The Modern Lovers (album)

Opting for the 2003 version because it contains "I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms", one of my personal faves (albeit probably not the one I'd vote for), though problematic because it doesn't conclude with "Government Center" (kind of the platonic ideal of an album closer).

Does anyone know if that alternate version of "Roadrunner" is shanghaied from The Original Modern Lovers album that Bomp! put out? That version is sublime.

oooh this is tough. so many amazing songs.

the pussy re-upholstery gang (some dude), Friday, 26 November 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

I don't even own a copy of it and I know most of the songs by heart. is the 2003 version you speak of the best one to get?

the pussy re-upholstery gang (some dude), Friday, 26 November 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

i should get that 2003 version. i've just got the rhino/beserkeley cd. no idea what to vote for. even the bonus trax are stellar.

tylerw, Friday, 26 November 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'd say yes, as it doesn't neglect any of the songs added onto earlier releases. Plus, if that alt. take on Roadrunner is either of the versions included on that odd and brilliant Original Modern Lovers thing Bomp put out, then YES.

R Baez, Friday, 26 November 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

And, of course, "I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms" an amazing angsty stomper. Let's hope there's a youtube clip floating around.

R Baez, Friday, 26 November 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

btw, excellent modern lovers live set here http://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/828142175/old-world-finally-getting-around-to-posting-this
amateurist hooked me up w/ this one. so good.

tylerw, Friday, 26 November 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

I have heard nearly all the songs here on a compilation. Great tracks, but I'm gonna go for "I'm Straight" if only for the self-deprecating runny-nosed delivery.

What are you doing here? (dog latin), Friday, 26 November 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

voted Hospital without a second thought

gospodin simmel, Friday, 26 November 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

When I first heard this album I would have said Hospital without second thought, but today I have to go with I'm Straight.

Deluxe Merseybeat Wig (Jack Battery-Pack), Friday, 26 November 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Anything other than "Roadrunner" (the leadoff version) winning this just wouldn't make any sense to me. It's one of the most amazing songs ever.

clemenza, Friday, 26 November 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Roadrunner will win this by about 20 votes.

Toss up between Government Center, Pablo Picasso, and I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms for me.

R Baez, Friday, 26 November 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

damn it this is tough. but despite all my contrarian urges 'roadrunner' won't stop shouting out at me.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Friday, 26 November 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

voted I'm Straight without a second thought. This wasn't on the original LP was it? At least, I was gutted to find it wasn't on the copy I eventually found and bought.

kraudive, Friday, 26 November 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

I've only ever owned the original vinyl, so as much as I love Government Center it's hard for me to think of it being part of this record. No, I'm Straight isn't on the original either. I've never heard I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms; guess i need to! So many great songs I can't choose right now (but I reallyreallyreally love Girlfriend.)

"She Cracked"

Bomp LP version of "She Cracked" is >>>>>>> the regular LP version.

voted for

"put down your cigarettes
and drop out of high school"

but yeah, for years after first getting to know this I would have chosen "Hospital" or "I'm Straight".

i love this album. seems like "dignified and old" isn't gonna get a vote so i'll give it one

overtheseas aeroplanes I have flown (k3vin k.), Friday, 26 November 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

D&O is my vote, too. Compositionally kinda boring, but it's just touching, and fun, I luv it.

If I didn't vote for Roadrunner I'd be full of shit. Not feeling pooped to the gills today, so Roadrunner.

This really. I could vote for I Wanna Sleep In Yr Arms, but that's not on my copy, it's from Original Modern Lovers. I could vote for She Cracked, cos it's awesome.

But I'd be fronting. It's 1-2-3-4-5-6

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 26 November 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

She Cracked. Organ solo...

dlp9001, Saturday, 27 November 2010 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, gotta agree about "She Cracked" as much as I could've easily voted for 6 other tracks.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 27 November 2010 03:20 (fifteen years ago)

i love this album. seems like "dignified and old" isn't gonna get a vote so i'll give it one

― overtheseas aeroplanes I have flown (k3vin k.), Friday, November 26, 2010 10:47 PM

Dignified & Old is getting my vote, it's such an instant song. It's one of those songs that's so short and addictive as soon as it's finished I want to hear it again straight away. Hospital, Roadrunner and She Cracked would be also be up there.

It took me a long time to love this album but once it clicked I was just addicted. This would easily be in my top ten albums of all time.

"Roadrunner" is p. obvious but I wanna put a word in for "Pablo Picasso" 'cause it's deadpan hilarious, plus it's nice to hear a fuzzbox once in a while. (Me, I'd bet some people called Pablo Picasso an asshole)

If it cannot be notated, then there is no nute. (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 31 December 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 17 June 2012 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

Never grown tired of this one. Remember one time way back going in Bleecker Bob's, I think, to buy another Modern Lovers album and having to listen to the guy behind the counter say "not a patch on the first album, though, is it." In the case of a lesser album such record store 'tudeh might have turned me against it but here I never wavered.

Astral Plane 2
wtf too low

billstevejim, Sunday, 17 June 2012 08:00 (thirteen years ago)

Sanctuary have a 2cd compi of all the Beserkeley stuff at midprice (I think) which is great cos it contains all the singles and stuff.
I'm not sure if the Kim Fowley production stuff is available at the moment.

tylerw, Sunday, 17 June 2012 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

That Dean Wareham piece is very good, but I feel like after his initial denial at Bleecker Bob's he should have looked a tiny bit harder in the immediate area. At, say, Venus or Second Coming Records http://vassifer.blogs.com/photos/my_vanishing_downtown/secondcoming.html

bentelec, Sunday, 17 June 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

Huh, after I repped for "Girlfriend" I must not have voted for it. I might have opted for virtually any other track, though. Dean Wareham is correct: this album has no filler, and it is unstoppable. (And I wish I still had my t-shirt like the baby is wearing.)

Maybe this has been commented on before, but really noticing how much Ernie Brooks' bass sounds like Dave Alexander of The Stooges. Of course this is especially obvious on the live track "The Mixer," which cops it groove from The Stooges' "Loose."
