Living Colour - Vivid

One of my favorite albums of childhood. The second CD I ever owned (after Bobby McFerrin's Simple Pleasures) Has some obvious filler on it, but there are definitely some dope tracks to be found beyond the singles. I hear snatches of these songs in my head every day and I don't even own it anymore (apparently...wtf?).

Controversial opinion: Their version of Memories Can't Wait is way better than the original.

Shakey Mo Fee Nané (kkvgz), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

I agree (and I love TH) and that's my vote. 'Time's Up' would be a fun poll, too.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:11 (fifteen years ago)

The Time's Up tour was the first non-chaperoned concert I went to.

ali-baba-boob-job-bomb.jpg (DJP), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

I kinda want to go with Middle Man or Funny Vibe but my heart says What's Your Favorite Color?

And Memories Can't Wait is way better by them than by the Heads.

The Time's Up tour rocked. They were great on a small stage, but looked lost in bigger venues (opening for the Stones, Lollapalooza). Plus Urban Dance Squad opened! Great show all around.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

I'm stuck between "Middle Man" "Open Letter (To a Landlord)" and "Which Way to America". "Which Way" is the one that was stuck in my head this morning.

Vanpire Halend (kkvgz), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

The main riff on Middle Man is undeniable though.

Yeesssss!!!

Vanpire Halend (kkvgz), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

This album has not aged well.

thirdalternative, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

"Glamour Boys" has a solid hook and good harmonies, but the message is repugnant, no? A barely concealed homophobia.

I voted for "Memories Can't Wait" also; I don't think it's a controversial single. "Cult of Personality" deserves better singing, or probably more accurately, singing that I like better. As it is it has too much forced growling. Good song though.

Euler, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

really about "Glamour Boys"? Isn't it a Jagger co-write? I'd be surprised if he'd tolerate homophobia.

Euler, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

ok I guess it's just a Jagger production; but no, I don't hear homophobia. I hear class resentment but I don't think there's anything sexual going on (despite the provocative title, & the odd "I'm fierce" which is the closest I can see to what you're getting at).

Euler, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

I was under the impression that one or more members of Living Colour were gay or bi. The song might address certain poseurs in the gay community, but I don't think it's homophobic.

Vanpire Halend (kkvgz), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

The lyrics to Open Letter (To a Landlord) take mawkish to a new level.

It may be "ironic" but I think part of the problem is how one-dimensional their singer is.

loved them at the time, dread them now. considering i actually like rush alot more now than then i wonder how much of my dread is due to corey glover. 'cult of personality' is such a stupid song. i recall even at the time times up seeming a mess (though yeah, 'solace of you' the one living colour song i actually have and want to listen to lately)(how much better would it be w/ dionne farris or some other early 90s positive singer on it though?). soto otm re: 'glamour boys'. voted 'desperate people' which was a big fave of mine at the time, haven't heard it in twenty years.

i used to think the Memories Can't Wait cover was mind-blowing back then but it has aged so poorly. i listened to it recently and it was hard going.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

Soundtrack to just a weird era that wasn't quite 80s, wasn't quite 90s.

"Memories Can't Wait" was killer, the build-up alone at the end even better than the original.

1987-1989 was an era of it's own, really.

Vanpire Halend (kkvgz), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

I was browsing through On Demands videos from VH-1, separated by categories like "Those Wacky 80s!" and "90s, Whatever", and it was really odd seeing Edie Brickell & New Bohemians sticking out like sore thumbs in the 80s section.

It being your second LP after Bobby McFerrin sums up the time succinctly.

I've been revisiting them a lot lately and I've been a bit heartbroken at how much less I like them now. They were my first concert and my favorite band from ages 11-13 or so.

Broken Hearts, I like the bass solo.

i saw them play at my college a couple years before the debut, they sounded pretty decent live but the stuff i heard on the radio/videos were kinda dire i thought

buzza, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

whoa, had no idea they did that song. kinda cool. weird how much i loved this band when i was 10 or 11, and i seriously can't remember anything off of Vivid except the singles! i was so mad at my mom when she took my older brother to see them at the Hollywood Palladium and said that the show wouldn't be appropriate for a kid my age.

I flipped out when I found out Corey Golver was Judas in a recent production of "Jesus Christ Superstar." I voted for "I Want To Know."

I think I am going to listen to this album while I make dinner, thx ILX!

"open letter." saw them on tour around the time of desert storm, vernon got all political ("no blood for oil!"), and the penn state crowd starting booing him. i felt bad.

2nd album is better, tho still not great. but i ended up interviewing vernon some years later and he seemed like a totally cool, smart, funny, interesting guy. much respect for him.

Not surprised. Reid kicked around the NYC club scene for most of the eighties, wrote a few articles.

Not one vote for Glamour Boys. Didn't see that one coming.

hmm.

Feel bad I couldn't vote for "Middle Man" too.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

I always like to pretend that is a song about the plight of a robot because it sounds kind of like he's saying "Metal Man."
