What did Elliott Smith mean when he said, "I've got a joke I've been/dying to tell you"?

I've probably thought about this question on and off since XO came out, because a friend of mine went through a breakup and he specifically pointed this line out and I wasn't sure why. It's this one line of his that always sticks with me because I really don't understand it.
I would guess that his feelings for the girl, while utterly serious to him, would be a trifle to her... so like later in "I Didn't Understand" he compares their relationship "to a cloud of smoke/trying to occupy space/what a fucking joke" etc, but I'm not sure...
