I love one song from each, so it's "Good Times" vs. "Paranoid" (just like your question says--good call). Actually, I think I only know two Black Sabbath songs...Anyway, based on that, Chic decisively--and I also like "Le Freak" fine.

I am voting for the option Chic. However, I consider this kind of poll to be an attempt to start unpleasantness and argument and, where I not adopting a more considered approach to I Love Music's "Suggest Ban" system, I would be inclined to click the Suggest Ban button alongside your initial post as I consider this an attempt to generate "drama" rather than provoke serious and enlightening debate.

Ravacious Fortune (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Europe VS America

kinda take issue with this particular reading since neither band seems to typify their respective continents

Shakey OTM. Chic's main influence was Roxy Music, Sabbath were steeped in American rock.

Ha, yeah, I hear that.

It took me a very long time before I could accept Le Freak for what it was, rather than a whole enterprise of very negative childhood associations (something I still struggle with today). Its interesting to consider this in light of how my love of Chic has been made possible by a process of outgrowing the white heterosexual-white-male perspective that I was subject to until somewhat kind of recently (which has an incredibly pervasive influence on taste, but also in what is expected of you, and what is acceptable). While on the other hand, as a very young kid my dad would always play Black Sabbath in the car (which, knowing my dad, seems immensely bizarre), yet I've never had any subsequent desire to listen to them (this experience probably neutralized any exciting potential to be seen in them?).

this is weird cuz while i loved every kind of dance pop as a kid, it took me a long damn time to outgrow my childhood distaste for longhair bong rock: sabbath, deep purple, led zep, cream, hendrix, etc. now that i've spent couple decades growing into the white heterosexual-white-male (don't forget white) perspective, you will take my sabbath only when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

Easily Chic here, although I don't really see any similarities at all. Black Sabbath were not at all the worst hard rock band in the world (actually close to the best), but Chic were geniuses in a lot of ways.

"regressive" is not true.

I love you girls but that music is for radical faeries (Matt P), Thursday, 25 November 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

Love the comparison; too bad Chic didn't put out as many stunning albums as Sabbath, it'd be great if they were true equals album-wise. Both did the same thing, I think: took a certain style down to its bare essential elements, and made each of those elements great (though Sabbath may gain a few points by pioneering their style).

Spectrum, Thursday, 25 November 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

imo Chic are a tight, precisely orchestrated ensemble but I would not say that they strip funk down to its "bare essential elements," at least not to the extent that Sabbath strip metal down to its bare essential elements

pretty hat machine (crüt), Thursday, 25 November 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm more inclined to think of James Brown as pure, stripped-down funk

pretty hat machine (crüt), Thursday, 25 November 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

Well, not really saying "stripped down", but take each aspect of what makes it operate as music (groovy bass, rhythmic guitar, soulful vocals/arrangements), and then make the songs about the interplay of those elements.

Spectrum, Thursday, 25 November 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

disco culture, yes, glam related. disco music, no.

Obese Pony-hating Liberal (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, maybe going from "Roxy Music wz a formative influence on Chic" to "glam fathered disco" is a pretty huge leap...were Chic even pioneers of disco? Was disco even pioneered?

hapshash jar tempo (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

Chic weren't pioneers of disco. It's often said that the first disco tune is MFSB's "Love Is the Message" from 1973, but IMO it's more like proto-disco. Disco as a proper genre solidified in the mid-70s. Chic's first record came out in 1977.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

yeah Chic was kinda late in the game

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

30 years from now, when Rock Music has finally drawn it's Last Breath, Chic will still be revered as True Geniuses, whereas Black Sabbath will merely be a name in the History Books, about as signifigant as Glenn Miller is for the kids of today.

― Tuomas,

I doubt sabbath will be forgotten no matter how great chic were

unusually tight body for a comedian (Matt P), Friday, 25 February 2011 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

on the evidence of this thread, supposedly liberated life-loving pleasure-embracing Chic fans do a pretty good impression of uptight myopic narcissists with really heavily rockist values (i.e., "This Music Will Be Remembered Long After" zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

If you'd live in a country like Finland you'd see how the genre invented by Black Sabbath has sucked the pleasure and colour out of the surroundings, making everyone dress in black, act all gloomy and pessimistic, and listen to angsty, aggressive, life-denying music. So to fight against metal and for disco is to fight for life! Instead of metal clubs with drunken aggro we good have sweet, beautiful discos in every corner.

Tuomas, Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

hahahahaha YES

unusually tight body for a comedian (Matt P), Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

maybe they listen to it because finland is gloomy and depressing ?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

also its pretty awesome that chic can be more fun AND more significant than black sabbath xp

unusually tight body for a comedian (Matt P), Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

have you ever listened to black sabbath?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe, but metal makes it even more gloomy and depressive. If your surroundings are depressive, wouldn't you want disco to bring some colour to them, instead of metal making them even worse?

Tuomas, Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

(xx-post)

Tuomas, Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

also more punk. and more political. and a big part of the soundtrack to a civil rights movement.

xp. ive listened to and enjoyed the first third and fourth sabbath albums a bunch! im sort of trolling when i say they suck but sort of not because they sort of do suck compared to chic. but a lot of stuff does so its not really their fault.

unusually tight body for a comedian (Matt P), Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

I'm sure Birmingham was extremely depressing and gloomy but it let sabbath be creative and invent an entire genre that continues to evolve to this day.

They're a pop/rock, have been super popular in hear for the last 7 years or so. Not my type of music really, but some of their songs are pretty good:

In the early 00s Jori Sjöroos also had an electro project called Fu-Tourist:

Clearly leaving metal behind was a good move for him.
