don't know if this was already discussed in the taylor thread but there's a hysterically bad review of her album in the new spin that basically is all about kanye and basically insists on songs besides the one obviously about kanye being about him etc.

more magazines -- and by more, i mean every single one -- should've taken vibe's lead & just nixed the review section totally

Before you've even heard Taylor Swift's new album, it's hard to resist imagining that the 20-year-old Queen of Tween is secretly addressing these songs to Kanye West, her onetime awards-show tormentor. But it's even harder to get past that idea after you hear Speak Now, which peaks with a remarkable seven minutes of epic pop-country poetry called "Dear John."

On the surface, Swift is taking an old flame to task with the talky, high-def detail that's turned her into the patron saint of exurban romantic ennui. But then she admits, "I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said run as fast as you can," quoting nearly verbatim a line from West's single "Runaway." And after that she invokes her ex's "dark, twisted games" -- surely a reference to the title of the rapper's latest, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

oh i don't agree w/ that -- spin's is pretty decent most of the time. but even as a non-fan of swift it's incredibly noxious how many people just write about her through the kanye prism (xpost)

especially when writing two paragraphs about the one song that everyone knows is about john mayer

and considering that "Runaway" was debuted at the same event where she debuted a song off her album and her lead single was already out, it's virtually impossible that she was purposefully referencing that song there

i didn't really follow this closely at the time. was swift "tormented" by west's boorish behavior, or did she just laugh it off? i'm not a fan of hers, but she seems too level-headed to be frazzled by the stagecrashing.

I dunno, that line seems pretty similar to the stuff she's saying in songs like "Never Grow Up" and "The Best Day", where they're about herself and she's pretty genuinely into having bigger beds to crawl into.

I strongly suspect that initially it wasn't really about Kanye in total, and she's just shoehorned in a few red alert details to give it a talking point.

Taylor has a slight edge for me as of right now. It's neither of their strongest work, but Taylor's most egregious moments here are Innocent and Never Grow Up, while Kanye's involve reupholstered pussies. So...

(Or, you know, Taylor is still vaguely relatable and human, while Kanye abstracted himself three levels beyond that in the middle of the Glow in the Dark tour.)

To me "Innocent" scans as pure Christian empathy, basically about turning the other cheek and feeling pity for this overgrown child. I see it as straightforward and not condescending.

It's interesting that J0rdan and some dude say upthread that "Innocent" is condescending because she treats a grown-up as an overgrown child.

What I think this misses is that Taylor absolutely idolises childhood - I think in her parlance portraying someone in childlike terms is to play them a huge compliment - i.e. "You're still innocent" should be taken at face value coming from her.
