Hello Ilx hope you are having a wonderful day, I don't ask too many questions but this one is bugging me
Is this a sample of 'Going back to my Roots' by Richie Havens or am I going mad?

That Jeff Mills track is an all-time classic. The Richie Havens one is pretty great too, I wouldn't be surprised if Mills was at least inspired by it. But I think Changes of Life may just use a single piano hit and repitch it up and down to make that riff, so it would be really hard to say if it actually came from the Richie Havens song.

i'd be really surprised if mills hadn't heard "going back to my roots". wasn't it a big disco anthem?

Most likely chord memory on some random rompler, or whatever piano samples shipped with the EPS 16 he was using at the time.
Man I hate that Kink "tribute" to Changes of Life where he jacks the piano riff. Sucks all the energy out of the original and turns it into this plodding generic tech house fluff. Shameful.

he doesn't jack the riff. he just uses the same preset which has been used a ton of times. whatever he did, it certainly DOES have energy as dance floors around the world will testify. one of the tunes of 2010.

are you both talking about kink's 'existence'?
i like that too

It is exactly the same riff, and it's clearly sampled from the opening bars of the Jeff Mills tune. Just transposed up and down every 8 or so bars, much like the Jeff Mills tune. Nothing wrong with this kinda thing obviously, it's been part and parcel of house music since like Denise Motto or something, and admittedly I haven't been to many dance floors worldwide this year, but I just don't get it somehow. It is a great piano sound, whatever it is.

i didn't get it until i played it out and - KABOOM! i have it on good authority that he didn't sample it but who knows?
