I found it on ILM

Whats your favourite out of all the tunes you may have discovered by mentions in ILM?

Despite my opinion that reading critisism gives a worse buyers guide result than random purchases - I do think dialog focussed writing can be an efficient way of finding good music.

It may work differently for different folks, but I would like to hear what tunes they've discovered - and what it was about the conversation on ILM that gave the alert that it was worthy of attention.

Susan Cadogan - Hurts so Good.

Was it Dr C's best singles thread that this came up? Its kind of funny my own obsession with 70s lovers rock didn't cause me to stumble over it before, but it hadn't and it was described in a way that pressed everyone of my buttons, but its more than the genre keywords that initially grabbed my lovers rock radar alert. Its a supreme pop song (interestingly she later worked with SAW). I think from now on when people come to visit me I will ask them if they like this, and if they don't they wont get in the house.

Sandy Blair, Sunday, 18 August 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

ohmygod, loads! partly because of specific threads i started wanting information and stuff. lets think, this is difficult to remember offhand, and i'm in a rush, so i'll probably have to come back to this

courtney melody ~ bad boy. i don't think this was Tim H, i can't remember who it was now

ennio morricone ~ metti una sera cena. nickdastoor i believe

bump'n'flex ~ promises. ambrose, although that may have been on email rather than on here

quite a few early 80s solar/disco type things, from a number of people, mainly jess and david inglesfield

pickettywitch ~ that same old feeling. robin carmody, but that was from his excellent bubblegum piece, rather than here

romantics ~ talking in your sleep. n*****/nabisco

manual. cant remember, sorry!

damn, i've got to go, i'll be back with the rest!

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 18 August 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure which tune, but ILM really got me into bootlegs, so it'd be something in that general area.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 18 August 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i've only been coming here for about a year but you know what, i can't think of a single song that ILM has turned me on to - how sad! perhaps i should go away....

stirmonster, Sunday, 18 August 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

**Was it Dr C's best singles thread that this came up?**

You betcha.

Dr. C, Sunday, 18 August 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still grateful for ILM pointing me to Taco the Wonder Dog.

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Sunday, 18 August 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

"Uptown Top Ranking"!!!

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Sunday, 18 August 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still waiting on a new & improved filesharing client for m'Mac so I can finally finally hear "Where's Me Jumper" and "The Cars That Go Boom" and a ton of others, mostly the ones whose lyrics were quoted in "most laughable threats ever".

Poppy (poppy), Sunday, 18 August 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

One song that stands out for me is "Dollar Sign" by Sticky featuring Lady Stush, although I must also thank ILM for turning me on to Green Velvet.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 18 August 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The DJ Rupture Minesweeper thing: not only did I hear about it here first, I then went to soulseek, WHICH I HEARD ABOUT HERE FIRST, and got it. Then I did the right thing, I bought it. Thanks ILM!

matt riedl (veal), Sunday, 18 August 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan hates me but it was his mention of the Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache" (plus Matos' echoing of that sentiment) that led me to finally download it. And yeah that extended bongo break is classic but those horns + the EVIL BOOKER T & THE MGS ORGAN really make it for me.

Also: Pitman.

Nate Patrin, Sunday, 18 August 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

fuckloads of songs...if i'm curious about a band or artist,i always (or used to always,as i suppose it is now)use the search greenspun function to see what other people have said about them, and look for a search and destroy or something to see which songs are mentioned most often...

examples of songs i probably wouldn't have got into were it not for ilm include

wu-tang-rules

schneider tm-the light 3000

autechre-silverside (thanks to an email from lee in response to a thread)

aaliyah-are you that somebody,we need a resolution

various new order

jay-z-all of the blueprint

oval-microstoria runtime engine

and that's just after a quick glance at my winamp playlist,i'm sure there are countless others...

on the cd,but this track in particular...
funny that you should mention it...

robin (robin), Sunday, 18 August 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I never bothered buying any My Bloody Valentine albums until I read one of Ned's posts about them. So thank you, Ned. : ) I don't remember which post it was, though... actually, I'd guess that most of the albums that I have from the 80s were bought in part from people here discussing them.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 18 August 2002 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Come on, Lyra, you can't remember which one out of the gazillion MBV/Ned posts? Get with it!

As for me, off the top of my head: "Lisa's Got Hives" by Conway, "Aw Naw" by Nappy Roots, "Danger (High Voltage)" by the Wildbunch, "Addicted to Bass" by Puretone. Thanks Michael D., Jess, Tom (I think), Nathalie. Can't quite remember what they said about the songs--it's not really one conversation, more like I've come to realize over the months of reading their posts that I like a lot of the same stuff. And I'll usually seek out songs they rave about. Not that I don't think they're all fantastic writers...

Anyway, I do that with loads of people on ILM, download whatever they recommend. Or I used to. It's REALLY not the same without Audiogalaxy. What's a Mac user to do?

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 18 August 2002 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

In the few months I have been here on ILM (as opposed to the many, many months I have been reading freakytrigger without getting around to visit these boards), I, thanks to many, especially Tracer I think, rethought my opinions on "Grindin'" by the Clipse. Many, none of whom I remember by name or thread, have mentioned the Modern Lovers, and I just got the first album a week ago and LOVE IT! Thanks, all!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 18 August 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I come here more to hear other people think thru stuff I'm already interest in. It would be easier to turn each other on if there was some kind of file-posting place. [insert joke here]

the STREETS!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 August 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"i'm interest in"? standards here are clearly slipping.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 August 2002 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

loveless (lots of people talk about it besides ned) - jess was the main inspiration for me gettin the sam prekop album, which i really love

ron (ron), Monday, 19 August 2002 03:32 (twenty-three years ago)

jess was the main inspiration for me gettin the sam prekop album, which i really love

Hey, me too. Also, Jess, gareth & TFinney all deserve credit for Low Birth Weight being in my collection, and I love that one as well.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 19 August 2002 03:37 (twenty-three years ago)

andy k - kompakt and related

tim f - horsepower productions, "a hook and a line", a fuckload of other garage tunes i'm forgetting.

tom - the wildbunch, clientele

ronan - plenty of that stadium house he's always going on about that i wouldn't have any chance to hear otherwise

there's a lot of stuff that i already knew about but wouldn't have explored without the enthusiasm or recommendations of ilx (either on board or off): dis plan, mag fields...

as well as re-listening/re-evaluating artists i had previously written off/forgotten about/declared passe in my mind: bowie, the smiths, steely dan, radiohead...

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 August 2002 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

haha did you ever get any of that STADIUM breakbeat I was recommending? I just bought this Ils album and it's pretty sweet, I was all housed out so breaks is a welcome change.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 19 August 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to get Gareth's recommendations but I have no downloading gizmos at the mo' so it's not working.

Michael Bourke has let me know about a good few good house and techno tracks, though that one with the birds in it still remains a mystery.

I knew the Streets cos of the remix on the Stanton Sessions but ILM had a hand in me actually going out and getting the album (copied).

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 19 August 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

So thank you, Ned. : )

Why, you're quite welcome. :-) And yeah, others talk about it too -- but I seem to have a proprietary interest. ;-)

Come on, Lyra, you can't remember which one out of the gazillion MBV/Ned posts? Get with it!

Think of it like Gaudi's cathedral, ever evolving and not quite finished. Actually, DJ Lance Lockarm gave me a new appreciation of "I Only Said" the other day, as you can hear about by going to this particular spot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 August 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't dispute your position as #1 mbv head honcho, ned :-)

ron (ron), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan, which ones specifically (i'll burn you a cd if you like)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't dispute your position as #1 mbv head honcho, ned :-)

Earned with the BLOOD OF MY ENEMIES. Or, um, not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Hardfloor sounded good, but I trust your dance knowhow enough to give you an open brief on the rest if that's ok?????

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

cool, i'll burn you a couple when i go home next

another one i forgot was Andy K's cdr, which introduced me to the fantabuluos This Is My Religion, by Gene Farris, which is like Robert Armani chunky shit, with Minnie Riperton style vox (hmm, maybe less warehousy than Armani, more like the chicagofilterclump, derrick carter or someone).
