"I don't feel guilty about liking anything. I just love good music. And while some people probably find Abba nauseating, I love the songwriting."

"There was a real lease of life because it meant I had something to write for again and I felt passionate about it and excited by it."

really hope the interviewer actually said "Hang on a minute. Rewind a bit" to him when he said he'd bought an Abba CD

Massive hype bandwagon set for this year but I'm not immediately predisposed to hate them, in fact I'm really looking forward to the album. They are incredibly derivative but absolutely terrific at writing 2min Ramones-style punk pop songs - Wreckin' Bar and If You Wanna are both fantastic.

The BBC's entertainment writing is so terrible. "Wow, you play guitars and yet you like Abba? Mind=blown!"

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:09 (fifteen years ago)

Even that famed Poptimist Bobby Gillespie came out as liking Abba about 10 years ago.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

i don't really like abba

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

i like them better than the vaccines though. why does this band exist. i want to flick them away like bugs that land on my desk.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

Seen them a couple of times. The Vaccines. Not Abba. The first time at the Flowerpot I was very meh - had heard the hype but not the songs, and there seemed to be a disconnect between the two. The second time I enjoyed much more. Four or five bangers. Be interesting to see if they can keep up the standard for a whole album. No reinvention of the wheel, but they're sharp and zesty, which doesn't seem to have been the way for Brit guitar bands for a while. Apart from the bassist, they look good onstage too, which counts for a lot with this kind of band.

Alan Partridge Project (ithappens), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

I don't really like Abba either but in 2010 it shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone to see a reasonably poppy guitar band namechecking them in interview, unless the interviewer is an idiot.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:39 (fifteen years ago)

2011 I mean. Shit, haven't got used to writing that yet.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 12:40 (fifteen years ago)

sod it. will use both threads.

sick to the fucking beginning of my root canal nerves of hearing about/hearing them. already.

they're sort of average, which means they will probably be waist deep in cocaine and hookers by March as it's the UK, autobiography detailing just how interesting this is as it has never happened before to be out by 2013, 2 for 1 kindle book with the one by the boring guy nobody gave a fuck about at the time or later from The Libertines.

Album leaked. It's absolutely great (except for "Post Break Up Sex" which remains a total piece of shit song).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 March 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

FUCKING amazing, just fantastic. my favourite british rock album since The Horrors' Primary Colours.
so glad it's good as there's been a weird kind of backlash-before-the-hype's-even-started from sneery would be hipster types. fuck em.

piscesx, Monday, 14 March 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

I missed the hype build-up. I just found out about them last December or so kind of by accident when I looking to see what Jay Jay Pistolet was up to. Turns out he went back to his real name and started a band called The Vaccines.

He used to do a pretty good M.Ward impression:

actually, i'm really looking forward to picking it up from fopp when they drop it to a fiver.
and co-sign the statement about the use of the old columbia logo on the sleeve, its a nice touch, and suits the cover art nicely.

mark e, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

if you wanna...fantastic

Get me two meatball sandwiches Utah! TWO! (thebingo), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

They've certainly got the tunes (Post Break-Up Sex excepted) and even though they're shamelessly derivative it's a lot of fun.

Problem that won't go away is the singer - he has a sort of Danny McNamara anti-charismatic bellow that means he should really not try to hold notes for very long. Or be upfront-and-centre in the mix.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

Their live set is now expanded from 30 minutes to 32 mins 30 secs by the addition of a cover of Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White.

"If You Wanna" is pretty good. The rest of this album is decent, but this is the standout for me.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 17:57 (twelve years ago)

is it me, or is there a big Morrissey thing going on with the vocals?

warmed up considerably to the first album. at least 5-6 very good songs on this.

Poliopolice, Monday, 17 February 2014 22:00 (eleven years ago)

I think they're an underrated group. I think Justin's a very sharp songwriter, who knows exactly where he and they are going. Heard from several people connected with the group that he insisted on leaving several songs off the second album that everyone else thought were the best, because he insisted they weren't Vaccines songs. And I'm inclined to credit that to a clear eyed view of his audience than blind stupidity.

Also … he is incredibly nice. He recently went to my friend's house – whom he'd never met – to record some guitar parts for an album, because I emailed and asked him to. I'm not his best mate or anything - have met him three times. That struck me as an act of staggering decency.

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 15:17 (eleven years ago)

it's not gonna win any awards for originality, but it's got a lot of what I look for in music: a combination of fun and melancholia set to jangles and memorable tunes.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 22:06 (eleven years ago)

pretty music obsessed with this album now.
