that happened to me during the 2010 midterm elections. but i still voted for MARCO RUBIO, and here i will vote for KANYE WEST.

kanye and marco are a dream ticket in 2012 imo.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 22 November 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, that would show the obamanation

prolego, Monday, 22 November 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

haven't heard twisted fantasy (it's on its way in the mail), but speak now is exquisite -- one of my favs of the year

ilxor, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

wish there was a "neither" option tbh

don't know if this was already discussed in the taylor thread but there's a hysterically bad review of her album in the new spin that basically is all about kanye and basically insists on songs besides the one obviously about kanye being about him etc.

vodka loko lame (some dude), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

more magazines -- and by more, i mean every single one -- should've taken vibe's lead & just nixed the review section totally

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

Before you've even heard Taylor Swift's new album, it's hard to resist imagining that the 20-year-old Queen of Tween is secretly addressing these songs to Kanye West, her onetime awards-show tormentor. But it's even harder to get past that idea after you hear Speak Now, which peaks with a remarkable seven minutes of epic pop-country poetry called "Dear John."

On the surface, Swift is taking an old flame to task with the talky, high-def detail that's turned her into the patron saint of exurban romantic ennui. But then she admits, "I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said run as fast as you can," quoting nearly verbatim a line from West's single "Runaway." And after that she invokes her ex's "dark, twisted games" -- surely a reference to the title of the rapper's latest, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

holy shit, you are not kidding

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

oh i don't agree w/ that -- spin's is pretty decent most of the time. but even as a non-fan of swift it's incredibly noxious how many people just write about her through the kanye prism (xpost)

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

especially when writing two paragraphs about the one song that everyone knows is about john mayer

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

and considering that "Runaway" was debuted at the same event where she debuted a song off her album and her lead single was already out, it's virtually impossible that she was purposefully referencing that song there

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:29 (fifteen years ago)

stop, all of this logic is offensive to me

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

her onetime awards-show tormentor

i didn't really follow this closely at the time. was swift "tormented" by west's boorish behavior, or did she just laugh it off? i'm not a fan of hers, but she seems too level-headed to be frazzled by the stagecrashing.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

she was kinda shaken up about iirc, although probably not remotely as much as most people like to imagine.

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:37 (fifteen years ago)

She was kinda shaken, but not as remotely bothered as I've been the last twenty-four hours by rockcrit.

look at it, pwn3d, made u look at my peen/vadge (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

she was pretty damn funny about the incident on SNL i remember that

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

well yeah i think she, as anyone would, realized how ridiculous it all was and laughed it off later, but she seemed at least shellshocked the night of the whole thing

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

seems ridiculous to think she'd devote more than one song on speak now to kanye

ilxor, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

actually i honestly think it would be funny and maybe great if she wrote an angry concept album about kanye.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

i wish she had the wit to come back with something cutting and mean and not just "bless your heart, you're an innocent"

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

lol that song is pretty mean imo

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

just because it's massively condescending

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

i wish she had the wit to come back with something cutting and mean and not just "bless your heart, you're an innocent"

uhhh shit ain't exactly "bless your heart" is it??

"wasn't it easier in your lunchbox days? always a bigger bed to crawl into"

i mean the delivery is innocent (HAH!) but that is a fuckin zing & a half

ilxor, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:01 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think it's much of a zing.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

actually i honestly think it would be funny and maybe great if she wrote an angry concept album about kanye.

You're presuming he's worth the effort.

look at it, pwn3d, made u look at my peen/vadge (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

how about instead of that happening, you just try and channel the mind of mikael wood and spare the rest of us

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:04 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think it's much of a zing.

"wasn't life easier when you could just go cry to yr fuckin mom in her bed instead of taking it out on me??"

ilxor, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

oh that's her line? hm.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

use yr imagination!

ilxor, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

ah.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, that line seems pretty similar to the stuff she's saying in songs like "Never Grow Up" and "The Best Day", where they're about herself and she's pretty genuinely into having bigger beds to crawl into.

I said in the taylor thread that I assumed "Innocent" was sung to another woman the first few times I heard it.

I strongly suspect that initially it wasn't really about Kanye in total, and she's just shoehorned in a few red alert details to give it a talking point.

Tim F, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:19 (fifteen years ago)

Taylor has a slight edge for me as of right now. It's neither of their strongest work, but Taylor's most egregious moments here are Innocent and Never Grow Up, while Kanye's involve reupholstered pussies. So...

The SBurbs (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

(Or, you know, Taylor is still vaguely relatable and human, while Kanye abstracted himself three levels beyond that in the middle of the Glow in the Dark tour.)

The SBurbs (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:24 (fifteen years ago)

To me "Innocent" scans as pure Christian empathy, basically about turning the other cheek and feeling pity for this overgrown child. I see it as straightforward and not condescending.

Mark, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:35 (fifteen years ago)

"i pity you, you're so immature" isn't condescending?

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i was gonna say -- treating a grown adult like an overgrown child is like inherently condescending

But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

yup i think this too

lex pretend, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 11:42 (fourteen years ago)

It's interesting that J0rdan and some dude say upthread that "Innocent" is condescending because she treats a grown-up as an overgrown child.

What I think this misses is that Taylor absolutely idolises childhood - I think in her parlance portraying someone in childlike terms is to play them a huge compliment - i.e. "You're still innocent" should be taken at face value coming from her.
