This was asked not too long ago, but please, post your five favorite albums so far in 2002 (just new relases, no reissues, archival releases or comps, if you would.) I'm asking b/c I was piecing together some of my favorites so far & it didn't look that hot -- not much I was really excited about. I want to see what I'm missing.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 19 August 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

...

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 19 August 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

My top 5 would barely have made my top 50 last year.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 19 August 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Quite a poor year up till now I'd guess. Lambchop and Wilco would definitely be in the top spots. After that I really don't know. Maybe Sonic Youth though Murray Street is solid but by far not their best.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 19 August 2002 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

in no particular order (but mark already knows this list):

xinlisupreme - tomorrow never comes
sonic youth - murray street
the streets - original pirate material
boards of canada - geogaddi
mri - all that glitters
farben - textstar

and THAT'S IT. (so far.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 August 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

This list subject to change, but:
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Interpol EP
Arrhythmia
Rings Around the World (US release)
Mali Music

lyra (lyra), Monday, 19 August 2002 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I think this year has been a most wonderful year, especially in terms of new jazz music.

Geoffrey Balasoglou, Monday, 19 August 2002 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I've had more luck this year finding things I like than in the previous couple years.

People Under the Stairs - O.S.T.

Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights

St. Thomas - I'm Coming Home

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Radio 4 - Gotham!

Primal Scream - Evil Heat

large mound - raised on rock
lali puna - scary world theory
john parish - how animals move
bjork - vespertine

there's been some great damned stuff released so far this year, with a lot more to come i'd wager!

dudley, Monday, 19 August 2002 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

[Has anybody ever reviewed Lali Puna by saying 'Lali Punani, more like'? If not then MUSIC CRITICISM is on a SLIPPERY SLOPE TO RUIN.

I dunno, the last rekkid I bought was a 7" of Enola Gay.

Restricting a list to albums is rockist, Mr Pitchfork. I nominate MC Pitman. I'll also nominate THE STREETS if that was this year, for my brane is like but a SIEVE and the passing of time means nothing to me.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 19 August 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Poison - Hollyweird
Komeit - Falling Into Place
Hermann and Kline - Our Noise

That's all I can think of.

El-P's Fantastic Damage is up there. The rest? Streets, Nelly, Rapture, Playgroup (DJ Kicks),... (Sonic Youth was a huge disappointment, maybe I should try again.)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 19 August 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Bjork's Vespertine (actually, wasn't that last year?)
the Black Madonna's emergence

Wire, Read & Burn 01

Sleater-Kinney, One Beat

Ladytron, Light & Magic

Kronos Quartet, Nuevo

Destroyer, This Night (okay it's not out yet)

Douglas, Monday, 19 August 2002 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Beachwood Sparks - Make the Robot Cowboys Cry
2. James Yorkston and the Athletes - Moving Up Country
3. Boa Morte - Soon it Will Come Time to face the World Outside
4. Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
5. Reindeer Section - Son of Evil Reindeer

Beachwood Sparks is the only one that takes my breath away from start to finish, and is currently miles in the lead. There have been plenty of good, nice records this year, but stone-cold masterpieces have been rare.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 19 August 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Ils-Soul Trader

FC Kahuna-Machine Says Yes (kinda)

X-Press 2-Muzikizum

The Streets-Original Pirate Material

Fischerspooner-#1

Can I do comps? I mean DJ mixes, it's only fair surely.

Jon Carter-Viva Bugged Out.

Erick Morillo-Subliminal Sessions 3.

Subliminal Records-Subliminal Records the Story So Far (barely scraping in).

I could name about 40 cracking singles though (sounds like an article. hey!)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 19 August 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Improvised Music from Japan
G. Ligeti, The Ligeti Project II

All of those would have made my top 20 last year.

The Streets - Original Pirate Material
V/A: Michael Mayer - Immer
DJ Shadow - The Private Press

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 19 August 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Dominique, what are the Japanese comp and the Ligeti all about? Is this new Ligeti material or new performances of older stuff?

Top 5 live performances:

Sonic Youth

Sunny Murray

Bernard Parmegiani

Voivod

Jean Derome & Joane Hetu

Other good shows: 'Gypt Gore, Goa Gajah, Charles Wizen

I only have 4 albums that were released in 2002 (Derome/Hetu, The Unireverse, Rush, Robert Plant). Unless I count my own release, which would just be gauche.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 19 August 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Lambchop - Is A Woman

Probably several others. Been a pretty good year, albums wise, but nothing to make me really go "wraaaaaaaaaugh" just yet.

90 Day Men - To Everybody
Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes

Hella - Hold Your Horse Is
Interpol - EP
Liars - They Stuck Us In A. . .

Do Make Say Think - & Yet & Yet

Those are off the top of my head and pretty much in order.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 19 August 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Blackalicious: Blazing Arrow (no need to apologize; are we just all about the white indie rockers, anymore?)
Gomez: In Our Gun (let the hate begin, but this is a great record that everyone has decided to shit on or ignore. time will prove me correct. i have no fear)
Tabla Beat Science: Live at Stern Grove (reinventing rock music, three continents at a time)
Trio Mocoto: Samba Rock (26 years later, still hotter than anyone else)
Pepito: Migrante (killer indie mathrock techno duo debut)
Desoto Reds: Preppy Freakout, Vols. 1 & 2 (how is that no one else has heard of these guys yet?)
Kare Joao: Kare Joao (he's Norwegian. he's Brazilian. he's brilliant)
The Walkmen: Everybody Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone (thrilling crazy-people stuff, knifes-edge stuff)
Buffalo Daughter: I (oh yeah, it delivers on the emotional tip)

Can't decide whether Doves or Flaming Lips fill the last spot, either might move up or down.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 August 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Dominique, what are the Japanese comp and the Ligeti all about? Is this new Ligeti material or new performances of older stuff?

Ligeti is new performances of some of his orchestral works ("Atmospheres", "Lontano", "Apparitions", etc). Teldec is continuing the Ligeti series started by Sony. Sony already covered the non-orchestral stuff.

The Japanese set is a 10-CD box of new improvised music, much of it electronic, by people like Otomo Yoshihide, Toshimaru Nakamura, Sachiko M, Ami Yoshida, Seiichi Yamamoto and Haco. It's an inspiration (and unfortunately out of print already).

Michael Bourke, Monday, 19 August 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I know mark sez no comps but I don't care

herbert - secondhand sounds
cee-lo - cee-lo green and his perfect imperfections
farben - textstar
tom waits - alice
sonic youth - murray street
eminem - eminem show (someone asked if anyone still listens to it - I haven't for a while, but that's common for me; before this past week I hadn't listened to alice for a month or so)

my favorite so far is the sonic youth album. I'd really like to get the other tom waits album in there but it's not as pleasing to me yet.

Josh (Josh), Monday, 19 August 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

and I am totally confident that I'll put the new sleater-kinney on there too once I hear it.

hey brock, was that jay-z remix released as a single or something? I would love any excuse to put it on a list this year too.

5 demarnia lloyd 'set upon a curve'

keith, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The date on my copy of I Get Wet is 2001. Otherwise I would have definitely listed it. I'm very curious about Cee-Lo (didn't even realize he had a solo album out this year) and interested in Eminem and a bunch of stuff on hstencil's list. I don't know if Bardo Pond and Voivod have albums out this year but I'll look into it.

np: Robert Plant - Dreamland

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty sure that Bardo Pond do indeed have a new album.

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that that proves that I Get Wet wasn't released this year but just that's why I didn't list it.

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Obligatory 5:

In no real order:

Street - Original Pirate Material,
Fischerspooner - #1,
Herbert - Second Hand Sounds,
International Deejay Gigilo's comp,
So Solid Crew - Fuck it

Robin Goad, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the new Dalek album kicks all kind of ass on that El-P rekkid (which I kind of like too). I think the Acid Mother's Temple released stuff I've liked a lot this year (god knows what the official release dates are on these damn albums haha). Geogaddi is pretty nice (although I ain't actually bought it yet) as is Arrhythmia. Any of those Girls on Top singles are excellent. Other than that everything else I've liked is a reissue (or I just plain can't remember.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Jean Derome & Joane Hetu, BTW, are two middle-aged French Canadian artists who just love making noise. I was fortunate to accidentally stumble into a free show they did this summer. They'll often start with really dorky Quebecois folk songs or little chants they made up and just go off on improvised tangents with all kinds of instruments, sometimes homemade ones. They like the jaw's harp. They'll make crazy vocal sounds as well. La vie, c'est simple (on Ambiances Magnetiques) is a very good release.

Lone Pigeon- Concubine Rice

If you havent at least given it a listen, thats a shame.. more musical pastiches that give you a direct line into the workings of his mind...I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Woohoo! Someone else recognizes the genius of Hella. Better than Don Cab? At times, sir, at times.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My list hasn't changed that much since the last time we did this, but there are a lot of records that people on this thread have mentioned that I still haven't heard and would like to. I'm hoping that some of these start showing up on the Net or I may be forced to purchase them unheard. There are still too many gaps in my collection for me to devote too much of my music-buying $$$'s to current releases. Anyway, as of the current time, my top 4 are: Rovo "Tonic 2001", Sonic Youth "Murray Street", Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", and Blackalicious "Blazing Arrow".

Low's Trust will probably end up making my top ten. There are some great tracks on there... but it's way too long, much like the Bright Eyes disc. A very pleasent surprise is the Doug Martsch solo record. Much better than the last BTS disc, that's for sure.

Shiina Ringo - Utaite Myouri
Yuka Honda - Memories are my only Witness
Farben - Texstar
Notwist - Neon Golden
and maybe RJD2 or Mr. Lif as an uncommitted 5th. If mixes count, then Ellen Allien's Weiss.

Still anticipating to hear Amon Tobin, Piano Magic, Xinlisupreme, Kompakt Total 4, Horsepower Productions, and Massive Attack if they are actually coming out.

Honda, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

the two that stick out for me are TTC - Ceci Ne Pas un Disque and at a MF Doom-size pinch MF Grimm's Ibliys: A ghetto opera. So much for openmindedness, I could've predicted that last year. I'll think about it some more.

i did finally get a copy of cyrille/graves "dialogue of the drums" tho.

hstencil, i like yr list. Props!

Stuff released this year:

1) El-P, Fantastic Damage

2) Clinic, Walking With Thee

3) Super Furry Animals, Rings Around The World (falls into that dangeous "that was released LAST YEAR you Yankee simp" area, tho)

4) Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

5) DJ Shadow, The Private Press; RJD2, Dead Ringer(tie) (not to make that tired equation like everyone else myself included has done constantly)

Stuff released a while ago:

1) Radio Birdman, Radios Appear (last year's SubPop comp that I played to death has most of the material on it but only this year did I get to hear the rest of the tracks.)

2) The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds (yes, it took me this long to buy it)

3) Daft Punk, Discovery

4) The Ramones (the reissue with tons of extras and stuff)

5) Marvin Gaye, What's Going On (see #2)

Singles:

1) Blackalicious, "Make You Feel That Way"

2) Royksopp, "Poor Leno"

3) Wildbunch, "Danger! High Voltage"

4) Freelance Hairdresser, "Marshall's Been Snookered" (stole this choice from Matos)

5) Beck, "Paper Tiger" (I count this because it's been released over the internet)

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that the "stuff released a while ago" actually was reissued this year or anything. It's just stuff I discovered this year. Which should be a whole new thread, right?
And hey, does this mean I don't have to use HTML just to do a new line anymore?

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

And hey, does this mean I don't have to use HTML just to do a new line anymore?.

Yes, the geniuses who put this vers. of ILM together thought of everything.

Paging through the list I'm surprised most by many of the most frequently cited records I've heard...leading me to believe that I'm not missing all the great stuff, maybe.

This was my quick five, w/ out thinking about it too much:

1. Farben – Texstar
2. The Books – Thought for Food
3. Boards of Canada – Geogaddi
4. Tim Hecker – Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again
5. Req – Sketchbook
