I just picked up an LP from late last year he did as [that null-set symbol] called Heijastuva that's straight-up fantastic... Anybody else heard it?

it just came out i think and yeah it's p great. kinda dark ambient-ish i guess, the first track working in a similar style to his amazing popol vuh remix from a couple of years back -- slow-reveal guitar loop gradually distorting into eternity

so i was listening to the one w/the 'set the controls for the heart of the sun' cover yesterday. not too familiar w/his catalog outside of pan sonic but i really liked the minimal electro track 'u-bahn'. anyone have any suggestions about where to go next?

Been listening to his latest album Kilo today. It is unrelenting clunk of heavy manufacturing industry type stuff, even the most ambient moment Sub-atlantic is very dark. First few tracks sound like his Kesto period. Excellent album.

listening to the new one. keep having to crank it up more. "docks" is excellent.

it's got very nice sound design

was there a point in his career where his 'playing' took a lyrical turn

the Moog Recordings Library release is pretty ephemeral and two-thirds environmental sound experiments. not an essential, but could be worth picking up for completists or on sale

the second vainio/vigroux release is surprisingly melodic, with some Ø project-style bleepiness and less of vigroux’s vibe

the new one was sounding good this morning but i was trying to work and needed something less aggressively bleak so put on endless kevin drumm drones instead

well, this is exciting news -

Mika Vainio started making a new Ø album in 2014. He almost finalized the record before his too early passing in 2017. The album Sysivalo is the 9th out of 8 full scale albums, released under the Ø alias by Vainio. Ø was his longest running project from 1993 to 2017. Sysivalo was recorded during 2014-2017 and is 60 min long album with 20 tracks, produced by Vainio. He described the record as a distinct Ø album that was going to include several shorter tracks, etudes. The title, Sysivalo, is invented by Vainio by combining the Finnish words sysi (dark or sinister) and valo (light).

Like life itself, the album carries a quiet darkness - honest and full of hidden light. The many of the tracks are beatless subtle soundtracks of eclipsed emotions. Like an incapacitated creature waiting for something to happen.

The closing track Loputon (Endless) is maybe the most beautiful tracks Vainio has ever written, Vainio's last word.
