards in the inevitable reconsideration round. but i guess in terms of current standing as defined by metacritic or whatever, she's the best candidate.

Yes, Trufflegate and the surrounding articles did alot to damage her cred.

what about the whole any publicity is good publicity thing? arular came out five years ago and people are still talking about her. five years can be a long time in popworld.

scott seward, Friday, 19 November 2010 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

i've been letdown by most of the acts/music i love this year. mia, xenomania (uk chartpop as a whole has been dire compared to a few years ago), mgmt, aeroplane, gorillaz, hot chip, mystery jets, nypc, etc. all had 2 good tracks, tops.

other than lcd soundsystem and chromeo most the big acts i love have disappointed with their comeback or debut albums. actually liked the goldfrapp album a lot too, but the public at large clearly didn't.

Wayne's a great example of what i'm talking about. everyone knows Rebirth is dogshit but it still sold pretty well and 95% of his audience still seems to like him as much as they did in 2008 and is anticipating Carter 4
